The description of Curves are interesting.

Some YA I checked out a Bally and found it

alarming that they wanted me to sign a contract that I couldn't

take home with me to study first.

I have heard of fitness places that want you to sign a contract

which they then sell. Places where there is no guarantee that the facilities

and equipment will stay same or only get better, that if equipment fails it

won't

necessarily be repaired in a timely way.

That's what I do Sue, is one of 's tapes. I can only do the milder ones cuz of the arthritis, or what ever causes my body to always be stiff and hurting. I try to do a little bit of stretching. About three years ago my body started to become so stiff and sore where I was almost crippled. Had some surgical needle treatments on lower spine and a nerve leasioning and that helped alot. I wasn't so crippled up. I guess a little everyday, this list helps to attain that.Brigit

Wow, Sue, how different yours is than ours! Mine is also about a mile or so from my house--so convenient. I pay $39 a month, but I did sign for a year. If you go month by month without the year commitment, it's $49 a month. I did that the first couple of months to see if I liked it.

Those hours are for the birds!! Ours opens at 6 am and doesn't close until 7 p.m. If you come in at 7, that's fine, but that's the latest someone can start the 30 minute cycle. Our Curves is also open Saturdays until 11:30.

I don't blame you for not wanting the join the one by you!

You have to sign up for a year minimum, at $50/month at this one,but I know others in other parts of the country have no contracts and are upto $20 cheaper. Also the hours are crazy - 9am - noon then 1pm - 5p Mon thru Fri. That'sit - no evening, no weekend. Because of that, the place is always jammed andI've seen women waiting outside the place trying to get in. Because of that, people are only allowed to go one circuit - 30 minutes. If you want to domore, you have to go to the back of the line, if there is one. I know a lotof people who already said they're not renewing when their contract is up.This place didn't even honor the coupons for a free 1-week trial! They said"corporate" left it up to the individual franchises if they wanted to honorthem or not, and since they have plenty of customers without everadvertising they chose not to allow the free trials. The next closest one, next city over and on the highway next to K-Mart, hasbetter hours but charges even more.I guess I'm stuck with my videos and treadmill.Sue in NJwishing for a lucky lottery ticket100-Plus Files page 100-plus/files100-Plus Links page 100-plus/links

Whoops! All the commercials they show here only have plus-sized ladies in

them and advertise that the equipment is " your size " so I assumed they

leaned that way. Sorry.

I'm now 281. Not my highest, but very close. I expected a gain when I

dropped McDougall and no longer ate 1000 cal/day. It had gone up to 286 and

came back down a bit since last week.

I forgot to weigh in yesterday morning since I was busy getting stuff

together for the long drive to the dermatologist. No way was I driving 30+

miles to Houston without my book on tape! :) Time to request another one

from the library.

Ok. I'll go hop on the scale. Just a sec. I'll be right back.........

Huh???? I weigh 273. I lost 6 pounds in Savannah. I guess all that

swimming and walking without much snacking helped. 273 has been a very

common number since New Year's Day when I first saw it. That was my all

time high before that one time 279 weigh in.

This week I'll walk on the treadmill and do biceps, triceps, push-ups and

sit-ups every day. On Sunday Lynn and I will leave for guitar camp at Texas

State University at San Marcos, TX. That's a beautiful part of the state

with hills, trees and rivers. We'll be on a meal plan there and I guess it

will be cafeteria style. That will be tough. I'll just try to fill up with

lots of veggies and avoid the bread and dessert. Snacking will probably be

minimal which will help.

I have no idea how active we'll be since I don't know how far the dorm and

cafeteria will be away from the music building. I hope they have active

things for the kids to do. Surely they can't expect kids to sit still 8

hours a day and play their instruments. Swim suits aren't on the list of

things to bring so I'm guessing we can't use the university pools. There is

river swimming fairly nearby but I'm not sure we'll have time for that.

We'll take our suits just in case. Some guitar school friends will be going

to camp but staying in a hotel so maybe we can swim with them. The mother

is maybe 100 pounds. She's nice just a bit ditzy. Her kids are really nice

though.

Well, we'll make the best of it whatever it is. :) I'll just have to keep

in mind that I don't want to come home weighing 279 again.

We'll be home for a week and then we'll take our family summer vaction in

the pop-up camper. I know we'll be active then with lots of swimming.

School starts August 16 so our crazy schedules will settle down then. I'm

not even going to try to count calories or anything until then since I won't

have computer access at guitar camp or camping. I'm just not going to try

to start a formal eating plan while on vacation. I will try to make better

choices though which is hard to do when I'm in vacation mind set.

It's 9am so I can probably start using power tools in the driveway now. I

don't want to start too early and irritate the neighbors. I need to cut

some tile for 's table. Blech. It's a very messy job. I need to get

that tile laid today so I can grout it tomorrow.

