Guest guest
Hi Minnie, I was not born deaf but I did wear a digital hearing aid before going with the CI. One ear was completely deaf, thus we tried to aid the " better " ear to see if this would work. The digital provided me with assistance in lipreading but it did not give me clarity. I was not able to function as a hearing person. I strained my eyes and made myself very tired trying to understand people. I often heard " Oh never mind " when I asked people to repeat what they said. So...although it was better than nothing, it couldn't be compaired to the CI which allowed me to hear. I hope this is the answer you are seeking. What do you mean by you " hear well " with the digital hearing aids? If you are not struggling to understand what's going on around you, it sounds as if your aids are taking care of your need. Are you able to understand in a group setting? Can you use the phone? Can you understand someone speaking to you from behind? Alice From: minniecc2000 Dear anyone, I m writing to any of you who is born deaf and have tried the digital hearing aids first. Guest guest
Minnie, Although I didn't wear digital hearing aids, I did use other hearing aids before implant and there is no comparison between hearing with any hearing aid and a ci at least nothing I've heard of to date. A hearing aid... No matter how powerful, only amplifies what you can hear at present. A ci is a whole new way of hearing and it provides you with more of a speech range than a hearing aid does. I don't know if you get feedback or squealing with digital hearing aids, but with a ci there is none of that squealing when you get close to someone or when your hearing aid gets too close to something . The electrodes of the ci bypass the diseased part of the ear and helps to stimulate your remaining healthy hair cells. You don't hear like you do with a hearing aid. You have to learn to decipher this new hearing, but once you get that, I think you'll be glad you were implanted. The ci is a last resort and most agree that your own hearing is the best way to go. If you are deaf enough and meet the qualifications for a ci, then I think you will like it much better in the long run. Please feel free to email me either here on the forum or privately if you have any questions. Have a Great Weekend.
