HI!! WEll Im not a Dr but I can tell from experience at first it was painful and tiring. I guess for being slugish for a long time thats normal. I feel the more I stretch.. eat better.. lubricate my joint with water intake it gets better. even addictive. Frommy experience I think its normal and will get better with training and WEIGHT LOSS. I think good support for ur feet is crucial. I prefer Nike's and Kohls always have good selections. GOOD LUCK AND congrats on all that jogging and walking WOOOHOOOOOpeninsulahair <peninsulahair@...> wrote: K,

Your body tells you what you can do, listen to it!! Jogging is not good at for your skeletal health, this is well documented. Even healthy weight, young and fit runners develop problems with their knees, hips and heels. My 24 year old nymph of a daughter (5'10 " , 130 lbs) developed a hairline crack in her tibia, because of all the pounding that the body gets during jogging. Instaed stick to low impact exercises, like fast walking in good walking shoes, cycling, water walking, swimming and weight machines. We do not have the bodies of teenagers, let's not try to act like them. I know I sound harsh, but we have to be realistic.

Kindest regards,

Margaret

, Shoes, believe it or not, are of vital importance ESPECIALLY if you are experiencing pain. You need to find out what sort of shoes you need for running. Do you have a running specialty store in your area? Preferably one that sells shoes of all brands, not just one particular type. What I did was go to the running guru here that sells shoes to EVERYONE who is a runner. I told him I was considering picking up the sport but wasn't sure yet. (Ok, integrity just flew out the window, ok???) Anyway, I got him to fit me in shoes and explain the type I needed and why. Then, I told him that I wasn't sure I wanted to invest the money right then so I wanted to think about it for a couple of days. Then, I went to a large sporting goods department type store and bought the same kind for much less $. I know, I know.....it wasn't nice but, hey, after spending nearly $8,000.00 on a

lapband, who has money to throw around on shoes, right??? lol But, to answer your question, shoes are about the most important thing for running. I had knee problems until I got the right shoes. My youngest son has serious problems with his knees and his hips unless he has the right shoes. Anyway, do some research and find out what you need. Joint problems. Aren't they fun??? I have fibromyalgia and arthritis so I know where you are coming from with the joint pain. My pain is also centered in my hips as well as shoulders, elbows, and hands. BUT, I must say, running seems to have actually helped the situation! I don't hurt nearly as bad since my body has grown accustomed to high impact exercise. HOWEVER, this may not happen for everyone. You know, running is extrememly hard on your joints. It is constant pounding that some bodies just can't handle and that is

OK! I know you want to run....I understand that desire, believe me! But, you may not be a candidate for running. There are plenty of other things to give you the same results that aren't nearly as harsh on your body. Have you thought about swimming? You can swim much further than you can run I would imagine so, therefore, you would burn twice as many calories with NO PAIN! Stretching out before running is very important. Stretch those areas where you feel pain even more. Cross your legs and bend over at the waist to help stretch your hip joints. Make sure you do all of your stretches slowly and stretch out for at least 10 minutes to get your joints a little looser. Then, like you are already doing, walk first. As you walk, increase your speed, until you are slowly creeping up to a run. Run only for SHORT intervals...maybe even 30 second intervals to start with.

Walk for 3 minutes, run for 30 seconds...walk for 3 mins, run for 30 secs. Don't rush into increasing your running time. The best thing to do when working with intervals is to decrease your running speed and increase your walking speed. Do this for WEEKS....don't rush it! Slowly increase your interval time to, say, 45 seconds running and 2.5 minutes walking. Give it a few weeks or months and just see how your body adjusts. DO NOT run every day! This will really create problems! Maybe 3 times a week...Do other stuff on those in-between days. , you are doing such a phenomenal job with your journey. Don't feel like you always have to grab onto yet another idea! Keep doing what you are doing! Yeah, spice it up a bit every now and then but don't kill yourself doing it! If running causes you too much pain it isn't worth it. I was running 7 days a week, 3

