Carolyn, When are you going to have your fill? My friend,

had her surgery with Dr Aceves last year but now she is at the point

where she can eat normal. Is this a common problem?

I hope everything works out this time! I bet you will be very

restricted after the fill in Mexicali and begin to lose quickly again.

Maggie, As I understand it that is when you are supposed to get another fill, when you can eat more than you should according to your new diet. I understand this is normal but haven't had surgery yet and do not know personally.

I am wondering if your brother in-law was the one I met when I was

there with in October last year. There was a man and a woman

there when we were there. I am thinking it is the same person.

Nina, do you know?

THE FOLLOWING IS NOT FOR THE SENSITIVE Sorry to be Yukky

I mean spitting up mucus flem whatever you may call it. When you have surgery, well maybe not everyone, but when I had surgery there was build up of flem in my lungs. This is why they give us a triflo meter to exercise our lungs in order to get the stuff out. Well this stuff needs to be spit out. Do not swallow it, it could block the band and this could lead to other stuff....ben there, done that. Do not know if this is why my band slipped and I had to go under again. Anyway I did not have nice pretty tissues with me. I ended up uusing the paper from the hospital and I so wish I had had some tissue with me. Oh this all will pass but I had it for few days after the surgery.

Last minute advice.....try not to be nervous...easier done than said....bring a bottle of gathorade or smart water. I wish I had. I felt I could have used it, escpecially on the trip back to airport. Yeah and some tissues, you must spit stuff out definetly not swallow

Enjoy the rocks, they are breathtaking. Good luck and please ask Nina to post how you are doing.

OK let me tell you the story, I only updated my obesityhelp profile, did not want to cause any alarm for anyone since there was no need for it.

Here is the story, if anyone really wants to know.

When I woke up from the surgery I was in severe pain. I was in so severe pain that I was shaking up and they got the Doctor and gave me a shot. This made me feel better. I was at this point coughin alot since threre was alot of flem in my lungs, and I am not even a smoker. I do not know if I swallowed any of the flem and if so if this contributed to my problem. Once I was returned to the room I had to immediately use the bathroom and after this they gave me a little water to drink. I was in pain and even Nina commented that I should not be in pain. Now I have a very high treshold for pain. I suffer from aggresive form of Reumatic Arthritis so I usually do not complain from small stuff. Regardless I was in pain. Everyone kept on telling me that all would be ok, so I thought that I was just being a baby. Doctor Aceves told me to let me know if I needed anything and that he would come if necessary. I had requested something to sleep so it was missery to wake up

every couple of hours in pain. I did try to communicate my discomfort to the nurses but my spanish is not great. Once the morning came I had been drinking water and vomitting all I drank. When Dr. Aceves came I was trowing up all the time, and in total discomfort. I felt like someone had hit me with a baseball bat between my shoulder blades and a elephant was sitting on my chest.Suddenly I felt the need to really vomit and I barely made it to the bathroom, well I did miss the floor and I had at this time bloody vomit....but now I did feel better. Dr. Aceves told me that he would need to operate again since my band had slipped. So of we went. The second surgery was a piece of cake. I welt no discomfort afterwords, none what so ever. I recovered immediately and Dr. Aceves told me he put in 3 stitches to hold the band in place. I feel so lucky having chosen Dr. Aceves as my surgeon. This could have happened anywhere, luckily Dr. Aceves is so skilled that he was able to mend the

damage and I did not loose the band and there was no harm done. I am so lucky that I know what a slipped band feels like and I never want to feel this again. It makes me extra carefull with my band and I baby it as I should. What happened to me only happens to about 2% of patients, per Dr. Aceves. We do not know why it happened, did I swallow flem that blocked the band? Did I drink water too soon. Maybe my body did not want to be banded, who knows. No amount of speculation can answer the reason, I was lucky I had arranged initially to stay one more night than normally. Since my RA I was scared to fly so soon after surgery and had opted for the xtra night, lucky me. I am so glad I learned from this experience, and I appreciate the knowledge it gave me. I definetly do not want to scare anyone, actually the oposite. What happended is rare, but this is kind of the worse case senario and it was not really that bad, I lived and learned. Hopefully all the newbies will now know that the

worse that could happen is really not that bad, and Dr. Aceves can truly fix anything. So me and flem do not have a good relationship, me and Triflow II do. Anyway if you go to my picturetrail http://www.picturetrail.com/gid5287618 you can view the flouro pictures of both the bad and the good band. So I am the lucky one who has two band dates.

Hi,

There is a group that is doing a market research in order to find out

if it is profitable to set what they call " laparoscopic banding

adjustment centers " to do fills for everyone including patients who

had the band out of the USA.

