Guest guest
Nadine, I have heard of the ports moving. I have actually heard of them flipping over. I have worried about my port coming disconnected because of all the physical stuff that I do. Jenni has had to have a port replacement. she had a bad fill and the doctor who filled her damaged her port pretty badly. so she had to have it removed and was actually portless for awhile. she now has her new port and is doing great. But she had lost almost all her weight when this happened to her. She is a pretty amazing person! she has shared her experience with us and she is a great source of information and encouragement. :-) hope all goes well, keep us posted! take care, > > Hi guys, > Have anyone of you had a port revision surgery? Guest guest
Hi Nadine, I have had port revision surgery. I had my damaged port removed last March and then had a new one put in this past June. Having the new one put in was a piece of cake....I was asleep. Removing the old one wasn't quite as easy. I told Dr. Aceves that he really should offer some sort of sedative before doing that procedure! There was no pain involved but it was just a very strange sensation and I could not relax AT ALL! I felt like I had just run a marathon when they finished. Campos was on my right, Aceves on my left, Lucy at my feet, and dear, dear was at my head holding my hands and stroking my face! What a team, huh???? They are awesome! Shirley , another of Dr. Aceves' patients, had her port removed and replaced all in one procedure. Is that what you are doing? It won't be bad that way....not much to it. I have two seperate scars but I don't know if she does or not. You are having this done on Friday or Saturday of this next week? I will be there Friday. I am having a fill done then. Maybe we will be there at the same time. When will you head back to San Diego after your surgery? I fly home Sunday the 14th. I always make a mini-vacation out of it! I'm hoping to do a little Christmas shopping while out there. Guest guest
Hi Jenni, From what I understand what I am having done Saturday is pretty simple procedure, where they re-attach my port. My fill doctor here would also like it moved up a bit higher so I may mention that to Dr. A as well. I think they will put me out with a local anethetic. So luckily it nothing like all that you have gone through. Though I am curious if I have to follow the same directions as for the first surgery with no lifting of anything more 10lbs etc. I am also wondering if that means no water aerobics for a few weeks. I never thought in my wildest dreams I would miss exercising! Yes, I fly in on Friday the 12th and leave on Sunday the 13th. It would be great to meet you and (Bipley) too! I am really looking forward to chatting with people just about to get the band and tell them they are making the best decision of their lives and they won't regret it! I am also excited about getting a fill from Dr. A's team; I wonder if that will happen though during the surgery. See ya later this week! Guest guest
Hi, - I'm afraid this isn't too uncommon. Think about it - the fill people are trying to hit a dime-sized target in the middle, blind, down 4-6 inches under fat, and only by " feel " . It's pretty amazing to me that there are not more accidental punctures. But i know it's frustrating - I also needed a port replacement. It's a quick and easy repair under local anesthesia. However, I'd suggest also asking for some IV sedation, like Versed, too. There is a lot of scar tissue formed around the port and tubing that has to be freed, and it can take some tugging and a bit of cutting. It just feels weird and uncomfortable, even if you're very numb. i was glad I had some Versed, and didn't remember a thing, but woke up immediately. You can also get a small first fill right then, to get you going. Then further small monthly fills until you're at a good level again. I'm afraid we can't just jump right back to any previous fill level, becuase " good " is likely to be totally differeent this time, and you'll need to creep up slowly again. You'll be back ontrack soon. Sure sorry this happened, but - in the whole scheme of things - really is just a temporary glitch. Guest guest
That is something I was wondering about...if my restriction will be different now vs before the leak was discovered. The last time the port was accessed (about 3-4 weeks ago)it was under flouro and there was no problem. He took all my fill out and put it back in. Before this time, I felt I didn't have much restriction so I hope this will make a difference.. Wasn't until this past Friday that nothing came out. Doc says the band company says there is no such thing as a " slow leak " so it all seems kind odd...if this happened by being nicked during a fill it seems like it would have started to leak sooner. Guess I need to not worry about that...what's done is done. Hopefully this will all take place next week and I can get back on the horse with this and move forward. thanks for the feedback. > > Hi, - I'm afraid this isn't too uncommon. Well, think of a tire on your car going bad....sometimes it is very slow, like days. Other times it'll leak within a day. Somtimes it is a blowout. To me they're pretty similar. > Guess I need to not worry about that...what's done is done. Right. Guest guest
, Any time the band is unfiulled, or looses fill, scar tissue fills in a bit. most people require less fill the " second time around " than they did at first. The stomach also changes shape a bit with unfills. All THis is why we have to creep up even more slowly with fills after a port replacement. There surely is such a thing as a slow leak. a good friend lost restriction very slowly after every fill and felt she had a leak. The leak was so small ans slow that it took like 5-6 (I forget exactly how many) daily fluoros until the very experienced doc saw the very slow leak on fluoro. She got the port replacement, and has continued on , doing great. One can puncture the tubing with the whole needle, or just make a tiny nick that leaks slowly. One can also nick the side of the port and cause a small leak there. Also, just so you know, the general guideline for suspecting and testing for a leak is: More than 0.5-1 cc missing from a known fill level, 3 or more fills in a row. One eposiode of less fill would not lead most docs to suspect a leak, as it's common to have some " missing. " It often means the port was missed altogether and the fill injected harmlessly into the tissues. Good luck with all this - let us know how you are. Great, I hope! Guest guest
Thanks for all the info. My revision is scheduled for this coming Thursday. I am a big believer in everything happens for a reason. I have never had good restriction even before this leak... that's why I was going in each month for fills. Hopefully, this time my restricion will be different. I thought I knew so much about my band...did so much research and preparing but as I read here and all the info in the files, there is just so much more to know and learn. I will try to be more patient with this (not my strongest quality) and go slow...will let you know how the revision turns out. > > Hi, - I'm afraid this isn't too uncommon.
