Guest guest
While the Nucleus 24 Contour has 22 electrodes that deliver hearing to the auditory nerve, there are two more electrodes that are needed for grounding-type-electrical-stuff. Hardly technical but I don't understand engineering things! The C is for Contour which is the curl in the electrodae array desinged to get as close as possible to the delicate cochlear structures without damaging them. ********************************* Hi... this is probably a silly question, but here goes! Why is the N24C so named? It has 22 channels, but why " 24 " ? N = Nucleus, C = contoured, but 24 = ??? Guest guest
The grounding part is simple actually. Take a battery, a couple lengths of wire, a light and a switch. One side of the battery is negative (ground). Other side is positive. With switch off, there is no light because no juice is flowing due to an " open " in the circuit. Close the switch, the juice flows and the light goes on. You have a path for the juice to flow thru. Ahhh what is a short? Easy too. A short occurs when something gets across the wires at the wrong places. Put a short across the battery and you may have an explosion. Dont try it. A battery thus shorted out would be at maximum current flow and overheat. The heat would be the cause of the explosion. Mt St Helens is overheating but she aint shorted out, she is operating under a different law of physics. LOL The 2 " unused " electrodes provide that path. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory. -- & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Portland, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rlclark77@... http://home.comcast.net/~rlclark77/
Guest guest
Thanks... but tell me, how would someone get a " short " with those two unused electrodes under the skin? Through static electricity? And these " two unused " are actually those two wires inserted under the skull skin, whereas the 22 are inside the cochlea? Guest guest
Not to worry, I only mentioned " short " because shorts and opens are the common issues when dealing with electricity. The 2 are not unused. They have a purpose. As to the placement of those 2, good question. I am not sure. Hmmm. Back to the 22 (or 20 in when the 3G is used), some can be turned off if theyc ause problems, and will not affect performance. I may actually want one or 2 turned off because I am getting some facial stimulation, which usually can be mapped out. I know its not going to diminish the performance of my CI. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Time flies like an arrow. Guest guest
Hmmmmmm....verrrrrry interesting! Does this mean all Nucleus 24C recipients could become Jack-O-Lanterns on Halloween?? I've already told my friends that I'll be able to make my eyes glow in the dark! Heh, heh, heh --Gayle > The grounding part is simple actually.
