,

I can imagine how disappointed you are about missing so many of

Chauncey's firsts, but let me say, you will also be there for a good

number of firsts.. it's an ongoing process so there will be a lot of

firsts for many months to come. :)

Kind of like a mom who has to return to work and leave her youngster

in day care.. she misses some things, but she also gets to see many

of them too. Just try not to let it get you down and be happy for

what Chauncey is going to gain from all of this, You'll get your

rewards down the road and although I know it's going to be

disappoiting, I'm just guessing that after the initial adjustment

period there will be many more firsts that he will actually

understand and you will be there to witness them.

Hugs and hang in there.

thanks Alice, i will forward this to him so he can understand more

what will probably happen. and he's watching his CI video again so

he can be ready for tomorrow.

i'm sorry you misunderstood me, i am getting a half day off tomorrow

to go to the activation, i was more upset about missing his first day

at home, on thursday playing with things and hearing them for the

first time.(he's taking the day off and i'm stuck working)

and i was really disapointed about his having to work all weekend

sat, sun and mon. i think i will go out of my mind!

his mom is going to the appointment tomorrow, we will share the time

in the small room with him, and she will tape when she's in with him

and i will do the same. but i know that after the appointment and we

get home, he will probably be so exhausted, and go rite to sleep!

i guess i was just being selfish and greedy, but i couldn't help it.

(pms and all)

he did say that he goes every year to see the fire works at the Art

Museum, he parks his car far and then walks to see the show and feel

the music, and i feel much better knowing that we can share that and

i will have camcorder in hand! just spent another $100 on a five

hour battery!

i can't believe it's actually finally here. what an emotional

journey, and really it's just begining. i cant even imagin what it

will be like for him. i'm so excited but also so fearful. i'm sure

that it will all be so overwhelming for him but if i know Cherry, he

will not give up easily! he's so happy to have this chance and i

know tht whatever this brings him he will make the very best of it.

well, until tomorrow, if i'm not knocked out rite along with him!

take care,

m

> I can certainly understand your disappointment about this as you

have been there all the way thus far and will seemingly miss the

reward moment. Let me assure you that these initial mappings are

long and tedious. It's only after a couple of hours of setting the

comfort zones that you really begin to see what's going to happen.

Even then, probably the biggest thrill is the expression on the face

of the person who is activated. This can be observed well with the

camera. It actually may be a good thing for Cherry to be alone so

that he can concentrate on only the mapping. Distractions are not

helpful in this case.

>

> When you get home, he should be somewhat comfortable with his

equipment and then you can start the " firsts. " Go for a walk and let

him hear the footsteps under his feet. Let him listen to the cars

coming down the road. Let him try to hear all the environmental

sounds around him. Look at him when you talk to him but speak slowly

and clearly - nothing complex. He's like a baby with this new sense

and will need to take baby steps. His brain has filled in the area

that we are born with for sound with other things and it will take

time for his brain to open a spot for hearing. He may tell you he

doesn't hear things but instead he feels them in his head. He'll be

very tired in a relatively short period of time. If you want to be

the first words he hears, have him take a tape recorder with him with

a tape you have made saying Hi Cherry - Can you hear me? Maybe even

I love you. The audiologist can play this and can tape his

reaction.

and that's excatly how i thought about it yesterday!

i thought how do women do it! it is breaking my heart to have to

miss any little first!

but i am starting to calm down and realize that we have so much ahead

of us, and maybe better if he get a break from my hovering anyhow!

we are both so ready and tomorrow will be a day filled with wonder

from the time we open our eyes together in the morning to the time we

finally give it a rest and take our butts to bed!

have a great night, and take care,

well, we got a digital one that takes pictures too!

so no worries about that! and i even took some video of him reading

the posts!!!

look out, here he comes!

think his time alone with the new toy will be good for him. He can

do a little self testing. Tell him that the computer keys sound like

a clicking noise when he sends us his message about the mapping.

<grin>

the regular or digital camera for us so we can put some pictures on
