Guest guest
Jen, welcome and thanks for doing alot of research before! I don't think it's a good idea to have your PCP give you antibiotics...you might just build up a stronger resistance to the ones given to you by Dr. Aceves. He starts you on antibiotics the day before surgery and follows it with a 10 day supply that you will take home with you. You will gently wash the incisions with soap and water, pat them dry and go about your business. The incisions heal rapidly, the strips come off easily. As I stated in another email, your primary focus and contribution to this journey is mastering the pre-op diet so that your liver shrinks and lessens the risks of complications during surgery. That's FAR more important than taking a round of anti-biotics your body doesn't need. My experience in Mexico was a breeze. No complications, I'm hoping yours is the same! Good luck! lapjen07 <lapjen07@...> wrote: My family has made sure I am taking EVERY precaution for my Nov. 28th surgery. Guest guest
Nope, don't take anything. They may not work with the antibiotics that Dr. A gives, it could delay surgery if it isn't the right antibiotic. Three days... nope, that is incorrect. If you have some special need and require antibiotics longer than what they already do then you need to make sure that is included in the pre-op info you send to Nina so the doctors can review it prior to surgery. They will give you a tablet to take at bedtime the night before surgery. It's a long acting antibiotic. You will be discharged with a bottle of liquid antibiotics to take home with you. Don't take anything else without talking to Nina first before surgery. Not even aspirin, especially not aspirin! That can make you bleed during surgery. NO MEDS without letting Nina know (so she can talk to Dr. Aceves or the Internal Medicine doc) one week prior to surgery unless you already wrote it in your pre op forms. It is not standard in the US or Mexico to take antibiotics for three days prior to surgery unless you have some unique medical problem requiring you to do so.Infection... very rare. Especially if you follow the post op instructions. There was a post on another board that just about made my head pop. A girl (different doctor but same post op instructions) was told NO tub baths (showers only) and no swimming for something like 4-6 weeks. You don't want your incisions soaking in dirty water. She decided she knew better and went swimming in a public pool a few short days after surgery. Little children PEE in public pools. Heck, some adults urinate in swimming pools. She had newly healing incisions and she went swimming in pee water. How stupid is that?? She ended up infected and blamed her doc. It wasn't her doc's fault that she went swimming in pee water a few days after surgery, she didn't follow his instructions. I think it was a US doc, I can't remember who it was. Thing is, she got an infection. It goes against the doc's infection stats and it wasn't even his fault. Any doctor that has done a number of bands is going to have some people with infections. Sometimes it might be the doc, the hospital or the patient. There is no way of telling unless you really pin people down and ask things such as... did they go swimming immediately after surgery? Did they take tub baths? Etc. So any doc is going to have an infection stat but it should be much less than 1%. So this goes to show that just because a doc has an infection stat doesn't necessarily mean the infection was his fault. It is often times the patients not following their instructions. This is why it is important to follow the instructions given by the doc. Everything must be followed, the lifting restrictions, incision care, diet, the works. It's critical. How you handle the post op phase sets the tone for the life of your band. If you get an infection you could potentially lose your band. It's just not worth it. The prep they use for surgery is sticky and hard to wash off after surgery. *I* call it glue, Dr. A disagrees with me. ;o) It's very difficult to wash off after surgery and that is for a reason, it continues to kill bacteria after surgery. It might take a few days to a couple of weeks to wear off, that's okay. Let it do the job it is there for. I should repost that thing I wrote after my own surgery for the newbies. It tells all about the " glue " used. ;o)On 10/29/07, vanessa bobo <vjbobo2003@...> wrote: DR. A WILL GIVE YOU ANTIBIOTICS WHEN YOU GET THERE AND THEN HE WILL ALSO SEND YOU HOME WITH A BOTTLE. Guest guest
At the time they do your pre-ops at the Hospital, Yolanda will give you an antibiotic pill. Then, after your surgery, you will take antibiotics daily and go home with small bottle of amoxicillin, which you have to take per instructions. If you follow Doctor's instructions on taking your meds and not soaking for 15 days you will be fine. My incisions are nice and smooth, like I scratched my skin in a straight line. They were bruised at first, but now they cleared up and unless you know what to look for, you would not notice them. I was banded on Sep 29/07. I, like all people on this Board, have full confidence in Dr Aceves' handling of surgeries, you can entrust yourself to his judgement. I just crave them and feel SO much better when I get new useful knowledge. Please feel free to email me any of your old postings that you think are important. Bansters are so SMART.
