Hi Alice, Patti, and Sharon,

Many thanks for your wishes. Just one more day. Now after reading all of

the posts about people not hearing or understanding after their first

mapping, I'm more nervous! One of my fears is that I will hear more sounds

but the clarity would be terrible! My audiologist had suggested that I not

wear my HA for a while to get used to the CI. Since I depend on my hearing

at work, I don't think so. Will see how it goes tomorrow.

Regards,

Sam

Alice,

I wish that was the case in the CI providing more clarity than the hearing

aids. For me easy sentence discrimination with the CI was 76% and with the

hearing aid the standardized word discrimination was 96% before I lost it.

How i mourn that hearing.

Hi Alice and all,

Well, today was my hook up day. As I feared, all I've gotten so far is a

bunch of static and beeps. My first thought was " I gave up my residual

hearing for this? " . The audie warned me it would be this way for the first

couple of weeks. I had hope to have some speech discrimination but not at

all. My audie wanted me to try going without my HA for a while but I told

him no as I depend on my hearing at work. So we agreed that I will take the

HA off after work and try just the CI. So far I'm tolerating the noise.

The first sounds I've recognized so far are the clicking of the keyboard. I

ve heard the chiming of the grandfather clock and the running of the water

in the sink which don't sound like what I'm used to hearing. Just now I've

started hearing the clicking of the grandfather clock. So I'm trying to be

patient while things get better. I'll go back next week for another mapping

Will keep you posted as time goes on.

Regards,

Sam

Sam,

These are " baby steps " as Alice would say. I don't find this all

surprising -- after all, it's my turn soon in 4 weeks for my own hook

up day. I remember getting my new powerful frequency transposition

hearing aids for the first time 8 years ago and thinking that

everything was too noisy, like plastic bags, grandfather clocks

tick-tocking, water running, AC fans whirring... and these are in fact

are normal sounds that hearing people hear all the time... and with

time, I gradually got used to these sounds. But I still had no speech

discrimination with these hearing aids -- too hard to hear all the

high frequency sounds (which were transposed to low frequency sounds

which I could still hear anyway) -- which I hope to be able to hear

with my CI eventually.... no expectations, high hopes here! Remember

you have more MAPpings to come.

Thanks for sharing your first impressions.

Were you prelingual?