miles a day. I decided that I really DON'T have to do that! It was getting to where I was no longer enjoying it. Yeah, the pounds were falling off like crazy but it was killing me! The enjoyment was gone! Now, I run 3 days a week for maybe two miles at the most. I enjoy it, I run slowly, I take in the scenery, I smell the flowers, I listen to the leaves crunch. I won't win any marathons this way but WHO CARES! Like my favorite running shirt says, It isn't a miracle that I crossed the finish line, it is a miracle that I had the courage to start! I don't run fast, far, or long, but I AM A RUNNER! Let me know what you decide about the shoes and so forth! You know, Margaret, just because some of us enjoy running doesn't necessarily mean we are trying to act like teenagers. Running is more than a sport...it can almost become a philosophy. It is simplistic, quiet, peaceful, and gives one a sense of freedom like nothing else. It has put me in tune with my body. I feel my body working with each step I take. Swimming does the same thing. When I want a more upbeat, musically enhanced workout, I run. When I need the quiet solitude after a long day in the classroom, I swim. My body told me early on that running was not for me. But, at the same time, it told me that swimming, lifting weights, walking, playing basketball, racquetball, tennis, riding a bicycle....none of this was for me. I chose to ignore some of my body's protests and I persevered and got my body to a point where I CAN do these things. I can do these things at 44 years old and I am not trying to

act years younger. I'm just free from the chains that kept my feet planted firmly on the ground for too many years to count. Peace, JenniMargaret Nemet <margaret.nemet@...> wrote: , Your body tells you what you can do, listen to it!! Jogging is not good at for your skeletal health, this is well documented. ...I hate running, I do it because it works and it's effective but I hate it. I am also having knee problems that I know are getting worse because of running so I'm backing off a bit and doing more power walking again.

Thing is, if you have joint damage from arthritis, excess weight, whatever... if you are running you could worsen existing damage. If I were you I would find out if it is tendonitis, joint damage, or whatever the problem is before pushing too hard. If you are going to run do a great plateau breaker, power walk for 4.5 minutes and run for 30 seconds, power walk for 4.5 minutes, run for 30 seconds, etc. If you are going to run at least make it a bit easier on your joints.Honestly, I'd get it diagnosed before pushing too hard. If you have joint deterioration of any kind you could speed up the damage if you aren't careful. Just get an xray, that will tell quite a bit. If it is tendonitis that is usually easily treatable. But you need to find out the exact cause of the pain before you do anything that makes it worse.

Do you have pain in the AMs when you first wake up? If you have been sitting for a while and then stand, do you notice extra pain until you have walked five feet or so? Does weather make a difference such as hot vs. cold, dry vs. humid? Or do you only have pain when/after running?

Hey gals. Thanks so much for your impute about this. :-) Jenni, I

think you said it so well!! You put into words something I Really

have felt but didnt know how to say. It is so freeing for someone

who was once 342 + pounds and has never really had any stamina in her

life to be able to get out there and do something like run. When you

are that large it is a challenge just to walk, let alone try

something like running. So, I think when your body changes and you

are fit and in shape for the first time in your life, you want to

push yourself in new ways, challenge yourself and see what you are

capable of doing. There is a freedom and a simplicity to it! :-) IT

is pretty amazing to me! I get a complete and utter rush from it, it

takes me to a level nothing else has yet. But I am doing the

interval training. so I only run in spurts of like 2 minutes 3 max

and then I walk for 2 or 3 minutes. so it is not a constant running

all the time. My body isnt ready for that at all! I know the

slimmer I get the less impact it will be. I do want to try swimming

too. Because a new YMCA just opened in our area and they have great

pool facilities. I am thinking about joining that later in the

winter if it just gets to cold and miserable to run outside. I am

also going to try to mix it up and cycle a little too.

and hey Margaret I may not be a teenager, but I feel like one!!! :-)

(well except for the joints. lol) But in every other aspect I am so

much more alive then I have ever been in my entire life, even when I

was a teenager!! :-) Plus I am still young, shoot I am in my 30's.

I am just a babe!!! lol lol :-) I think it is better to be my age

and be a teenager!! lol cuz now I have money and means to do

whatever my heart desires, plus I dont have my mom telling me what to

do. hee hee :-) well she tries, but I dont have to listen unless I

want to. ;-)

thanks again ladies for you impute. I really appreciate it! :-)

have a great day!!!

For anyone interested in running/walking/jogging, I highly reccomend this site: http://coolrunning.com/ It has a ton of info as well as a great "Couch to 5k" program for those just starting out. It starts you with jogging intervals of 30 seconds and works you up to a 5k run. peninsulahair <peninsulahair@...> wrote: Hey gals.
