Re: Note to the Moderators: List privacy issues

Ken,

what you say is true. However, not having too easily available records is

probably a good idea, that way peolpe don't stumble on to it by accident.

One might not be looking for info on you specifically, but happen upon it if

it comes up with a general search on google.

Even the slightest deterrent does something. For example, someone can

easily break into a house if they want to (many people don't have alarms or

security systems, just a simple lock) yet, we still don't leave the door

unlocked.

If someone has to subscribe to a list for info, it's just one exta step, a

small one, but one that some might not take. Besides, I think many people

feel better about that way, and perhaps that's reason enough on it's own.

Just an opinion, it doesn't affect me personally much, as I'm already using

an alias.

Re: (Off topic) Note to the Moderators: List

privacy issues

My comments:

Being an information scientist who have worked for MSN etc,

there is no privacy on the web except when you create a group

consisting only of people you know PERSONALLY (i.e. in person)... and

even than, you must trust them not to autoforward stuff elsewhere.

If you wish privacy, than go to , MSn etc and create an

ANONYMOUS email identity, perhaps a nick name.

If an employer, insurance company, ex-wife is aware that you may have

or have had CFIDS: than they may join every 'private' list that there

is -- solely to obtain information on YOU, if that is their intent.

Restricting archives to membership only is an illusion of privacy..

anyone with even a little motivation with find you!

I just found my former boss on the web. There was only ONE page on

the entire web where his email/telephone was listed. He was very

surprised to hear my voice... because he had 'gone to ground' and

thought that he had eliminated every reference to himself. Well, he

did not mind it, because it resulted in a job for him (working for

me).

If you want privacy, creating a pseudo identity is the only way.

IMHO Ken

Hi! My name is , I live in se MN, and I usually lurk, read, and

learn. I am behind in my emails, so if this has been answered, please excuse

me.

But I must take exception to part of 's message. There are other

methods of doing HP soap. Another method is using a Crock Pot, know as

CPHP. Maybe this is what is referring to in saying " pressure

cookers " . I do not know of anyone who uses a pressure cooker to do HP.

Pressure cookers would be *VERY* dangerous. There is less danger with crock

pots. A good list with lots of information in its files ins HotProcessEtc.

Please email me off list if you want information on how to join.

Thank you for listening to my two cents :~)

in se MN

-------------snip---------------

Hot process soap ( " HP " ) is cold process soap which has been brought to

trace and then continues to be cooked over either direct heat ( " DH " ) or in

a double boiler ( " DB " ) system.

----------------snip --------------------

There are some people doing HP in pressure cookers, however, we DO NOT

recommend this! Should something go wrong when one cooks dinner with a

pressure cooker, the result could be hot food and steam to deal with. When

one cooks soap with a pressure cooker the result could be lye which has not

yet saponified to deal with, and this could be very dangerous. We suggest

anyone thinking of using this method check first with the manufacturer of

the pressure cooker and second with the local fire department.

RE BCBS

I'm a really old timer too, March 6, 2000. BCBSNC paid for my surgery..

I've done beautifully, no problems. However, when we were looking into private

insurance, after a company my husband work for went bankrupt, we first turned

to BCBSNC. They turned me down as a private pay client because " of the MGB

surgery " . This was almost 2 years post surgery, and as I said I've had no

problems, am healthier than I've ever been. So, go figure.

Regarding school districts: I live in the Pearland School district and we

have been very pleased. My son had the same teacher and aides all throughout

his PPCD program and when he went to lifeskills he had the same teacher and

aides for two years. His teacher recommended that he needed to be totally

mainstreamed this year but would need aides. Prepared for a fight at the ARD I

armed

myself with all my rights but didn't need it. He will have two aides (one of

which he already had ) during the day and will continue to go to his Special

Ed teacher for any tutoring. Our elementary school experience so far has been

great. They communicated frequently and helped me address needs at home as

well ( potty training, etc) as at school. The two schools he attended are CJ

and Rustic Oak (currently) . Good Luck~

Sounds like he's in a great program! I never hear anything about Pearland

schools. Our twins are in Klein ISD and although I'd never brag about their

special ed. program as a district--I have been very pleased with the school

that our boys attend. I love our principal and their teacher. Also, the

regular ed. teachers that Joe has had have been wonderful to deal with and the

kids(regular ed.) have been so accepting of Joe. There's such a positive

atmosphere in the school and in the way in which they treat the special ed kids.

Now the other school that Ben attended for a few years I did NOT like--actually,

it was the teacher that I wasn't happy with. I did, however, like the principal

there. Once we moved him back to his home school, where he is now--it was

wonderful! This illustrates the point that I've been hearing others make...that

it's hard to say this district is good or bad--sometimes the quality of the

program can vary dramatically between two different schools within the same

district. I do also agree that it helps when the people in administration have

an understanding and willlingness to do what it takes to have a successful

program. Also, their willingness to truly listen to and work with parents is

also important. However, in my opinion, something that is crucial to the

success of your child's program is the PARENT'S willingness to be involved in

their program and know who to talk to when something needs improving. I feel

I did the best that I could do at Ben's other school and it did improve in many

ways--however, I was tired of continually being a watchdog and making sure the

teacher was following through on things we discussed. So after 3 years there,

I decided to pull him out and put him back into his home school.(his other

program was an " autism unit " class) I only wish I had done it sooner!

thanks. I wished we got more such estimates and predictions.

Lipsitch, Dec.17

I would bet against a seasonal flu this year

The number of flu-related deaths this winter is likely to be smaller than normal

12 scientists, Dec.17A dozen scientists surveyed by the CDC were split on the likelihood of a wave of new cases

of either type of flu in JanuaryDec.17Eight flu researchers surveyed by Bloomberg were similarly divided, though most agreed

this year's worst flu days are over.

Arnold Monto, Dec.17

With each week that goes by without seasonal flu, the possibility of widespread

outbreaks diminishes

Two months ago, I would have said we're going to see the seasonal viruses

there will be more swine flu cases in January, with outbreaks primarily in areas the

disease has so far skipped. The number of flu-related deaths this winter is likely

to be smaller than normal

Schaffner, Dec.11One theory involves the receptors where flu viruses attach themselves to lung cells.

When a person catches the flu, the virus infects almost all of the exposed lung cells

and occupies those receptors. When a different virus comes along, it has nothing

to attach to and is "crowded outWhen a pandemic strikes, and a new strain whips through a population with little natural immunity,

so many people get sick simultaneously that a seasonal flu strain can't find enough hosts with

vacant receptors to spread,

"I'm not so sure how strong the crowding-out theory is. It certainly seemed to play a role

in the Southern Hemisphere, but we anticipate there will not be crowding out in

January and February.Longini,Nov.24My intuition tells me if we're going to have a third peak it would have to be under

conditions in which the virus spreads to older populationsYou'd expect a combination of natural immunity and now vaccination would more or less

eliminate the possibility of a big third wave in children.Based on past pandemics and on what happened in the Southern Hemisphere, seasonal flu is also unlikely this year.

Mercer, Dec.17The conventional wisdom among our flu epidemiologists is that pandemic H1N1 will

dominate at least through the next flu season 2010-2011, but no one really knows

We are recommending both pandemic and seasonal flu shots

Lone Simonsen, Dec.17

more years of life will be lost this year, and that is the true toll of a pandemic

targets young people, and that pattern is likely to continue with swine flu for two to five years

swine flu will return in January and may circulate simultaneously with seasonal flu strains,

potentially attacking the young and old.
