Guest guest
Hi, I am gettting a Nucleus CI soon (since I can't get AB due to recall).. I was just wondering if anyone has had bad side effects from CI implantation such as a severed facial nerve, infections or tinnitus (if never had before)? I am just trying to get an idea of there are any really bad side effects before I go through with this. Thanks!! Tom
Guest guest
Hi Tom, Welcome to and congrats on your decision to be implanted. I myself have been implanted for 3 years (oct. 31). There are now 4 people in my family with implants and none of us has ever had a problem wtih any serious side effects. Although it can happen occasionally, any surgery carries some risk, It's a chance every one of us took when we made the decision to be implanted. Our desire to hear and the benefits gained far outweighed any fear of long lasting problems.<smiles> I have heard of one of two cases of facial paralysis in my 3 years of being on several forums but these were temporary and they did subside with time. I can't recall the people's names who had the problems, but hopefully some of them are still on the list and can tell you more about it. Facial nerves are monitored during surgery so the risk of this happening are pretty minimal. Some people have balance problems for a time after surgery but there are some things one can take to lessen these side effects if they are a problem. You should talk to your surgeon and discuss all of these things prior to surgery. I know some of these thoughts can be pretty scarey, butmany of us have been there gone through the surgery and have had absolutely no problems, but plenty of wonderful benefits from being implanted. Many people actually say once they are activated it seems to make their tinnitus less severe. I did have a bout with tinnitus between surgery and activation and had never had tinnitus the whole time I wore hearing aids, but it only lasted about a week. I attributed it to the scrambling my skull took when I was implanted; once I was healed somewhat, the noises disappeared. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.. either here on the forum or you can email me privately. Stick around with us. This is a great group and most are very willing to share their experiences. Great to have you here. Guest guest
Hi Tom, Just wanted to say that I had my implant done one week ago with no side effects at all. Like you, I also had concerns and wondered if I were opening a door to other problems when I only wanted to hear again. As mentions, we all underwent surgery knowing there was a possibility of something going wrong. I discussed my concerns with my physician and was satisfied these problems can happen but are infrequent. None of the side effects would keep me from living my life but hearing loss/deafness can certainly limit your options. I'm very glad I went with the surgery and am scheduled for hookup this week. Hope you join our group. We're a great bunch of folks and all are eager to get on with this business of hearing. --Gayle > > > Hi, > > I am gettting a Nucleus CI soon (since I can't get AB due to recall).. > I was just wondering if anyone has had bad side effects from CI > implantation such as a severed facial nerve, infections or tinnitus > (if never had before)?