A mother's work is never done. :)

Tina, The manager at the hotel that I'm living pays around $40-50 a month. Basicly the same price it would cost for 4 weeks at weight watchers. Before you committ yourself to Curves, you might want to check out your local YMCA. When my husband & I did some checking around, we found that the YMCA gave us the best value. For the price of a one year membershp at our local health clubs for one of us, our whole family could get a membershp at the YMCA. Most of them here in So Cal are 39.00 a month unless you commit to 2 years than it is 29 a month.

I go to one 'similar' to curves and enjoy it, especially since they added a recumbent bike and 2 heavy duty treadmills...Ü Just adds to my workout.

If you can afford it, it is a fun, relaxed, no stress place to work out.....

Does anyone belong to Curves? Do you like it? Does it give you enough

of a workout?

We live in a small town and don't have a lot of options for gyms. I

walk everyday but I need to do something in addition to walking.

I'm thinking about joining Curves and just wondered if anybody had any

experience or insight...

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks!

Hey Ruth,

I went to Curves for a while and it was OK. It got a little boring after the first few weeks. I did have one problem with Curves. After my daughter Amy and I were in a car accident-the Dr said we had to hold off on exercise during our treatment. I talked with the people at my local Curves and asked them if I could get out of my year contract. They said no. I was shocked that I had to keep paying for a Membership that I could not use. I think it is different with every franchise owner. Some will let you out if it you have a medical issue, others not. Just be very careful when you sign the contract. I will never go to a Curves again! I ended paying for 6 months of fees. What a waste of money!

I wish you the best! We love our local YMCA. They have everything from a pool, weights, treadmill, trainers, etc. You should see if you have a local one.

Hello Ruth,

I've been a dedicated CURVES member for 2 years and I love it. I went for 1 year prior to surgery and now one year since. Along with my 68 lb. weight loss, I've lost 68" and I'm not near as "flabby/loose" as I could have been. It really does help to keep you toned while giving you a great cardio workout. When I first started I could barely make my way around the circut the 2 times you're supposed to. Now I'm in and out in approx 20 minutes because I can power through. It's also a great place to make new friends who understand where you are (size wise) without having to tell them about your surgery. The club owner knows because I chose to tell her but the other members have no clue. Honestly, I think you'll like it. There are several of the same "types" of clubs here in the SF bay area where I live. One is called Stepping Stones and the other is Butterfly Lite. Curves is just closer and was the first in the area. Hope this helps.

IF you've never gone to a gym before or you have and don't like the

gym, guys and girls mixed together, then you might like curves.

I had to work out in a gym because of my job, it was a requirment to

be physically fit, so when I retired 6 years ago, I kind of let

everything go, but the one thing I didn't like was working out with

the guy. I'm not a prude or anything, but working out was a private

thing to me.

Now CURVES is all girls, the machines are in a circle with a space

between them, no one hogs machines because the music plays and a voice

has everyone move to the next machine at a certain point, very speedy

workout. The machines are not overly complicated and you don't have

to do any fiddling with weight or anything else. The only drawback

that I can see, is in about a year, if I keep it up, Curves wouldn't

be enought for me. I need to go to a regular gym and use the machines

where I could use the weight to increase the resistance.

Overall I think Curves is a good place to start. I do think they are

a bit pricy! Bally gym is doing a 19 down and 19 a month deal, if we

had one of those near us, I would have joined that.

With Curves you have to be 150 -30%, plus 45 a month, but that is

unlimited use, if you want I'll give you the 800 number it is

800-287-8373, and then they will give you choices of locations and

then you hit that button, and tell them you want the 30% off deal.

I just paid for one year and got to skip the 150 down and I got 13

months, I know I will use them for the next year, but after that I

will reconsider.

Hi ,

Thank you so much for all of the information. I really

do appreciate your input. Even with the 30% off it is

a little pricy for me right now...so I will have to

think about it. I don't have a Bally's near me in

Florida, however I had belonged to that club when I

lived in Illinois.

We do have a couple of other clubs in the area but I

was hoping to do a ladies only for a bit.

Thanks again for your input.

Hi Folks,

Ok, I've joined to curves (boring), 24 hour fitness, the local park and recs swimming/workout facility and a local upscale fitness club. This has been my observation of workout gyms: No one is watching you. Next time you go to the gym, watch other people to see if they are watching you. They are too busy worrying that someone is watching them to watch anyone else. Nobody watches anyone, but everyone thinks someone is watching them. It's actually quite comical. Also, with guys it's even worse. They are so caught up in thinking that because they are GUYS at the gym they have to pump a certain amount of iron. When you stop watching, start listening. All they ever talk about is how much they can pump.

When you start getting really into your workout, you actually won't see anyone. All you see is what you have to do next if you are trying to not focus on the pain and hell you are going through now.

ALso, not too many guys at all go to the classes, like yoga, and step, and aerbics ect. .

Hee, hee....I love your response. I think that you are

right. Actually I was hoping to join curves and then

go to a water workout place...Maybe I should just do

the water thing and protect my knees and still build

endurance. It would be cheaper.....
