Both Tim's mother (who has been to our house twice in the past 2 years) and my father (was shocked about him) said that wasn't disciplined. Did they listen to the fact we take him to a behavioral psych (they probably don't even know what that is), a DS expert, a neurologist, have an IEP and behavioral plan. etc?? No, we need to spank him. LOL...like lack of spanking caused his ADHD, ODD, OCD, etc. PLEASE!! I'm glad Tim and I are on the same wavelength and can try our best to ignore these comments. I didn't even tell them that is now under the care of a psychiatrist - and I don't think they need to know what medications he is taking now. Also, TIm's mom insisted that is isolating me and I am isolating him. She also said I am going to resent him for that. I've raised that kid for 9 years now and any good mother will accomadate her child based on their needs. If that means not going to the mall, so be it. I don't resent him and I'm sure Tim is happy that I'm not at the mall that often Tim and I do have a partnership - we both give each other breaks and believe we are happy people. All I can think is thank god that Tim and I had a special needs child and not our parents. I can honestly say and feel pretty confident that Tim and I are far better parents than ours were (my mom being the exception) and we take great pleasure, despite some bumps along the way, in being parents with all the joys and challenges that parenting brings to us. We are blessed! I will have to say my sister was also here - I wished she could have stayed a week. >> , My parents live in the same town and see us several times a week. They should know all the things about but they still fall into this trap. Heck, sometimes I get frustrated at 's limitations but know that it is what works for him. Even dh gets frustrated at his limitations at times. I don't look forward to holidays. doesn't handle the change in routine well and gets overstimulated very easily. Of course all the people in the house getting him goofy doesn't help. Fortunately many children with ds do well with holidays and have a great time. I wish was one of them but he gets better each year. We keep working at it. Sometimes I think extended family is more frustrating than the child. Anyway, just sympathizing. Oh, I am dealing with family who lives with us all the time and can't deal with Mav or his issues and are very critical of how we are raising him. He has cousins who refuse to play with him. And are allowed to. We steer clear of as many family related activities as possible. Now we have a foster daughter who has ds and her behavior is SO different from Mav's. She is passively defiant and they don't see it. Mav is IN YOUR FACE defiant and lets everybody know......so now we get how well behaved she is and how spoiled he is. This is MY family. My husbands are even worse but they are in Minnesota and we only have to see them every couple of years.

I laughed so hard I woke up..he turned to see what I was laughing at and he also started to chuckle. It was great! The next day I relayed the story to both my mom and my sister. They didn't think it was cute..they just pointed out that that was one more reason why they never have him overnight and he's too old for that..and we need to get a lock for that fridge!. I feel so sad that they can't see the JOY of those simple little antics! >> , I also have those stories that people just don't get. My husband still gets up at night and raids the refrig. You're never too old for that. While 's defiance is frustrating I really enjoy his spunk and creativity. Fortunately his teachers get it but not everyone appreciates it. I always struggle with getting compliance without crushing his spirit. Not that it is likey that is even possible. Karyn

Guest guest
, I am so proud of you. I had a good chuckle at the wedding events. Weddings are stressful. I remember the day of my first wedding, all I wanted to do was get it over with. Makes a good argument for paying them to elope and use the money for a down payment on a house, doesn't it?! I am so pleased you are doing well. Congrats. My surgery is scheduled for 9/7 and I am getting more excited each day. C.
