Guest guest
Hey kendra, how was the process in California to get pca's? What kind of limits do you have. Is there a limit to how many hours they can work? How much do they get paid? I've just always been curious about California
Guest guest
First off, I am shocked to think your PCA's (in Canada they're called PSW) husband could call you. The only phone contact we're supposed to have is with the scheduling office from where they are employed. The PCA/PSW has the clients number incase they need to let them know they're running behind or an emergency popped up. I have been asked to " cover " only if my PSW is late or is too busy doing something for me to take a call from the office, so I take a message and tell the office she'll call back. That's the extent of which I will cover and nothing else personally related. I am a " go by the book " person and will graciously accept any additional PSW services not on my " to-do " list, as long as they were the one who offered. I will even ask, but will be okay if they say no. I see my PSW as my " muscle " and if I need their help in doing stuff that a friend or family would do, I ask. I don't expect anything more. If I ever find myself in a position like yours, I'd be calling the office once she's done and she'd be " toast/fired. " I am glad it hasn't happened to me. Guest guest
It sounds like you are using agencies to find your PCA's. In many states in the US, we hire and train our own PCA's. We can pick and choose who we want and for how long we want them. I love it! I've found it's the best way to go because not only are you getting to choose PCA's and get those people's personalities who work well with yours, but they respect you more and see you as the authority. They get a pay check from you. They set the schedule with you. Cutting out the middle man fixed a lot of problems. I'm in the process of hiring new PCA's right now - I'm so excited! -Kendra > First off, I am shocked to think your PCA's (in Canada they're called PSW) > husband could call you. Guest guest
I appreciate the replies here but the facts are that the pcas husband never called me. He dropped by the parking lot as the pca was leaving work (as I wrote earlier). Also there's no agency to call and report anything, I'm the employer. When I said 'cover' I meant 'lie for' not work for. As well as the fact that the pca wanted her paycheck to reflect time that she told her husband she was working here (because he was catching her in a descrepency of time away not balancing out with a matching paycheck) -By the way I haven't granted any of these requests-. I figured if any one here at sma friends have had this happen to them they could relate to me how they handled it. If people here haven't experienced this maybe sharing my expereince could help someone else down the road. > > Have any of you out there who have PCAs ever have a PCA ask you to > > cover for them? > > > > I recently had a PCA tell me (after the fact)that she told her > > husband that she was working for me while she was 'out with > > friends'. Guest guest
I'm still waiting on much of the info. I'm just asking around for PCA's word of mouth right now and will begin interviewing soon. I still have to go through having that IHSS person come out and fill out the forms for exactly how many hours I need and what care I qualify for. I've been told there are limits to hours, but I'm requesting 30-35 hours/week. I was told that the going rate is $9.50/hr but could change depending on type of care I get qualified for. Alana and might be able to answer your questions more completely. -Kendra > Hey kendra, how was the process in California to get pca's? What kind of > limits do you have. Guest guest
amy, i've had similar things happen over the years. i just said i wasn't willing to lie. they didn't persist. i'm surprised that your PA keeps asking. have you told her such requests could put her job in jeopardy? is the husband a scary element? your PA seems to be playing with fire. could it get dangerous for you? i had one PA with a volatile and jealous boyfriend about 15 years ago, even though i don't think he had a reason to be jealous. i was also a little nervous she'd steal and not show up to work under duress. i hired a new PA and changed the access code on the door, and had the new PA there (in the next room for safety but semi-privacy) when the old came for her shift. i paid her, explained my fears, and gave her the number of 3 shelters. we both cried. is it hard to hire a new PA? alana
Guest guest
In Ontario, our PCA/PSW services are being restructured, so I am not sure what we'll see next. For those like myself, we get the majority of our support services; though minimal, from government agencies like Red Cross or other local community programmes. The government does have a self-direct care programme where they provide funds to the client and it is up to them who to hire and they have to do all the necessary " paperwork " , but it has a waiting list a mile long, so getting accepted doesn't happen very quickly. Because I moved my service provider territory changed and I had to switch agencies while I wait for my app to get approval for self-direct care. I am sorry if I misled you in my story about my " cover " up it was not meant to be a comparison to what happened to you. I am glad to know you made the right decision and did not comply to her insane request. Guest guest
in california IHSS offers a maximum of 283 hours per month of personal assistance services. it caps out much lower if only domestic services are needed though i don't know the figure off the top of my head. each county sets their own rate, and some offer benefits. alameda pays $9.50/hr. and offers health, vision, dental and chiropractic to PAs who work more than 35 hrs a month and pay union dues and a small premium. Guest guest
After an IHSS worker comes out to evaluate your situation and see how many hours you need, you can then have your personal care worker fill out papers to be your provider. You send in a timesheet twice a month as their are two pay periods, 1-15th and 16-end of the month. In about 8 days after the timesheet is sent, the payment check for the provider comes and it has the next timesheet included. Is that what you wanted to know? Guest guest
OUCH Willow!!! That's awful! especially when announced by the wife not the doc!!! and you probably couldn't easily afford to pay out of pocket for missed appointments.... (which would be the most obvious 'fix') Might he be willing to keep you if you were always the last patient of the day -- because he could just leave early the days you had to cancel? though that might mean LOTS of waiting, which does allow for a lot of reading getting done.... or might he be willing to accept a 'missed appointment fee' $20 or so? or is there some service he would like that you could give to 'pay' for any missed appointments? I do have several doctors who charge 'missed appointment fee' if you don't tell either 24 or 48 hours in advance, though some don't require that of me, as I miss very few. And I do have one that ALWAYS charges full fee for missed appointments without I think 24 hour warning -- and it seems to me that somewhere I saw that the timing was 48 hours. however you can figure to do it, I hope you figure a way to appeal her decision. even if appearing in person and awaiting his talking/negotiating with you!!!!!!!!!! plus how about seeing if you can get a 'medical taxi' set up by your town or some organization to cover such occurrences!? Probably you are not the only one! Jean Has this ever happened to you? Hi Everyone ; )I had an appointment on Monday to see my family MD -just a regular meeting, nothing special. If it was a case of your canceling on the day of the appointment on a regular basis, then they lose money not having someone else booked in your place. My MD wouldn't have this problem since they overbook anyway... C. Has this ever happened to you? Hi Everyone ; )I had an appointment on Monday to see my family MD -just a regular meeting, nothing special. I have amajor problem with migraines. When I get one, itusually lasts several days. I am certainly not fit todrive on those days. I called to cancel my appointmentand the office manager, (the doctor's wife), said that'per the MD - He had lost enough money on me and hewould no longer see me.' I was shocked. This MD hadbeen more than just a doctor. He was a friend as well.Since I had been a pharmacist, he often discussed newdrugs with me. I had called my pain MD's office to getreferral and they said that they couldn't give me one.I hope that doesn't cause a problem with my pain med.Has this happened to you and would you do?; )Willow
