Guest guest
First, its good that you are researching the different methods for weight loss. I had to lose over 140 pounds and I decided on the band because: 1. Only 30 minutes or less in surgery, 2. Stay in hospital for 1 or 2 days, 3. cost of surgery, 4. It can be adjusted (filled) based on each person’s needs, 5. Fast, easy recovery – back to work/activity immediately The bypass requires longer surgery, longer hospital stay, etc. and it costs a lot more. I chose Dr. A. in Mexico because of the cost and the ease of getting there (I live in Palm Springs, CA, which is a 2-hr drive). I have just been back there for my first fill and am very happy with the results so far. I recommend your reading ’s journey – its on this site under links (I think). I think Dr. A’s site talks about both the lap band and the bypass, so you can see the differences in either procedure. Good luck in your decision, and keep us posted on your choice. For about 4 yrs now i have been reading/researching the bypass and was sure that it was what i wanted. I had went to Dr. Woods here in michigan and he said that bypass would be " better " for me. I dont know if this was a money issue (insurance) for him since he did both or not. but then when i came across all of you i thought maybe the band is the safer choice. everyone is so happy with their bands. i will say that i need to lose about 140 pounds. Is that alot of weight to expect the band to work well with? does anyone here have a like to a bypass vs band site. i would really like to email back and forth with a few of you who have had bypass with Dr. A. I am so terrible at making choices... its seriously a problem for me so this is driving me nuts.... HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!! Guest guest
Hi Dawn, It's okay that you are being choosy about what surgery is right for you. This is your life and you have to take into consideration many factors about how you wish to spend the rest of your life in terms of weight loss. I suggest going to Obesityhelp.com, speaking with people both with lapband and RNY as well as here on the board. Now, there have been a few that have chosen to do the RNY over the band and they are just as happy. As for weight loss and the band, there are many successful stories here. I have lost over 180lbs with the band, but it's not always the case. There has been one member who has lost her band, but it was due to some complications outside of Dr. Aceves dealing with fills, however there are complications with RNY as well...so it's kinda a toss up, but for me...and speaking for myself, I chose the band over RNY cause I like the ability to control how much you want to lose in any given amount of time. I also like the fact that it was less evasive and had less complications in post-operatively. I have a couple of friends that have had the RNY, they love it! They are doing really well, and both have been post-op for over 3yrs now and the weight is still off of them. Continue to do your research, you have to choose what is right for you. Be honest with yourself and your eating habits, write down what you eat and the quantities, and compare how each surgery could help you with that issue. It took me almost 3 yrs before I had surgery because I wanted to make sure I was ready for a life change. First, you have to be ready to follow the specific rules for eating prior to surgery and most importantly POST OP DIET. First and foremost...these surgeries are just TOOLS, the success of your weightloss depends on YOU, and how you THINK of food. Be ready to accept change, that you cannot have junk food, that you will have to GIVE UP certain foods, and you will have to deal with the fact you can no longer graze yourself to a frenzy...if you are ready to accept those terms, then you'll be successful in weightloss...if not, then wait till you are...don't waste your time nor your money getting something that you'll just slough off during Post-op...as there have been some people that have gone right back to their old habits, then sit crying wondering why they are not losing weight. Whatever you decide to choose, make sure it's YOUR DECISION and not that of a doctor and/or family. You have to live with what you choose, not anyone else. With that, WELCOME TO THE BOARD...ask as many questions as you like. If you wish to contact me, or others like Jenni Currie, Mills, Dawnita, and others who have had the band for quite awhile...we will be upfront and honest with you...also speak to those that are just going through their post-op diet...it's like 8wks of specific foods you can eat...that will give you a really good idea of immediate change after surgery. Good Luck! Kelli 370/188/130 DOB: 1/27/06....isn't it amazing how a plastic band can bring so much joy to a person's life??? > > hi all, im still working on getting down to have the surgery. Guest guest
Hi Dawn I'm and will have the by pass with Dr A on Jan 10th. I too love the lap band but felt the by pass was better for me and my family history and my own personal history. One I have Interstitial Cystitis (IC) a bladder condition, I can not eat fruits, except pears and blueberries, I can't have salad dressings so why eat the dang salads. I can't have anyting acidic, and you just wouldn't believe how dang big that list is. I come from a very obese family, from my grandmother, to aunts, to about 60 cousins, I will be the 11th to have the gastric by pass, although many, many more need to be thinking about doing something! My decision was based on the lack of foods I've already had to give up, and the fact that it is more in line with a gastric by pass. I Feel I will have more success with it....long term. Although, I've had to give up a lot of food, you can sure over eat the things you can eat with IC. I felt the by pass would help be the most the first 2 years to deal with those restriction and make them a part of my life forever. I probably could have done the same with the lap band, I think it is great, and I'm working like the devil to talk two of my best friends into getting serious and doing the lap band, before I lose one of them to a heart attack or something else. There are so many pro and cons to each. here each person out, then decide on what you feel and think is best for you. Good luck with your decision and everyone here will be here to support it not matter what. hugs

Guest guest
Glad to meet you and when you are in the hospital on the 10th getting your test done, please ask them to show you where my room is so we can meet. Hopefully I will be up and walking. I'm 5'6 " with red hair that is to my shoulders, my husband is about 5'9 " and has white hair, I call him my white owl, he's like most men they always know it all, LOL Look me up before you go back to your hotel, I'm assuming they will get your test and then take you back to your hotel. We can walk each other up and down the halls, the onoe thing I've heard is the more you walk the better you do in the beginning. Also there are others coming in on the 11th and 12th for surgery don't know who they are yet, but maybe they are here and will speak up.
