Guest guest
Yes, my little Annika was at Aware Fair. It was basically information overload for her but it was good for her to go. Once we were in the crowds she did not complain once of sitting in her stroller(when we first arrived and hadn't made it to where the displays were she through a little fit about riding in the stroller, yes that little sweet smile can turn on you:))))). Two things were neat for me to see from her(well and it was neat to finally meet Dora and Kathy). At times it was hard for me to watch people because there were some that really avoided us because of her CI's. That I find unfortunate. I don't shy from those that sign or cue I have total respect for their choice. Anyway the two things that were neat. A gal from the Deaf/HOH services has been really close to us for the past two years was there running the whole show(well not only her but she was busy) so we stopped to say Hi. Well, has a moderate hearing loss herself and wears hearing aids, she knows sign and can speak very well. So decided to put her through a little battery of her receptive skills. Annika scored 100% even in the crowd and even though 's speech is not perfectly clear(but then whose is???). Then a gal who was blind walked up to us, she is a college student and she was doing a research paper on why families/people chose a CI for their child or themselves. Just because they are really getting into how the deaf culture is not totally accepting of them. So she asked if we minded telling her why we implanted Annika. I will tell anyone this so I didn't mind sharing. We basically implanted Annika because she refused to sign and only wanted to speak so to give her the best access to this would be an implant. She was so amazed she had never heard of a child refusing to sign. I know that there are more out there but this was a reason that she had never heard of so this will definitely be brought up in her paper. It was just neat talking to her. She asked to feel Annika's processors and stuff like that and Annika allowed her to do this. It was kind of neat. My husband, on the other hand did not like the Aware Fair. Too many people for him. I will take him back next year and then I will expect him to look at things more then. This year we just basically walked by every booth unless we knew someone there to talk to. I really wanted to look at everything. I just have to always ease him into this. He is only like this if he feels like he is out of place. Then crowds drive him nuts!!!! Good to meet you Dora and Kathy. It would have been good to talk more but our time was limited there since I had to get back home for work. Guest guest
Yeah I notice that in minnesota which there is a strong bond in deaf community, I planned to go to deaf aware fair but I was so busy that day. I feel that many deaf have fear of CI is because of what others are thinking and probally would put them down and stuff.. I'm kinda afraid but this is what I want to get and I had told some friends about it some accepts my option and my wants but some disagree, however I ended up letting them think that way. I started to get instering in CI after my son was born 2 years ago while the interpreter tells me what my son is saying like " oooo " " uh-oh " I just wish I could hear that. Also I meet a friend from green bay, WI (no I'm not a packer fan) who had CI and learn a lot from her. > Hi > It isn't often that i see a candidate from Mn post on a forum.I do know that there are many deaf and hearing impaired as I attended the Deaf Aware Fair in Brookklyn Park,Mn. on Saturday. Most of the people who I chatted with have a fear of the CI..I hope I was able to take that fear from them.I also chatted with several who have the CI....some little ones who I hadn't seen for 3years and who now are mainstreamed into public school. And oh,yes....I met ANNIKA ..she IS a sweetheart. Her smile lit up the mall! She was the center of attention!! > > > Dora Weber > Nucleus Volunteer Advocate > dora_weber@m... > > Bilateral > N22-96 > N24C-01 > Cochlear Otosclerosis > > >

But I do remember how wonderful it was to hear my daughter say all those things for the first time thanks to the technology of the CI. When we first were told that our daughter was now deaf we just went through that whole grieving process of what we wouldn't be able to hear from her. Well, that is certainly not the case anymore!!! She will tell her brothers, " bye, bye brothers " now every morning when we drop them off at the bus stop. And we wave bye, bye and holler at the bus as we drive past it. These are the moments that I will treasure forever. Annika's mom
