How many of you are able to hear in a large conference room or auditorium without an FM system? When I talked to my audi earlier this month, she kept reminding me that even with a CI, I still may need to use an FM system to hear in noise or when the speaker is quite a distance away from me. Although I'm not doubting her, I would like to know how many of you (particularly those who have one CI) are able to understand speech in this kind of environment. Thanks in advance! As Alice mentioned, SHHH would have the room set up to fit the needs of its attendees. Some conferences I could hear with CI alone; other conferences I needed the FM. Guest guest Posted May 22, 2004 Report Share Posted May 22, 2004 , I just finished participating in a training for SHHH's new National Center for Hearing Assistive Technology (NCHAT). The " students " were all SHHH members who agreed to do outreach on Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT). Two the seven students had CI's (One had one implant and switched between a BWP and an BTE and the other had bilateral BTE's). All the participants had used HAT before, but during that weekend we all (I programmed a very low power hearing aid for myself so I could evaluate different technology) used a wide variety of FM, Infrared, induction loops systems with a even wider variety of microphones. The classroom was acoustically pretty good (small, relatively quiet), we also had CPRINT and all the presenters were used to speaking to hard of hearing people (slower pace, good projection, well trimmed moustaches). The interesting thing was that on the first day, the participants seemed to be using the HAT because they had to, but by the middle of the second day (it was a 3 day training), the first thing they said after breaks was " What are we using next? " I think that your audiologist is rare in that from what I hear on many lists, many consumers are hearing about HAT on listservs, not from their audiologists. I really believe that using HAT is like anything else in the hearing loss game. You need to use it a while in a variety of your own real life situations to see if the benefits outweigh the costs (money, logistics, etc). There are a few studies out there that clearly indicate that people with cochlear hearing loss and hearing aids require 18 to 20 dB signal to noise ratio to hear as well in adverse situations compared to 6 dB signal to noise ratio for a person with normal hearing.
