April 12/13, 2004

Today my processor worked the same as last week. Have no idea why it did

that over the weekend. Told my co-worker maybe it missed the office? Went

to the Loading Dock (bar) this evening and it worked beautifully. Could

even tell when some of the people in the band were talking and could hear

the flute tonight. Last week I couldn't make out the flute. I tried it on

the whisper setting but it got too soft for me. Kept it on P2 and it was

just fine. Oh yeah, found out what the two programs are. P1 is

sensitivity map and P2 is volume map. P1 is the one that has gotten too

soft for me, but both were too soft over the weekend.... just weird :(

On Friday I was downstairs doing some staining and watching tv when I

noticed that I wasn't hearing the tv. That made me realize that the sound

had cut out. After about 30 seconds it came back on.

On Saturday I was noticing that no matter which program I had the processor

on, P1 or P2 and the volume all the way up, everyone sounded like a faint

whisper. I noticed it greatly in the morning when I went to the gym, as I

was having a hard time understanding some of the people talking to me when

they were right in front of me. When I went with a couple of friends and

our dogs for a walk later on, I noticed that vehicle traffic, which I am

finding noisy, were more muted in sound. I could hardly hear the dogs

barking, even standing next to them. It was like this all day on Saturday.

On Sunday it was fine after I put on the processor but I noticed about an

hour and half later that the tv volume was really down low and that the

sound that newspaper made didn't bother me anymore. When I went for a walk

again with the two friends and dogs, it was worse. I could barely hear

their voices at all. Again the vehicle traffic was very muted. It was

like this all morning and into the afternoon. Around mid afternoon I was

on the computer when I started noticing that I could hear the keyboard

better (meaning loud) and when I talked to my husband who was watching tv

it sounded more like the past week. But later in the evening I noticed

another drop in the sound of voices, but environment noises were not quite

as muted.

Now today, I didn't notice any softness at all except when I had it on

P1. P2 was sharper in sound and I kept it about a 4/5 when using it. I

did keep it on P1 most of the day as I found that the office sounds were

better and I could tune them out better. Other then changing the batteries

around 1pm (last change was on Friday evening) I had no problems. This

evening I went to the Loading Dock to listen to friends that play in the

band (they play Celtic music) and could hear the flute this evening. I

couldn't hear the flute last week. The music sounded better then it did

last week and when wearing my aids. I could pick out the more of the

instruments and even the drums sounded better. I tried the whisper setting

but it got to soft where I couldn't hear anyone talking and the music was

hard to hear. So I kept it on P2 all evening. I could hear some of the

members of the band talking, even if I couldn't understand what they were

saying. Right now I have it on P2 with the volume set between 4/5 and it

is comfortable. Also I can hear the tv in the other room, even if I don't

know what is going on. If I have it on P1 I would have it all the way to

#7 on the volume.

I am also at lost why I was having so much trouble over the weekend. I

checked to make sure the cord was fine and it was. The batteries were new

so that shouldn't be a problem. I have been putting it in the dry and

store every night.

Tuesday was much like Monday, no problems. Did take a walk, but the wind

was cold so I didn’t pay much attention to things around me to hear

anything new. A co-worker came in with her baby today (2 months) and I

could hear him cry a little bit.

New sounds… oh yeah.

Did you know that a highlighter makes a sound when you move it across paper?

That paper makes a sound just by moving it flat across the desk?

Leaves sound so different with the CI then with the HA.

On another note, the audi thinks I might have had some bad batteries. So

next time I am to replace the batteries and also maybe the head coil and

see if that helps. If not she will send me some different batteries and

see if that makes a difference. Trying other things between now and the 29th.

Cove is excellent. I know of parents who are paying tuition to send kids

there. I know parents who have gone to Due Process to get Cove.

I think you should go for it -- but visit there first.

I live in Northbrook and have known many families who have been quite happy with

Cove. The " typical " student there tends to have nonverbal learning disabilities

or other kinds of LD's, ADD, ADHD, or high functioning autism. They do not

appear to provide services for students with more challenging behaviors...

They have a good reputation.

After following Judy's advise I scheduled a meeting with SEDOL's Parent

Advocate Joy Bux. I came prepared with the last three IEPs, the hospital

discharge summary (from Childrens and I was very happy with the depth of it

and the

understanding that the staff had and was able to articulate). We both felt

that his placement in his home district wasn't the best. She recommended

Sally Potter and Gages Lake campus and to call the Special Ed coordinator for

our

district to set up times to see the schools. WELL I am so happy to report

that the school had already been looking for placement for him and had ruled

out these first two schools based on his emotional and cognitive development,

and his not being able to handle the population of these schools. They have

been looking at private placement at a school called The Cove or Cove in

Northbrook. Anyone have any thoughts or incites on this school? We had a good

conversation and she is pursuing this. She voiced concerns that his

eligibility for Spec Ed was Autism PDD and that in order to get into some of

the

schools it might need to be changed. I am just happy that previous teachers

and

staff have spoken on his behalf and that they are taking into consideration

his needs.
