I do want to have implant now. The reason why I'm a bit worried with Med-El

is not with the speech processor, but more on the side of the surgeon. It's

a nightmare when surgery goes wrong or electrodes not well-placed.

Any news whether other cochlear implant brand like Advance Bionics and

Med-El to come out something similar to that of Nucleus' Contour?

Hi Jerome,

I was implanted with the Nucleus 22 in 1996.Because of my otosclerosis 12

electrodes caused facial stimulation and had to be deactivated.I was

implanted with the N24Contour on my other ear in 2001.Because the

selfcurling 22 electrode array is placed close to the inner wall of the

cochlea and farther away from my facial nerve only 4 electrodes were

deactivated.Immediately at my activation of the N24C I was hearing high

pitched sounds that i could not hear with my n22. Those electrodes were

deactivated on my N22.So for me the N24C proved to be the better implant for

my personal loss.

-Hi Jerome

Looks like your in that twilight zone of choosing brands. Take

Alice's and a few others here advise, it worked for me. I was

comfortable with all three brands. I tried to choose my surgeon and

CI team wisely. They implant all brands and the audi teams work with

all brands. In reading posts here I realized as many said, all three

work. Everyone has a different journey.

I looked and read all the brochures and then I held all three brands

before choosing. The new AB 90K had the curl at the end of the

electrode, I asked about this curl as all the liturature showed it

straight. I was told the new ones have a precurl to them. Maybe

someone here can verify that. I didn't choose because of a precurl as

I have seen all three brands have successful users. I had confidence

in my surgeon that an implant would be done and positioned perfectly.

Keep reading and ask to see each implant, you can get an idea from

the audi just in the way they explain each one, which ones they are

more comfortable in working with. Your own answer will come to you

and it will always be your right answer.

Good luck I know how confusing everything can get at this point

Hi ,

I'm not into brands... I'm into CURLS. :)

All brands will prove to be successful, however, the CURL thing will improve

the rate of success and minimize the need for repeated surgery.

As soon as all do have CURL thing, I won't care about the brand thing at

all.

Jerome,

While I agree that getting the electrode array closer to the nerve

fibers is one key to better outcomes, remember that as in hearing aids,

" success " is much more than a single measure (i.e. word or sentence

recognition).

When looking at which implant to get, also look at things like batteries

(type, life, your ability to handle them) how compatible the system is

with Hearing Assistive Technologies like FM, loops etc, and the

availability of professional resources. It really surprises me how

many people live so far from their centers/ audiologists. I would think

it would be very important to have someone available LOCALLY who can at

least trouble shoot, but maybe I'm wrong.