Judging by the questions they are asking they want to see if there

enough patients needing the service and how much they could charge

for the fills to see if it's worth it.

They are still in the research stage, though.

I will let you know if we hear they are going through with this.

Good Morning Everyone,

Al, Yes we can do this! I know the cost for the x-ray room is 80 dlls I would need to check what the cost for fills are since our patiens have them for free, but I am sure we can do this. I will ask the doctor and get back on the cost. I am glad you thought about this we might finally get you down here!

By the way, Dr. Aceves is out of the country so if anyone calls his cell phone it won't work. If you need to ask him something we are communicating via e mail all this week.

As I always do things different than most, I am inquiring about doing the reverse. As you are aware, I was banded by Dr. Juarez in Phoenix and have received the two "free" fills. While these fills were free from medical fees, each fill cost me a whole days wages, 7 hours of driving time and $57. in gas. What I would like to do in the future is to have your office perform my future fills as Mexicali is only 70 miles from Yuma. A Mexicali fill would only cost me about $20. in gas, just over 2 hours driving time, no loss of work (I work afternoons) plus your fill fees. My question is, does your office perform fills for patients who have had the band placed by other surgeons? I would have asked in a private inquiry but there might be others out there with the same question who might benefit from your reply. Thanks Al Yuma, AZ Dr. Juarez, Phoenix 9/1/04

Hi everyone,

I wanted to answer Al's question about fills. The cost of the fill for non patients is $180 dlls including Fluoro.

Just a reminder that we require that patients have nothing to eat the day of the fill, it is usually done around noon. You will be on liquids for a few days after the fill. You will also start losing wegiht again :)

Hi Carla,

You can read all about fills here: http://tracyslapband.com/journal.htm#First%20Fill I hope that link works for you. It is to my web site where I describe my first fill. You can also go to http://www.google.com and google a lot of your questions about the lapband. Lots of info out there. Basically it is an office visit, and some have had success with getting insurance to cover. The average cost is $250 for fills with flouro but you have to check around. Some are higher.

By the way, even though most say you can get your fill at 6 weeks, I wouldn't recommend getting a fill until you have been on solids at least a week. And if you follow Dr. A's post op diet, that means not until your 8th week. But if you have not been following the diet and have been on solids in your 5 th week, then you should know if you need a fill or not by your 6th week. Make sense?

My name is Carla or Catmama and I am new on the block so I really don't know what Isopure is but do take a powdered vitamin mineral supplement that you mix with water or juice. It called Emer'gen-C and comes in various fruit flavers with the addition of various minerals to suit your liking. I usually use the one that adds chondroitin but you can get it with extra calcium or whatever. I usually pour it with a bottle of spring water and shake and sometimes I add a vanilla package of HMR 500 for a full breakfast. I this a drink (Isopure) for a complete meal except it is clear?

Hey Shari,

I am so glad you and Verline had a good experience. I hope we can get together someday and go to Mexicali for a fill at the same time :0)

I will be driving through Boise the second week of April. Maybe we can get together and meet. I am hoping to hook up with Vesper in Salt Lake as well. My daughter is getting married in Salt Lake on April 22nd.

We have such a great family here on this site. I wish I could meet everyone.

Again, I am glad you got back safe and sound.

I go to Obisity Surgery Center in Houston but they do not have flouro.

I have been there 4 times and have never had a problem with them

finding the port. The fee is $200 - cash only

If you are interested, call and ask for Terry 1-800-664-9177

she schedules the fills.

Seems to me it's a crap shoot. I had a fill 10 days ago and had fairly good restriction. For about a week I was VERY aware of the band. It lasted about 7-8 days, but i'm beginning to feel hungry again and thinking about food more often. I read on another message board last night that it often takes 3-4 fills before you find your "sweet spot". And that often the 1st fill or two are temporary. I'm not sure why, but i would be interested to hear others experiences. 3-4 fills the first year is kinda pricey at $200-250.00 a shot. Kari

// I read on another message board last night that it often takes

This is correct.

As you lose weight, you will lose fat around your stomach. This will

in turn loosen the band. You will need an adjustment to feel

restriction again. Depending on how much you get for each fill, you

could need 10 or more fills before you hit your sweet spot.

I have had 4 fills and may have a tweak soon.

// 3-4 fills the first year is kinda pricey at $200-250.00 a

You are right it is not cheap. This should be considered when you are

thinking about getting the band. You must take in account the cost of

fills the first year.

Yes it is. If you coming with her it is easier because you will be

there and when the doctor is done with surgeries he can see you. He

has a busy day so I cannnot tell you an exact time but he can see you

for sure.

could get my band checked and get a fill I would come out with her?
