Guest guest Posted June 4, 2007 Report Share Posted June 4, 2007 This is just a suggestion but for those of you who are going to drive you might want to leave your car at the AA parking lot which is right at the main border crossing. I think it was only $3 per day but if you can arrange to meet Ernesto there as he is returning from San Diego you can save yourself a lot of hassle at the border & don't take the chance of an accident in Mexico which your insurance probably will NOT cover. Unless you just want the challenge of driving in a town of 1.3 million people with no idea where you are going, no idea where you are going to park & drivers that don't always follow the rules be my guest! I have done this a couple of times and as long as you are not in the main part in front of the doors, but to the side where the guys work, you will have no problem. I have walked accross the border without any problems at all, in fact it's really easy! You can always get a taxi if you want, they are cheap as well if you don't want to wait for Yolanda, but believe me she is pretty darn fast and she will be there within minutes, just have their numbers and call as soon as you park the car...by the time you walk to the hotel Del Norte it's about 10-15mins gives her time to meet you. > > This is just a suggestion but for those of you who are going to drive > you might want to leave your car at the AA parking lot which is right > at the main border crossing. Guest guest Posted June 5, 2007 Report Share Posted June 5, 2007 Driving into Mexical is easy. I have done it 5 or six times. I have driven a rental car in twice. When I had surgery my husband stayed in the US side and drove in everyday with a rental car. It is only about a mile in on the same street that crosses you over into the US. You can park in the Pharmacy parking which is on the street that crosses you back to the US. It really is easy and they are not horrible drivers. And as far as the drivers not always following the rules, they do not do that here either. You can get insurance at a number of places close to the border. They have little insurance shops. For one day it was about $35 - well worth the peace of mind. My insurance company referred me to another company here in the states. They wanted $25, but I didnt have time to wait. NOTE: The insurance you buy on the street going into Mexico has a $500 deductable, so you are only covered for serious accidents etc. OR if your car gets stolen. Also, take a right just after the Hospital, and then right again into the Emergency Parking Lot. There are attendants there that will watch your wheels for you. Also, when we were leaving to come home after banding, If you notice, the street where you turn left 1 block from the hospital has 3 lanes. there are solid double yellow lines between the first and second lanes. The first lane is ONLY for traffic going downtown. The far 2 lanes are for leaving the country, If there is a long line of cars stretching to your right, DO NOT turn into the first lane, with the idea of merging to your right to get into the lanes for the border, as we did. Sr, Bunco officer of the law pulled us over and wanted to give us a "Certificate of Appreciation" (ticket) He was going to make us follow him to the station to pay a fine. In my broken hatchet spanish I told him where we had been, and he said to follow him. We thought we were headed for a Mexican prison... Well, he just went around the block, and then past the Hospital. He slowed at 3 intersections to see if the traffic leaving town was stretching past the intersections. On the 4th street, he turned left and allowed us to get in the BACK of the line and go ahead and leave the country. SOOOOO, dont think you can merge. At the stop sign at the hospital, look ahead 1 block and see if there are cars past the next intersection by the border fence. If so, turn right and go to the next block until there are no cars to your left. No cuttting in line. The line forms at the rear... Made it through the requisite 2 days, though, and dropped 6 pounds, so it's hard to argue with that! Loved having soup today! I can do full liquids no problem. I went to the gym tonight and did a really hard workout and now my stomach is making all kinds of gurlgy noises. Drinking some water to hopefully shut it up so it doesn't keep me awake tonight. Yeah my stomach started to make theose strange noises today, i wasnt hungry but it just kept on growling. I noticed that I can have the liquids with no problem just that I can have much less than before....hope tommorrow goes well with the mushies eventhough i am scared. Good Luck!!!
