Hi Sue!

My advise on improved poopies is to experiment with both quantity and

type of fiber. I tried for over a year to embrace the citrucel, and

finally settled on Benefiber clear. It is not Dr R's first choice,

but we need our fiber and coating action and have to do what works to

get it daily. He wants us to watch particularly for " hidden sugars "

and that I found in most fiber except citrucel. I put the clear in

anything and never know it's there.

Psyllium husk, which is an alternative in the manual, is just

metamucil by its generic name from what I've read on labels. It

cramps me but some find it the only way to " go " . (Sorry, never can

resist a pun.)

It's important to find the right daily quantity for yourself as well.

Since fiber is a regulator and not a laxative, the answer may be more

or less than the recommendation for any individual. Since fiber traps

fat, I have worked up to four to six tablespoons a day with no

adverse effect. Be aware (if you aren't) that too much too fast will

often cause cramps, diarrhea and gas. You have to increase gradually.

The other thing I identified as a major issue for me was juices.

Making a juice based smoothie every morning just totally defeated all

efforts to regulate the action. For me, fruit smoothies are an

occasional treat, not a daily ritual. I can eat all the fresh, frozen

or canned fruit I care to eat, but juice causes immediate havoc for

me. The exception is tomato or V8, which is fine.

For me, there are no solid trouble foods (except the well documented

fats and sweets) but many of us find dairy, especially ice cream,

will provoke action unexpectedly :-) It might help to keep a food

diary for a few days to identify any problem foods causing your

problem.

Getting the fiber right and keeping it right is a challenge, but it

really pays off in so many ways. Also, I believe others have reported

diarrhea from actigal, so the problem may resolve itself with that

change, too. I lost so slowly I never reached the 10 pounds per month

to start actigall, so anything I say on that subject is just gossip.

Be well! And keep matches in the ladies loo.

Hi Sue,

TJ has great advice. I agree with her on the fiber. I finally found that

taking two fiber Metamucil pills gave me the correct amount of fiber. The

powder didn't seem to produce the desired effect and the pills are much easier

to take. It was a little bit of a process to figure out what worked for me.

I too had nausea, diarrhea, and dizziness with the actigall and stopped

taking it. I haven't had any issues but I wonder if that is because I had my

gall bladder removed years ago. Good luck and keep trying...you will figure out

what is best for you.
