Hi ,

The way the implant works is to deliver electrical impulses to the

auditory nerve to be interpreted by the brain as sound. This is very different

from

a hearing aid which simply amplfies whatever sound is coming in. However,

those electrical impulses can be made louder or lower to our perceptions by the

software as well. I haven't clue as to how that works!!

Do speech processors have a volume control on them to make the sounds you

hear louder? I thought CIs don't make sounds louder. Could you explain

further? Thanks!!

HI, I haven't posted here in a long time, but I was perusing the

messages and thought I'd respond to this one.

I can't tell you technically how it works, but the microphone on the

CI works the same way a mic on a hearing aid works. It takes in

sound from the environment and delivers it to you at whatever volume

you have your processor or hearing set to. The difference in

discrimination comes from the internal components of the CI and the

way they stimulate the auditory nerve. Because a hearing aid lacks

this ability, sounds can only be made louder, not more distinct.

It's done thru the level of current (if I remember it correctly, or was it

voltage?)

For high frequency sound, the part near the outside is being stimulated, for

low frequency sound, it's the part inside.
