We have been enjoying reading about bilateral surgeries recently and

there have been some who have questioned how there have been so many

recent insurance approvals.

I heard from a reliable (please note that I said heard) that some

major insurance companies have relaxed the criteria for approval of

cochlear implant surgery which has opened the door to some of these

sequential bilateral surgeries. It seems that they are approving

based on the loss in the ear that is being implanted and not based on

the total amount of hearing.

If this is the case, I think we have somehow had a positive effect on

the insurance companies. Perhaps they now realize that allowing the

deaf the full spectrum of hearing is worthwhile.

I also think (and hope) that by seeing this happen more and more, we

will also see the door to more and more unilateral approvals and less

and less denials. These studies that people participate in are very

important for future candidates.
