Guest guest
Dear mibipley, I am sorry to hear about your swallowing difficulties. Deb wrote that I had some problems awhile back. My problems came after I had some swelling. When I was having difficulty getting things down, the only thing that helped me was drinking herbal teas (as hot as pobssible) by the teaspoon. Any amount more than a teaspoon would not go down. So when you hear small sips, that is exactly what folks mean. I also found that I had the best luck with chamomile tea. Please take care to get enough fluids in 12-15 ounces isn't enough. It might be okay for a day or two, but any longer than that you really risk getting dehydrated. Dehydration can become a medical emergency. I almost forgot, when I had my swallowing challenges, I also set a kitchen timer for every 10 minutes. That way I was reminded to get a teaspoon or two every 10 minutes. Please be careful. I would encourage you to treat getting your fluids in as you job until this problem passes. But it will pass. Hot, clear liquids only. I would also avoid salty liquids and any artificially sweetened liquids. That's my advice, and that what worked for me (although it wasn't easy). Be patient and go easy on yourself. You will know you are getting dehydrated if you stop urinating. Good luck, Cathryn Want to start your own business? Learn how on Small Business. Guest guest
Cathryn... Thanks for the info. Can you tell me where your inflammation was? Throat? Stoma? I don't care for tea, but I did try hot broth. I'm not seeing a difference yet. I'll give it until Wednesday and then I'll figure out something. I am a nurse so I already know the signs of dehydration and I know it is beginning to be an issue. Certainly nothing serious, but I just have to deal with this. Regarding another of your posts.. I used to teach nursing school too!! It was fun in some ways, but... NEVER AGAIN! ;o) I'm better with patients. > > Dear mibipley, > > I am sorry to hear about your swallowing difficulties. > > Deb wrote that I had some problems awhile back. Guest guest
My swelling was at my stoma, however, until you are familiar with you modified anatomy, you may be surprised to lear exactly where you stoma is. I found that it feels higher than I had anticipated. I also know the feeling of having something stuck at the back of your throat. When my stoma was irritated, I stayed on hot liquids only for nearly two weeks. Once I got back to see Dr. A, and had my band checked with fluro, I progressed on to full liquids and mushies. As Nina told me during that time, the trick is to avoid irritating your stoma any further. So what worked for me was only hot, clear liquids. I stayed off of all sweet and salty things and did herbal teas only. After about 4-5 days when I was getting headaches and was some what lite headed, I began drinking my herbal teas with some sugar for the calories. Good luck, and take it easy.
