Regards/ Jerome facial nerve damage Maybe I can help Jerome and others with this. My surgeon explained there is a machine that has a wire attached to the facial nerve. Any contact with the nerve causes the graph to go crazy(like a lie detector) and the surgeon has on an ear bub that allows him to hear an alert a mili-second before the graph moves...he touches the nerve and immediately knows where it is and then it is tagged so he can also see it. He also said this was developed because years ago all patients undergoing mastoid surgery had facial nerve damage from mild to extremely severe.
