Guest guest
FYI NEW YORK (AP) - NBC's Al Roker reports on his health since his gastric bypass surgery, and the potential dangers and benefits involved in the procedure, in an hour-long special to air Friday night on " Dateline NBC. " Roker, the weatherman on the network's " Today " Show, underwent gastric bypass surgery two and one-half years ago. " For anybody who thinks that this is a magic bullet - you do this and it's done. You're making a mistake. It's not, " he says. In the four-part report, " Weighing the Risks, " Roker talks to teens, parents and a physician about some possible dangers, and whether teens have a tougher time dealing with emotional and physical changes that come with the surgery. Guest guest
I missed this! Did anyone see it, and could they report back on how it was? I'd gotten the impression that AR had gained back some weight...was this addressed on the show? I wonder how much total weight he has lost... Joanie 5/25/04 Drs. Guest guest
No he did not address the subject of weight gain. He doesn't appear to have gained any back (or not much). They focused more on what a serious decision to have surgery is and what how one patient died after having a leak. They talked about how some people morn the loss of food. I'm glad we had the MGB. in MO 12-16-03 Dr. H Joplin 269/
Guest guest
He's lost 120. he still struggles with food addiction like most of us but exercises and continues fighting the fight. I think the main thing they said is that WLS is not a magic pill, you still have to work on the behavior which is so true. It's frustrating that they dont' know about the mgb, which has so much less complication. ONe of the biggest things is the way leaks are dealt with . When the guy developed a leak, they put him in the hospital and " watched it " . With the mgb, as soon as the leak is suspected, they put you right back in the operating room and repair it. This prevents all the poison from leaking into the system and killing you. What the heck, you already have the incisions, they haven't even healed, it makes much more sense. The whole operation makes so much more sense. I don't think Al Roker has gained much back, maybe a few. HE looks great. barb dudley
Guest guest
Thanks Barb, I didn't get to see the show last night. I meant to tape it but forgot. I have wondered about Al's take on the surgery now. I too wish they knew about MGB, but someday! Right staff?
