Guest guest
Lee, Yes it is a violation. But may IO offer another view on this? It is the very fact that the ADA is so ambiguous that causes those of us using legitimate service animals so much grief. Why? Because now every Tom Dick and Harry can claim they have a service animal. What to do about it? Well, those of us using guide dogs are already plainly visible since the dog uses a special harness. Apparently the clinic has been experiencing these bogus service animals which probably have been ill mannered, or poorly house broken, or both, who nose. Guest guest
Lee, I could be wrong but this is what I *think* -- Without an I.D. card *or* an orange leash or vest which identifies your dog as a hearing dog, a public establishment may have the right to refuse you admittance. It would be no different than me walking into my opthalmologist's office with Tigger minus her harness and claiming that she's a guide dog. Yes, I'm blind and Tigger is a guide dog but without the harness and proper identification, they don't know that. After all, I could have picked up any dog on the street and brought it into the office with me. I know that sounds absurd but this may be part of the reason why some businesses are so strict. Another problem is the fact that any Tom, Dick or Harry could bring in a dog claiming that it's a service animal who helps relieve depression, etc. You may want to check ADA guidelines for rules pertaining to this and send that in an e-mail to your audi. In my case, I always bring a picture I.D. In the 12 years I've used guide dogs, I've never been asked to show it. However, to avoid any potential problems with access, I carry it with me anyways because I know the one time I don't, someone will ask to see it. <grin>

Guest guest
You may get a few (very few) people who may take advantage of the situation If the their so-call service dog is not behaving, the owner do have the right to kick them out. This is the protection for people who do have service dog who need them. I know many people who have hearing dog take their dog everywhere. As the law is now, They don't have to have a certificate nor orange vest on the dog. until the law is change, They should accept the owner word for it. I don't believe that they should have a certificate as I know many people who trained their own dog and they do very well. But I think a vest would be appropriate as it shows people that they are working. -- Re: HEARING DOGGIE HELP Lee, Yes it is a violation. But may IO offer another view on this? Guest guest
>>My reason for NOT vesting my dog, is obvious, personal safety. I don't want to be " marked " .<< Lee, This is a valid concern and something I didn't even think about. Bringing a letter from your doctor is a good idea. That way you'd have some identification *if* it's requested. Now watch. You'll bring the letter and no one will ask you for it. I hope that's the case!! <smile>
Guest guest
>> But I think a vest would be appropriate as it shows people that they are working.<< This would also help differentiate between a legitimately trained service animal and a pet. Without *some* form of visual identification (whether it's an I.D. card, leash, vest, cape, harness, etc.) it becomes impossible to make this distinction. Guest guest
, Lee, Dave, I am one who will not " comply " with requests that are not legitimate. Omn the other hand, anyone can take their pets anyplace and claim its a working animal. Ok, while we as a whole are not supporting some kind of certification (and there have been many reasons stated why it would be impossible), I do want to see the pressure taken off us that IS a result of pseudo service animal users. But Lee, you not wanting to use a vest for the reason you stated is vaild. And since the ADA does NOT require the use of such, then take the letter but dont volunteer it unless you feel the person asking for it is someone who has a legit concern. (does that mean I am a wimp? nah, I think I know when to show mu ID. LOL After I ask to see the person's badge or whatever. And I want it in large print and braille please.) *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* Few women admit their age.
