Subject: Define Karma http://www.experiencefestival.com/a/Karma/id/1208 KARMA IN THE DHARMA BASED RELIGIONS Karma in Hinduism Karma in Hinduism differs from karma in Buddhism and Jainism, and involves the role of God. Within Hinduism, Karma appears to function primarily as a means to explain the Problem of evil. One of the first and most dramatic illustrations of Karma can be found in the great Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. The original Hindu concept of karma was later enhanced by several other movements within the religion, most notably Vedanta, and Tantra. Karma literally means " deed " or " act " and more broadly names the universal principle of cause and effect, action and reaction which governs all life. Karma is not fate, for man acts with free will creating his own destiny. According to the Vedas, if we sow goodness, we will reap goodness; if we sow evil, we will reap evil. Karma refers to the totality of our actions and their concomitant reactions in this and previous lives, all of which determines our future. The conquest of karma lies in intelligent action and dispassionate reaction. Not all karmas rebound immediately. Some accumulate and return unexpectedly in this or other births. It is considered an entirely impersonal and spiritually originated law that cannot be abrogated by any person but may be mitigated by God. Karma is not punishment or retribution, but simply an extended expression of natural acts. The effects experienced are also able to be mitigated by actions and are not necessarily fateful. Quoting Sai Baba [2] concerning the removal of problems, disasters, calamities, etc. in reference to karma: Any instant solution would go against the fundamental quality of nature itself as well as the Karmic law of cause and effect. Most people live in the material world of their desires and egos which is governed by the law. They reap the fruits of their actions. This brings about their evolution or devolution. If the Avatar intervenes to instantly solve their problems, it would stop all action, development, even evolution. This solution can be ruled out because it totally negates the natural laws. Karma - Buddhism In Buddhism, only intentional actions are karmic " acts of will " . The 'Law of Karma' refers to " cause and effect " , but Karma literally means " action " - often indicating intent or cause. Accompanying this usually is a separate tenet called Vipaka, meaning result or effect. The re-action or effect can itself also influence an action, and in this way, the chain of causation continues ad infinitum. When Buddhists talk about karma, they are normally referring to karma/action that is 'tainted' with ignorance - karma that continues to ensure that the being remains in the everlasting cycle of samsara. This samsaric karma comes in two 'flavors' - 'good' karma, which leads to positive/pleasurable experiences, like high rebirth (as a deva, asura, or human), and bad karma which leads to suffering and low rebirth (as a hell-sufferer, as a preta, or as an animal). There is also a completely different type of karma that is neither good nor bad, but liberating. This karma allows for the individual to break the uncontrolled cycle of rebirth which always leads to suffering, and thereby leave samsara to permanently enter Nirvana. The Buddhist sutras explain that in order to generate liberating karma, we must first develop incredibly powerful concentration, and proper insight into the (un)reality of samsara. This concentration is akin to the states of mind required to be reborn in the Deva realm, and in itself depends upon a very deep training in ethical self-discipline. This differentiation between good karma and liberating karma has been used by some scholars to argue that the development of Tantra depended upon Buddhist ideas and philosophies. Karma is related to the notion of Buddhist rebirth - sometimes understood to be the same thing as reincarnation - which has its roots in the principle of Karma. New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Karma (Sanskrit " deed, " " action, " " ritual, " " result " ) A central Indian term with various meanings. 1) Any mental, verbal, or physical action or intention, especially a morally correct or textually prescribed activity. 2) The results or consequences of actions or intentions. 3) The Hindu principle of cause and effect, originally developed in South Asian religions, that determines one's past, current, and future existences. Everything we do produces some effect, now or later, on the physical or astral planes. Representing neither good nor evil, all actions and events cause corresponding actions and events in the past or future (including past and future lives through reincarnation). 