Cholesteatoma in the ear canal

HI. I am new to this, was just diagnosed with cholesteatoma in my right ear

canal, not on my eardrum but in the canal itself, which has ate through and

exposed the bone and has caused me an earache for the last 6 months. I cannot

wait for this earache to be gone but I am not looking forward to surgery.

Has anyone else ever heard of a c-toma in the ear canal? I have read many things

on cholesteatomas but so far all of them are about c-tomas that are on or behind

the eardrum. Just looking for some info and some support. Thanks.

My tumor (only discovered last month) is also in the ear canal, and from what my

doc admits is rare. He cannot tell the details too much from ct scan, so must

wait until surgery to find out how extensive it is. First I must have sinus

surgery, then the ear surgery will follow once that heals. In the meantime the

ear aches daily, the doc says it is possible to get a shot of medication (I

think a steriod) to reduce the inflamation. I will use that as a last resort.

My doctor cannot tell much so far from the ct scan that I have had, as in how

extensive the damage is, etc. He has given me Demerol for pain, 100 mg, and I

have to take phenergan with it so I won't be sick. I am allergic to many pain

pills, especially codeine/hydrocodone, and this is all we have found that takes

most the pain away. Loud noise and cold hurts it bad, so I walk around with

cotton in my ear most the time. Did your Dr. say or not that this could possibly

affect your hearing? Mine says not but that part worries me most. Thanks for

writing back. Let me know how it goes. Hope u are feeling better soon. I so can

sympathize with you.

Definitely it can affect your hearing. Evidently the tumor starts in the ear

canal but can wrap around into the middle ear. There it can continue to grow

disturbing hearing and equalibrium. From what I can find out, the only way to

be sure of its size is to operate. The good news is that conductive hearing loss

is more easily overcome with hearing aids. Hang in there and keep me posted.

I was afraid of that, that the c-toma could affect me hearing. I play music, or

used to, and would love to do it again, so it worries me a lot.You keep me

posted on yours and I will keep you posted on mine. Good luck. and thanks for

the info.

External Ear Canal Cholesteatoma is rare compared to cholesteatoma. It usually presents with ear pain or infections. Essentially there is exposed bone with skin within it that gets eroded. The good news is that it is usually lateral to the ear drum and is therefore away from the clockwork of the ear- the results should therefore be better with less risk to hearing and balance With best wishesMr WareingConsultant ENT SurgeonSt Bartholomews HospitalThe Royal London HospitalThe London Clinic145 Harley StreetLondon W1G 6BJwww.michaelwareing-ent.com020 7935 1304From: Stone Mother <stonemother@...>cholesteatoma Sent: Sun, 28 November, 2010 3:15:53Subject: Re: Cholesteatoma in the ear canal

Bless your heart for replying to me and giving me that info. That is basically

the same thing my first ENT said, and I am meeting the other Friday. Hopefully

he will have the same diagnosis and they can do the surgery through the canal

and not have to cut behind my ear. Also not having my hearing affected would be

wonderful. The one thing that worries me is I already have dizziness issues, to

the point that I cannot get up and walk, etc.. Does that mean that it could be

on or near my ear drum? My hearing in that ear is fine, but the pain can be

baaaaad sometimes.

Anyway, once again, thanks for the info. I do appreciate it much.

I hope all goes very well for you. The dizziness could be a sign that it is spread further than the doctor can see. Use an A+ doctor and you will be in good hands.
