glad the nurses at least called on your well-being, Josie!

I have left docs that treated me other than what I wanted also, but these were not blamed on money but on my refusal to do things their way (while making me more ill), and my shrink backed me on these decisions.

I do remember having more than one doc look at my list of Sx and Dx, plus the meds I had tried and/or was on, and have a look of terror on their face (grin)

Some docs can really look like either they didn't complete medical school, or the best results for their patients was not top on their list of goals..... sad....

anyway all we can do is the best we can do -- and to try to find ways that are most likely to help us be our best, I guess

I have severe migraines. If I can't get one of my

friends to drive me, I have to cancel. My pain MD saw

me a few weeks back when I had a migraine. He knew he

wouldn't get paid for another procedure because he'd

never seen me in so much pain. I would have paid for a

missed appointment. I am on Medicare.

Willow, I am so very very sorry re your having that kind of pain! I can't imagine. And that that would happen when your doc had never seen you in such a condition does NOT sound appropriate to me!!!

I sure hope someone has a great idea for how to get the care you need.

I have to assume the wife is a nutjob and the husband has no idea

what she said to you.

When i had a pinched nerve and needed to find a chiro aorund here I

called the biggest one and they said the earliest they could see me

was in a week. Being from Chgo I couldnt understand how someone

could call for an emergency adjustment and be told " not til next

week " . And then, she added, it was because he was such an excellant

Chiro. That people just waited to see him. ((See how lucky I was for

being expected to wait only a week for an emergency adjustment?))

wha huh?

When I asked to talk to the owner, she said she was part owner. And

so I told her exactly what I thought about her attitude and the fact

that as someone in the " healing arts " she has a certain

responsibility to people who were in acute pain. That the least,

the LEAST, she could do was suggest another chiro in the area and be

helpful as well as polite.

I must have totally shamed her. Because she called back with

another name and their number. And then called back again with an

open appointment that was for the next day.

I think people just dont think about what they are saying sometimes

and need a reminder of why they are IN the business they have

chosen. Id call the Dr and see if this was his feeling or if it was

his wife's?

What an awful thing she said to you! I would have been shocked too.

And you have every right to be. Her behavior was far from

professional. Hard to know if she was jealous (you mentioned

friendship), or if she was nagging her husband that morning for more

money and he refused, or what was going on in her head. But that is

not your problem. Its hers, and his. A large part of medical

care-taking IMHO is a good bedside manner, not the almighty dollar.

Anyhow, take care of yourself. Spirits up. :)

Peace,

Hmmmmmm, I've had a thought. At the end of the day, could it, could it be

all down to shear ignorance?

I don't mean bad mannered ignorance, I mean ignorance through lack of

exposure. Meaning, how many times does the average member of society come

across either a blind person, or a dwarf?

Therefore, surely it is reasonably understandable that they have neither

experience, or knowledge on how to deal with the situation. Which means,

that you , and I, have to accept the mantle of responsibility of

being ambassadors of our 'unique' situation.

To digress slightly, Lin and I were touring a part of England we have never

ever been to before. We stopped at a beautiful public house in the middle

of no-where. During the conversation with a member of staff, we learned

that, surprisingly, we were the first and only dwarfs she had ever come

across! She had watched the Roloffs on television. Quote, " You know, that

family where most of them are, are, well, as small as you are. " We then

spent some time, answering her questions. They became more frequent and

personal, as the dawning of realisation came across her that " hey, these

are REAL (in caps) people, and I can talk to them. "

So, surely it is a similar case for yourself. People know about blind

people, they see them in the street, but hey, just how many of them have

actually got experience of them in their own lives? What is common sense to

you (and I), can and often is, a complete mystery to others.

When the voice asked your sighted friend if she wanted a braille menu, would

it not have been better if you had just piped up with " Yes please, I'd love

one, and so would my boyfriend. " I mean, yer, the recipients jaw would have

probably dropped and you could have had a quiet giggle deep down, but the

ice was then broken. Equally, your friend should not have accepted the

menu, but intimated that the waiter should give it to you. Surely this is

not the first time that you have experienced similar situations and have had

to deal with them? Granted they do get the blood pressure up, but that's

life.

It's a bit like the very, very old joke about someone in a wheelchair.

" Does he/she take sugar in his/her tea? " addressed to the none wheelchair

user with them. Answer, " I don't know, ask her/him. "

Oh, just remembered something. I'd gone to a demonstration of " Jaws " . Half

way through the demo, I realised the demonstrator wouldn't know she was

dealing with a dwarf. So I just said, " Oh by the way, you are speaking to a

dwarf. "

" I know, " she replied.

" How? " said I.

" Because your voice is coming from (and she points) down there! "

Fred was thus put in his place!

I suppose we all have to put up with what seems like tactless actions, but

which are usually born out of nothing more than the ignorance from lack of

experience. For small statured people, one of THE (in caps) worst is being

tapped on the head! My brother-in-law only ever did it to me once! He

still remembers the pain from my volley of terrible expletives!

Nah Sabrena, you have to remember that you frequently are, in effect, the

ambassador of blindness, just as we are the ambassadors of small stature.

Just don't expect me to be so, on a bad day. Giggle!

Best wishes

Fred

Re: Has this ever happened to you?

Ah, Sabrena, I have a huge grin on my face! Yes, yes, yes, it also happens

to us little folks, time after time after time.
