Guest guest
Hi – I’m Rhonda – and I live in the Palm Springs area also (Desert Hot Springs) and am also in my 50’s. I was banded on 9/22/06. Follow the instructions you get when you get banded – 2 weeks on clear liquids, in week 3 you can ad yogurt, and fruit and week 4 add cream soups, oatmeal, etc. Week 5 add eggs, and week 6 add “pasta soup” and veggies. With the fruit and veggies, be sure they are soft (canned or blend them). Along with this, drink lots and lots of water. I just had my first fill (.9cc) about 2 weeks ago and am still trying to get used to it. I can eat more than just “2 or 3 bites”, but I can’t eat as much as before. I can also eat “anything” so far, as long as I take small bites and eat very slowly and chew, chew, and chew some more. I also enjoy eating out and have not had “too much” trouble with that. In fact, most of my friends don’t know I had this procedure and they haven’t noticed I’m eating any different than before, except I am selecting “healthier” meals when I eat out. I also work at home (computers) and was able to get back to work the next day after I came home. I just took it a little easier, remembered to walk every hour or so, and take more rest breaks than I normally do. Are you going to drive down to Mexicali? It’s an easy 2-hour drive and you can leave a day earlier from the hospital if you drive (or are driven). That’s what I did and I was able to come home the day after surgery, instead of 2 days. It’s also convenient when going for fills – I trust Dr. A and his staff – especially after reading some of the horror stories with fills. I saw that e is in this area too – maybe we all can get together to share our experiences. I know you won’t have any problems – don’t worry. Let us know how your journey goes. I keep wanting to put it off, a week, a month, 3 months. I keep thinking " well, maybe there is a way to do this without this surgery " . Of course, in 45 years I haven't been able to do it. I'm pretty confused about a number of things. When I met with the doctor, he said 10 days on clear liguids, 10 days yogurts type foods, 10 days of creamed soups, mushy foods, etc. I'm seeing however two weeks for each of these phases in the instructions. Also, I had understood that I would be able to eat between 1-1 1/2 cups of food at a meal. Some of you are claiming 2-3 bites. I am more than willing at this point to eat a whole lot less. But I'm not willing to give up almost all food altogether. I love fine foods and fine dining. I'd love to know a bit more from some of you. (I am a female in my 50's, in the low 200's with about 85-95 lbs to lose.) Also, I'm in the midst of a pretty large project, and planning to be back to work within 4-5 days of the surgery (I work at home). Am I being foolish or over optimisitc? Also, I live in the Palm Springs, CA area. I saw a post from e , who lives in my area and was just recently banded. e, if you're out there - maybe we could be of some support to each other? Guest guest
Hello Ms Joy: How much you are able to eat is largly dependent on you "plumbing" as for going back to work I had surgery on Friday and was moving all over the place with-in hours of surgery. All of us having surgery the same day went to a local mall on Saturday and I was back to work on Monday. I had very little pain...more mental than physical. The only thing that is very uncomfortable is the gas pain that you MAY get in your right shoulder, mine lasted for about a week. I know its easy to say, but dont stress it it not a big deal Ken msjoyj <msjoyj@...> wrote: My date is coming up in about a week and I'm really nervous. Guest guest
You will find everyone has their preferences on how tight they like their band to be. Me? I like to eat. If you click here http://tracyslapband.com/eating.html and then click on “what does eat?” you will see a picture of a normal dinner portion for me. I hope to add more later of normal breakfast and lunch. I am considered to have a “tight” band by my fill doctor (Dr. , Grandprairie, Tx). Yet I can still eat a bowl of oatmeal in the morning, or an egg and some toast. But I usually have a protein drink because I am always in a hurry in the morning and it is easier to drink my protein drink on the way to work. For lunch I can have 3 oz of tuna and 5 crackers, or 1 cup of noodles. Dinner can be one small pork chop, some veggies, and mac and cheese (see photo on web site). If I snack, it is usually popcorn. I think I would seriously worry if all I could eat were a few bites of something by dinner time. Heck, I would probably be in panic mode because food is still important to me, no matter how hard I deny it. I don’t think about it as much, but I sure as heck would if I couldn’t have any! Good luck with your up and coming surgery. I am sure Nina will clear up any questions you have about the post op diet and any changes. I am not aware of any changes, but it has been awhile and I have been out of the loop. Guest guest
Hi, The first few weeks feels like you are going to give up food but you won't. The period that you spend on liquids may seem like hell, but it's to allow your stomach to heal from the surgery. I have to admit, I hate the liquid stage even when I get fills...no one likes it! But, stick to the program and it will allow you to heal properly...it's not to torture anyone it's just trying to be safe. Some may have continual hunger, where they feel they are not getting enough to eat...this is normal. Your stomach will feel that your throat has been cut and why are you doing this to me. I was told you can drink the liquids throughout the day, to help fill the hunger...it may or may not work, but do stick it out as best as you can. You may hear some people jumping ahead of the program, they may decide to start eating solids early and nothing happens...well, the point of it is this, if you can't stick to something for 8wks how are you going to stick with the program the rest of your life?? Kinda a test in your commitment to wanting to lose weight. This is a life altering moment, and if you are truly committed to working with this band then these first several weeks will be the test. Change in eating habits begins then, there will be some foods that you will not be able to tolerate...everyone is different!!! Some can have breads, some cannot...others can eat meats, some cannot. You have to allow yourself to experience it for yourself...just be safe. Eventually, you'll gradually work your way back to eating solids...just not as much as you used to do, if all goes well. Some folks may need several fills before they hit a " sweet spot " or restriction. Remember, everyone is different, everyone loses at a different rate but it's not a race it's not I'm losing more than you attitude, it's I'm losing weight at a safe rate for my body. Getting the band is a learning experience, once banded you experience one thing and then as you get filled the experiences can change. I love to eat, but I know what I can have or not have, for me...and strictly this is not some promotion of my diet...but what works for me, is a very strict diet. Yes, I said " Diet " cause I am like an alcoholic, I know that once anything sweet hits my mouth I cannot control it...so I avoid it. I have not had any cookies, cakes, candies (a few SF candies only), no soda, hardly no cheese or dairy (lactose intolerate), basically I avoid as much sugar as possible. I eat protein first, veggies and fruits and nuts...my fruit is my dessert. Oh, one thing that keeps me sane...is Cool Whip Lite!!!! I think I'd like to dive into a huge pool of CWL!!! It has very very low sugar like 1g per serving, I put it on my fruits and Yum-O!!! My diet I don't tell other to do because it's simply very difficult...it works for me, cause I really have a problem with food...as you see my photos you can tell that I did (370lbs). Others can control what they eat, and can have small amounts of cake, cookies or candies without going overboard...I wish I could be like them...but I am not. For you, it could be entirely different...you'll have to experience it for yourself. Basically, get your protein in however you can get it in and then your veggies...you'll do fine. It may take some time before you see a change on the scale, I suggest getting your measurements these tell a better sign you're losing weight than the scale. Go by your clothes as well, you'll see your sizes starting to drop. Don't fret if you feel you are a slow loser, all is not lost. I hope this answers some of your questions. One thing to consider about going back to work, some people experience alot of pain coming out of surgery and others do not. Depending on your project, if it's physical I'd consult with Dr. A before tackling something that can hurt you. I know for me, I did okay after surgery but then got alittle head of myself and started to do too much housework and boy, did I feel it. So, just be careful with what you do...take care of yourself. Good Luck! Kelli > > My date is coming up in about a week and I'm really nervous. I keep > wanting to put it off, a week, a month, 3 months.
