Guest guest
I am almost 4 yrs MGB post-op and have had 1 run-in with Anemia back in 2005 that required an iron infusion. This past May 7, I received a second iron infusion because my Ferritin was 14. As of yesterday, it was 332 (higher than normal). So at this point I think it's safe to rule out Anemia. Supposedly, my B-levels are normal but I don't have the actual lab values. I have been suffering from extreme fatigue to the point of napping every day and practically falling asleep behind the wheel. I have been getting thinning hair again and do have deep ridges in my toe and fingernails, which I've been told is a vitamin deficiency but I am not sure which one! Has anyone else experienced such a thing, and if so, what was your outcome, please? Thanks and Best regards, Patty A 5'3 " , 253/144/??? 8/25/03, MGB, Stsvl, Drs. Guest guest
Patty, I am no expert on this at all. However, I recently had my labs done and my zinc is low. I've also been noticing strange ridges on my fingernails. I wonder if the two are connected? I'll be interested in what you find out. If your Ferritin is high, could that make you tired? in NC NCGorgeous1963@... wrote: I am almost 4 yrs MGB post-op and have had 1 run-in with Anemia back in 2005 that required an iron infusion. Guest guest
From my nutritional healing book ~ " Ridges can appear in the nails either vertically or horizontally. Vertical ridges indicate poor general health, poor nutrient absorption, and/or ion deficiency; they my also indicate a kidney disorder. Horizontal ridges can occur as a result of severe stress, either psychological or physical, such as from infection and/or disease. Ridges running up and down the nails also indicate a tendency to develop arthritis. " Also, please remember that we are not walking, talking MGBs. Rather we are normal people who have had a MGB. Your fatigue could be entirely unrelated to the mgb. Have you had your thyroid checked? How about mono? Carol in Seattle --- " A. Guest guest
in the far distant past, i used to teach manicuring. i can't remember all the different nail disorders and what causes each one, but what i taught my students, generally, is that what is good for the body as a whole is good for your nails. 3 multis a day should take care of most of your vitamins, but as we all know from the recent posts, should isn't always reality (iron, for example). what i would suggest is a hair and nail supplement, either added to your currnet regimine or added in. some of the hair and nail formulas are full multi vitamins, in which case i would replace some of your current multis with them. other hair and nail formulas contain specific nutrients only, and assuming none of these are ones that build up dangerously in your body, i'd say add one in along with the rest. as far as peeling or other specific nail problems go, go to a sally beauty sdupply and get topic treatments for these. get a base coat (or clear polish, if you prefer) that is formulated specifically for peeling nails, this will seal the ends and you should see improvement. these treatments really do work, but only if you use them regularly. monica Re: Extreme fatigue I don't have ridges, but my nails do peel at the tips. Does anyone have this problem? I'm trying to pinpoint which vitamin could be causing this. I started taking biotin. Unfortunately, the nails take so long to grow that you won't know if it's working for quite some time. > > I am almost 4 yrs MGB post-op and have had > > 1 run-in with Anemia back in 2005 > > that required an iron infusion. Guest guest
I was dealing with increasing fatigue and asked to have my PTH (parathyroid - different from thyroid) tested thanks to someone on this list who suggested it. I found http://parathyroid.com/ thanks to a second person who posts here and fatigue is one of the symptoms of a problem. Mine came out very high. I'm still waiting to get into an endocrinologist. Guest guest
I hadn't realized that low Vitamin D could potentially be a concern. My PCP just had more blood tests run, including Vitamin D, but we have not yet received the results. FYI I currently take Ritalin, and have previously been prescribed provigil, nuvigil, OTC caffeine, and other such medications and had to stop due to various side effects. Guest guest
Thanks. Yes, My PC and I have been working on getting my vitamin D level to an acceptable level for months. 50,000 IU a week did little, se we went up to 100,000 IU. That took me up to 80. She then had me go to 5,000IU a day, not wanting to have things go too high. The D crashed to well below normal. That was the same month that I had the PTH tested, so now I'm on 10,000 IU a day. The D has gone up some and the PTH has gone down some, but several of my other labs were out of wack - I have been completely stable for 5 years, so the question now is are these things related or individual issues. I'm still waiting to get into the endocrinologist - 2 months just to see her nurse! Very frustrating! Always something. Pat On 7/16/11, K. Guest guest
Jim - I learned about the vitamin D connection a while ago and have been working with my pc ever since to get mine balanced. Beth Fillman suggested that I get my parathyroid checked (PTH blood test) and mine came out very high. If the parathyroid itself is the problem it can also be a cause for fatigue. I see the endocrinologist tomorrow. Best of luck in finding the answer in your case. The person who finds an answer that helps all CLL patients is going to be very rich!
