Guest guest
Here is info I have Carol.. Definition of acid refluxAcid Reflux or GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease), is achronic condition leading to mucosal damage of the esophaguslining. When people experience acid reflux, acid is pushed upfrom the stomach into the esophagus, causing the esophagus toget red, irritated and sometimes ulcerated. If the acid con-tinues to reflux into the esophagus, esophagus ulcers can form. What is the cause of acid reflux? For some people, the acid reflux is related to the incorrector partial functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter, agroup of muscles that normally close off the esophagus fromthe stomach, keeping the food in the stomach. GERD can alsobe caused by asthma, especially if asthma started as an adultand does not seem to respond to asthma medication.Other indications that GERD may play a role in asthma suffe-rers,is if a person notices that their asthma symptoms mayget worse after exercise, after a meal, at night or afterlying down. What can cause shortness of breath? When acidenters the esophagus, a nerve reflex is triggered which cancause airways to narrow, therefore causing shortness ofbreath. Other causes for an esophagus ulcer can occur afterfood poisoning, excessive vomiting, surgery or side effectsof medications such as ibuprofen, aspirin and others. What are acid reflux symptoms?Symptoms you can experience are difficulty swallowing, apainful burning sensation, of the esophagus, nausea andheartburn. The esophagus can also get infected, raw andirritated due to a weakened immune system (HIV), medicationssuch as corticosteroids as well as by viruses such as herpes, candida infection or fungi. Once the esophageal tissue isinflamed and infected, an ulcer can result thereof. How can I prevent getting acid reflux?Eat small, balanced meals throughout the day and maintain ahealthy weight Within 3 hours of going to bed, avoid anyfoods or liquids. Elevate the head of your bed by 5-6 inches,in order to keep the food and liquids in the stomach. AvoidSmoking, alcohol, coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate and fattyfoods, as all these items tend to relax the esophagealsphincter.Keep the consumption of acidic foods to a minimum such astomatoes, oranges, lemons, grape fruits and fruit juices,as these types of foods can irritate the esophagus. Exer-cise of any kind is a great stress reliever, also increasingthe secretion of the 'good mood hormone' serotonin. Ifexercise is not your thing, try meditation and other stressreducing strategies such as a walk outdoors in fresh airand sunshine. What kinds of foods to avoid with acid reflux?Following is a common list of foods to avoid, in additionto the foods that you observe that are causing you discomfortand pain after a meal.Foods to avoid:- Dairy products (milk, cheese)- Wheat (gluten sensitivity)- Deep fried, fatty foods- Vegetables that cause gas such as beans and broccoli- Artificial sweeteners- Caffeine- Alcohol- Chocolate - yes chocolate...We recommend seeing your nutrition specialist for a morepersonalized list of foods to avoid and food to enjoy. What kinds of food to enjoy with acid reflux?By adding 'good bacteria' such as yoghurt and acidophilussupplements, may help balance the micro-flora in theintestines. Guest guest
Suzi, Thanks for the research. I am still thinking sauerkraut + tomatoes may have been the culprit as well as looking at tons of tomatoes on my counter, in large storage tub, in living room boxes--all the over places--green, some getting red, some red, some little orange for Roma tomatoes, others getting brighter orange, etc. I may be inhaling them too. Need more water however. Going to monitor me more now....maybe I need to increase my barley power too...think that is one solution......Thanks. carolg Here is info I have Carol..
