Guest guest
Nina... It's not my stomach, it's my throat. I can't swallow well or easily. If I take a sip of something as soon as it hits the back of my mouth I can't get it to go down my throat. So yes, it's more like it is just sitting in my mouth. It's really hard to explain, the best I can explain is that my brain isn't telling my throat what to do. It's making me nutty! > Would you guys please offer some suggestions? Guest guest
Hi Mybipley, First welcome to the family!!! My friend Cathryn had this and I believe she had to sip very slowy teaspoons about half hour or so. Sometimes warm liquids [TEA, BROTH} Remember you can never gulp again or eat, drink or anything going into the mouth~has to be very slow going. Before banding we all just gulped and chewed a couple of times and then repeat~~~~NOMORE OF THAT.. Only clear liquids only for the first two weeks~you had major surgery and you have to heal~Please follow the bandster boot camp rules~VERYIMPORTANT~We are here for you. Please don't force anything and if this continues~Please call Nina. Hope this helps. Don't make your band mad~it always has the last word. Good Luck, Debmybipley <mybipley@...> wrote: Would you guys please offer some suggestions? I'm running out of ideas.I had surgery Wednesday 12/6/06. I am having a really hard time trying to swallow. Guest guest
Deb... HA! I like the part about the band having the last word. I hadn't thought of it that way. I have a cup of hot broth in front of me and it just isn't going down easily. My throat just isn't cooperating. I'm *really* thirsty too so I need to get this resolved. I am not a patient person. :o/ Do you recall how long this lasted with your friend? > Would you guys please offer some suggestions? I'm running out of ideas. > > I had surgery Wednesday 12/6/06. Guest guest
, I have never heard this I will talk to the doctor to see what his opinion is. We have had several patients that have a hard time with the passthrough but as you describe it this sounds different. I will tell you what works in their cases to see if it helps you. Sip very slowly. Warm liquids work best. Do not even try to drink early in the morning, start around 11:00 am and continue slowly from there. In the morning rinse your mouth, do not swallow the thick saliva. Patience is important sometimes they have as littel as 1 teasponn every 10 minutes ( with a watch in hand. Usually the swelling from surgery goes down within a few days and they are able to drinkmuch more. The secret is not irritating the stoma or passthrough any more than it is by vomiting by trying to force liquids down or having them too quickly. I hope this helps but if you see that is does not progress call me, it should get better not worse. Nina > > Would you guys please offer some suggestions? Guest guest
It could be your gag-reflux. A few years ago I had the flu so bad I couldn't even drink a sip of water and keep it down. The DR. suggested gatoraide and popsicles. Gatoraide turned out to be a real No No but the popsicles stayed down....why? because they do not hit the gag-reflux. Might want to try a lick or two. -- In , " mybipley " <mybipley@...> wrote: > > Would you guys please offer some suggestions? I'm running out of ideas. > > I had surgery Wednesday 12/6/06. Guest guest
Thanks for the info. I've decided that I am going to give it until Wednesday and if it isn't better by then I am going to try something thicker like plain mashed potatos. I'm have been following the diet to a " T " thus far and I had planned on continuing but at this point my mouth is dry, I have a headache, my skin is dry, I'm thirsty, I'm getting slightly dehydrated. I also have a low grade fever so I'm thinking this doesn't have anything to do with the band or the surgery, just coincidental. I just got back from the store. I got pop cycles. If this doesn't work I'm going to try thicker foods tomorrow. I just don't know what else to do. My problem isn't keeping it down, my problem is getting it down. > > > > Would you guys please offer some suggestions? I'm running out of > ideas. > > > > I had surgery Wednesday 12/6/06. Guest guest
Yes, I had the same problem and still do with many things--a year later! I found that water and sucking on ice cubes worked best for me. It did go away for the most part by the time I went on full liquids. Gulping does NOT work! I still can't drink Gatorade or many sweet flavored drinks including Fruit2O and Propel. I still like water, tea, and crystal light lemonade about the best. I like cream soups and hot fluids early in the day and then finally about 4- 5 PM I can start drinking cooler things and mayber even cold things by night. That's my story. Guest guest
Mybipley, Try holding a small amount of liquid in your mouth, tilting your chin down to your chest and then try to swallow. This technique is used by speech therapists and "maybe" will help, can't hurt right? Hope this all works it self-out soon! Guest guest
I found out what the problem was. Weird yet true! I called a friend who is an older retired anesthiologist and he explained it. Sometimes after surgery your body is awake but your whole body just doesn't know it. He said that everyone coming out of surgery cannot swallow. As they wake up they can within a short time. There are a handful of people who have weird things like mine throughout a doc's career and I was one of them. The cure? Bubble Gum. I know, weird. He said to chew a gumball and the chewing action and swallowing would fix the problem and I'll be darned, it sure did. I'm beginning to be a little odd in more ways than I care to acknowledge!
