Guest guest
Quick question....... I am 3 years out. I only had a 2 foot bypass. From time to time I get a little light headed, almost like a dizzy feeling. I always feel the need to eat somethingwhen this happens. I usually carry something salty with me since that is what I was told to do in the beginning. Within a minute of eating something, the dizzy feeling always passes. I get these symptoms once about every 2 weeks. However, today it happened while I was driving, and it just so happened that I I had my diabetic mother in law with me. I asked her to check my blood. It was a 52 !!! She imediately gave me 5 pieces of small gum drop candy and the feeling did go away. Any body else out there with this issue? All of my blood work has been great with the exception of low iron, and B-12 from time to time. Thanks so much DT _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live™ Hotmail®: Chat. Store. Share. Guest guest
When I had those symptoms you mentioned it was from low anemia and b-12. Go to the doctors. Guest guest
Hi, Yes, this has happened to me (and my sister-in-law) since having wls. I have to be VERY careful of what I eat, or especially what I drink--and in what order. The first time it happened, I had eaten 1/2 tuna sandwich (tons of protein). Then I drank some lemonade. My glucose was 275 when I started feeling symptomatic--right after the lemonade. But within 20 minutes it was 35! With our new plumbing, our bodies absorb simple carbohydrates MUCH faster than complex carbs or protein, as they don't have to be broken down as much. With the massive influx of sugar, the body produces insulin (I think sometimes overreacting & producing too much) which starts bringing the blood glucose down--before the protein & complex carbs have had a chance to be absorbed/broken down. For me, it is the rapid drop in blood glucose that makes me symptomatic. My advice would be carry some form of simple sugar--but don't go overboard! 4 oz of oj at most. One glucose tab. If you drink a big glass of oj, it will just continue the cycle. Protein shakes are a good follow-up--as they are absorbed more quickly than say a tuna sandwich. You have to follow the simple carb (that will initially bring up your sugar & make you feel better) with protein, as it will sustain your glucose & not initiate the insulin production that the carbs will. Be careful, you could black out before you have time to react if your glucose drops too quickly. My worst episode, I did black out. Thankfully, I could feel it coming, swerved to the shoulder of the road & told my 8 year old children that I would be ok--right before blacking out. You also need to share with those around you that you have hypoglycemic episodes (they don't have to know why), so people know how to react if need be. My kids now know where my glucometer is (which you can get for free from most endocrinologists--they're freebies from the manufacturer) & what they should do if it happens. There is no easy fix for the problem--only diet control. No sweets, or you're risking it happening. Good luck! Guest guest
I have also had these symptoms of low blood sugar- sometimes to the extreme of disorientation and major sweating. I only seem to get it about an hour after eating- and only at certain times. I had my blood checked and it was normal- my doctor did say there were other tests that could be done, but that I should just be prepared. I carry glucose tablets with me and I take one when I start getting that weird feeling in my head, or sometimes just feel tired. Because I am aware of the symptoms I take action as soon as they appear and I have avoided the major symptoms of sweating and disorientation. Someone actually posted an article on this board a while back about the connection between low blood sugar and gastric bypass. Look for patterns and be prepared- also talk to your doctor to make sure you are treating it properly @...: TreeBee123@...: Tue, 13 Jan 2009 14:18:36 -0500Subject: Re: low blood sugar When I had those symptoms you mentioned it was from low anemia and b-12. Guest guest
Those can also be symptoms of dehydration. Are you drinking enough water? Arnett Dr. P 2/23/07 318/