4) Ritual activity, particularly the ancient Indian rites propitiating a pantheon of gods as prescribed in the Vedic texts. Ritual performance might be done to meet religious obligations, such as initiation into the community, to honor one's ancestors, or to fulfill individual desires such as wealth, progeny, or immortality. The results of ritual, which are also called karma, were sometimes interpreted as " unseen " (apurva), that is, postponed or not yet noticeable in order to explain apparently delayed consequences. While all could admit that actions would eventually bear consequences, the doctrine of unseen results provoked lively debate and reconsideration of the importance of ritual. 5) The erroneous western interpretation: That the good and bad deeds that we do adds and subtracts from our accumulated record, our karma. At the end of our life, we are rewarded or punished according to our karma by being reincarnated into either a painful or good new life. (see Karma) Kalki about Karma The Golden Age Foundation is a spiritual institution, born in India and globally known as Kalki Dharma, created with the one objective of helping Humanity to discover and experience the truths of the ancient principles and live in harmony with the Universe. Kalki, or Sri Kalki Bhagavan, the founder of Golden Age Foundation, is considered to be the Kalki Avatar capable of bringing enlightenment and to introduce the Golden Age. Here he is commenting on Karma. Question: Will karma not end at any point of time, I have been told that even an enlightened person have karma? Kalki: We do not speak of your karma or her karma. There is no individual karma at all. There is only human karma. Now Ramana Maharishi had cancer. So did Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Others had other problems. You cannot be-come free of karma totally because it is not your karma and moreover there is no you at all in the first place. I told you the ?Self? is only an illusion, it can just disappear. So how could there be your karma? Now, often you find that you are being distracted by various thoughts. Just like we breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide; we breathe in thoughts and we breathe out thoughts. There is the thought sphere, which contains all the thoughts of people who have lived from last eleven thousand years. All their experiences, ideas, views etc. are stored here. This is called Human karma. This human Karma is flowing through you. Like for example, you are living in the city of Chennai that is polluted; you have to breathe in that pol-luted air. You cannot escape it or be free of it. So, it is this Man?s karma that is influencing you all the time. But then can man be free of all the present karma accumulated in all these thousands of years? Yes, it is possible! Now, where do you think the thought sphere is stored? These thoughts are stored in the earth?s magnetic field. Whatever has happened the last eleven thousand years is stored here. I told you about Schumann?s resonance (earth?s heartbeat) which used to be 7.8 cycles per second and has now become 11 sec-onds per second and if you work mathematically, in the year 2012 it is going to be 13 cycles per second and, When this happens the earth?s magnetic field would vanish or become very, very weak for about three days. Now, we have the earth?s core which is rotating and that is responsible for the magnetic field. The earth itself is passing through what is called photon belt, which is what is slowing it down. So, it will slow down and probably come to zero when the earth?s resonance is 13 cycles per second and then it would start rotating again, but in the opposite direction. Has this happened before? Yes, we have plenty of fossil evidence to show that this has happened almost every eleven thousand years. And more so, almost all the ancient scriptures of the world from India to Tibet, China to South America to Central America? all speak of this phenomenon. Now, suppose, you are programming a computer and there is a power failure, the entire program is deleted. That is why you have the uninterrupted power supply, the U.P.S. Just the same way, when the earth?s resonance reaches 13 cycles per second there is some kind of power failure and the magnetic field vanishes and when the magnetic field vanishes the thoughts stored there also would vanish. With all that, all the records of eleven thousand years go away. When this happens, man would become free of karma. This has happened many times and there are scriptures that speak about this. But now even if you are enlightened, you are not going to be free of karma. Even Ramana or you must breathe the same air. The only difference is Ramana doesn?t suffer psychologically as his ?self? has dissolved. But, for the karma to dissolve completely and not come back, a minimum of 60,000 people must have become enlightened by 2012. It is only then a new world would emerge. That is why all of you have to prepare yourselves for mukti as quickly as possible. It is very important. It's here! Your new message! Get new email alerts with the free Toolbar.
