Guest guest
Hi Thanks for responding. So, if belief is not a concern why is it necessary to say anything? We have to say was bothers us during this ritual of tapping for example: if one has a phobia or fear it is usually acknowledge. I guess I am trying to understand. Guest guest
Hi RN, > So, if belief is not a concern why is it necessary to say anything? The setup statement has at least 3 simultaneous functions and i think it acquires more with use over time (in my view). But in terms of your question, the purpose of saying what the problem is to get tuned in to the problem and keep tuned in. And the purpose of " being tuned in " is to get intense enough for the tapping to have an effect. Put it another way, by saying the trigger words, you TRY to trigger the emotional intensity in yourself. The tapping only has the calming/releasing effect that it has in relation to the specific emotional trigger being focussed on - which is why emphasisies being specific. so in the case of a phobia, saying the word " spider " would make a spider phobic have intensity - it triggers the " program " that the body had learned to run when it thinks of spiders. By tapping, this interrupts the program by causing the system to go calm. After a few times (usually) the body seems to relearn how to respond to the trigger i.e. be staying calm. Saying a reminder phrase as you tap on each point serves the same purpose - keeping you tuned and focussed on the problem. (So if you're already very intense, it is often the case that you don't need to say the problem in the setup at all - becasue you're already right there and don't need any reminders! But you might still want the reversal correction function and so you'll do it anyway). AT least this is how it SEEMS to be working - and the above is only my personal understanding and might not be really what's happening (I'm an Experimental Psychologist by training so an explanation that uses stimulus-reponse model of behaviour comes naturally to me - someone with a different background might come up with a different metaphor or explanation) As himself says - we don't really know, scientifically, how this works - we just observe that it seems to work a lot of the time. ________________________________________________________________ L.R.
