Guest guest
Hi Jackie, We thought about that too but no, he has been loud from day 1, he wants everyone to notice him. Also, he has spent a lot of time at the airport hanger and he would have to yell sometimes to be heard over the noise around there. He is a sweetheart and everyone loves to have him around, even when he does get real loud. His cousin, Kipp, lives with us and he is a very quiet 11 yr. old but he misses Jake when he doesn't visit us. One of these days Jake will get too quiet and we will then need to worry about him.....BG Kristoffer is adopted and we knew he might have a hearing problem one day, so daughter had him checked out by school and can you believe what they said...........all his hearing and speech problems are because I am hearing impaired and have cared for him most of his life while his mom works as a teacher. We were shocked at that report, how could I have cause any of his problems, I had raised 6 kids, not one has a speech or hearing problem, they either finished college or are still taking some classes at college, and all are doing well in the jobs they have. Needless to say, we were not happy with that woman's report to the school and they knew it. Even my doctors couldn't believe it. I guess she needed someone to blame and I was the most handy one around. Selma Re: Dental work/Selma/Patti Hi, Everyone, I had some dental work done shortly after I had my CI put in. I had caps and overlays, and the usual cleaning. I called my surgeon, my audi and Cochlear. All said antibiotics would not be necessary. My dentist had no quelms whatsoever about treating me. My CI is on the right ear, so I usually remove the processor just so I'm not laying on it as I turn my head in the chair to be worked on. Also, my husband had a triple by-pass last summer and his doctor and our dentist both said he didn't need antibiotics for his usual check-up with cleaning. Perhaps for more extensive work he would. (HA! if I could just get him to agree to do that extra work! He announces himself to the dental staff as " Chicken Little " ! LOL) Selma - nice to meet you! What a thrill for you to hear again. You mentioned your grandson Jake a few times as being a loud little 6 year old. Does he do this because he is aware Grandma needs him to raise his voice? If not, just a suggestion, please have his hearing checked. Loud voices are often the first sign that a child could be having a hearing problem. Alice? ? My friend's newborn grandson ( just a few weeks old now) was tested for hearing and the first test showed one ear deaf, but second test showed it was fine. Is there a good hearing center anywhere near Montrose, Colorado, that I could refer them to for a definative hearing evaluation? Thanks for any info! Kat - good luck!!! Dont be nervous - Just plan how you want to be catered to for a few weeks and make sure everyone knows the plan! LOL Patti - hang in there! My hook-up was awful, too! I kept saying to my husband, how can the audiologist let me go home hearing like this???? It's 7 months for me now, and things are getting better. I am lipreading much better, but to understand speech I am still wearing my hearing aid in my unimplanted ear. I've noticed just recently that my hearing aid is helping less and less, but I can't do without it yet. I also noticed that without my CI processor, and JUST my hearing aid - I am not happy with the little hearing I get anymore. I need both. I count this as progress. I am receiving A/V therapy once a week and feel it is helping me. My therapist sees subtle, but definate improvement. I'm just not one of those first day, turn-on miracles. So I keep plugging along and staying with this forum and others where people are supportive and encouraging. I hope you will, too! Feel free to vent, ask questions, or describe some new sound you've heard! ) Jackie Activated Nov.5,2002
Guest guest
Hi Selma, That story about your the adopted son reminded me of what went on when my youngest daughter was in school. got a note from the teacher and learned that my daughter knew all the answers when called upon however, she never used her voice and expected everyone to understand her. Seems when she spoke with me she never used her voice and I was always lip-reading her. So from then on I made it a point for her to use her voice in school and at home to make sure she did that I placed my hand on her neck to feel her voice vibrations and finally got her to use her voice. Yet to this day when visiting her out west she still does not use her voice but sine wearing the CI she has to use her voice. Kids have a way with us. Guest guest
Hi , I had that problem with my #2 daughter until she was 3 yrs. old.she would not talk in sentenses, she would make monkey montions with her mouth or her head, only my oldest daughter, who was 14 months older, knew what she wanted. We finallly had to tell dau #1 to let her younger sister try to talk, none of us would do anything for her until the day she told us what she wanted. Now this dau is a mechanical engineer in aviation and doing great. Like the other kids, she got to the point where she didn't know when to shut up.......Selma Re: Re: Dental work/Selma/Patti > Hi Jackie, > > We thought about that too but no, he has been loud from day 1, he wants everyone to notice him. Guest guest
Hi Selma . That is really great and mine went on to major in Chemistry and Biology and at present is a Bio-Technician and is going for her Masters in Business Administration. She has been doing great too. We are proud of our kids are we not???? She was my #2 daughter. I do have three sons and another daughter. Funny though when they were in school as well as college they never told their friend I was deaf , I guess we all got by with lip-reading.. Got to go, our neighborhood picnic today. Guest guest
Selma, That's a very comforting reply. Both of my sons (9 year old twins) take speech therapy at school because they have trouble with the " r " sound. I was quite concerned that the problem might have stemmed from my own speech (people often wonder what country I'm from when they hear my " deaf accent " ). I thought they might have picked up the problem from me, since obviously, they hear me so much (I was going to say listen to me so much, but I wonder how often they actually listen LOL!). The speech teachers didn't think that would cause the problem. Thanks for sharing your experience--eases my mind. Guest guest
, My youngest grandson, Jake, also has a speech problem and no one knows why, sure isn't from me as he doesn't listen to me. He is doing better in school but it is going to be a long time before he talks normal. He is going to his other grandmother in Montana this summer, a teacher, who is going to work with him, hopeful she can make some improvements. Right now, Jake doesn't seem to mind the way he talks, but that may change in 2nd grade. He loves to tease and can take his share of teasing, without getting mad. He can tell you who the driver is of different race cares and know the make of the race cares. He also can tell you the names of many different aircrafts that he sees at the airport, he listens to what he ils interested in and can remember it all. His mom was like that, when she was 2 1/2 yrs. old, she was answering the phone for me and writing down phone numbers and names, altho not in the correct order, we had to figure out what she put down. I'll bet your twins are very smart too....... Re: Re: Dental work/Selma/Patti Hi Jackie, We thought about that too but no, he has been loud from day 1, he wants everyone to notice him.
