Guest guest
Meryl, My husband and I support you and appreciate your dedication to our sons and the sons and daughters, husbands and wives of all military personnel. When our son, Adam, refused the shot on 12/2/98 in Okinawa, I prayed that God would send someone to help. You were one of those people that God chose to send because you didn't hesitate to pick up your phone and call Adam all the way in Okinawa. He couldn't believe that someone who didn't even know him was interested in his welfare. He felt alone and out of touch and you opened a window for him. Romans 5:3,4 " And not only so, but we glory in tribulation also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope... " Thank you. & Al New York

Guest guest
Hello, Meryl, I can understand exactly what you are saying about not feeling benefitted by your CI. I was hooked up in Nov. 2002, and still am not getting speech distinction worth talking about. I, too, felt I wasn't benefitting. I don't know what to tell you to do to improve, as I'm still trying things to do that, too. I do wear my hearing aid in my unimplanted ear. I am finding that wearing my hearing aid alone anymore is not enough sound. This is what tells me that, despite my yearning to understand speech better, I am benefitting from the CI. I do go to audio/verbal therapy a few times a month. This process allows the therapist to see what sounds you are missing, which can be reported to your audiologist to help find a better map for you. Some sounds are directly related to an electron that can be " tweaked " to bring that sound in better. Activities such as listening to tapes, a.m. radio stations, and TV news programs are recommended for listening practice. I have my doubts that this works, but others swear by it. The therapist also can point to small progress that it is hard to notice for yourself. This builds some confidence and, for me, encourages me to go back to the activites mentioned for another try. I wish I could give you more definitive ideas, but for some of us, this CI thing is just going to take a lot more time. I will tell you that after a year with one audiologist, and having the feeling you describe, I did switch audiologists. This has put things in perspective and I feel as though I am starting fresh. I have had some small gains since I've changed and the audiologist I work with reminds me that small steps add up after time. Hang in there, I wish you well!
