Guest guest
The clock is ticking loudly, although I cannot hear it. My CI surgery will take place on Oct. 28 at Kaiser's in Hollywood,California. My doctor is Fred Ditirro, who has done over 400 implants, without any problems. That makes me feel great!!Recently, I asked if I could have bilaterals. The answer was they have experience with only single implants.I have selected Nucleus 24C with soft tip. We have not talked about 3G, or any other issues and I'm wondering whether we should be talking about them prior to the surgery. At present, I have a single HA an AVR675xp, which is excellent, had served me well, however lately, and suddenly my hearing got worse and worse, resulting in having Dr. Ditirro authorising my surgery. In essence,my HA, presently is not really helping me at all.The surgery will be done on the good ear. Now, my bad ear, born dead and still is.Kaiser will not do bilaterals. Lets talk about the future, and I need guidance.Should I aim for another CI . And how??Moses

Guest guest
,glad to hear from you again!! My wife Lily and I are spending several days here in Levittown,NY to be with our kids and grandkids. We'll be back in California on Sunday night. My doctor told me that he did not want to take a chance with the " dead " ear,and he has had no experience with bilaterals. The same, with other Kaiser facilities. I might be tempted to approach others for a second implant, and I wonder how expensive it will be for me to fork out my own money. It does not hurt to ask!!Moses

Guest guest
Hi Moses, I found your e-mail and you were asking about your future and need guidance. you asked, Should I aim for another CI and how? I'm no expert but I know a couple of people who has two CI and love them. What did your doctor say about having a CI in your dead ear? What do you mean by " how " ? Guest guest
I hope you are enjoying being with all your family. They been expermenting with people to have two implants in Seattle. One of the person I know became deaf over night in both ears. She wanted to get two implants but the doctor said that he couldn't do it at the time as they had to follow the FDA rules. (This was about 5 years ago or so). THen the doctor approuch her and ask her if she be willing to get the second one for Virginia Mason expermental lab testing with two CI. She jump to the chance. And the second CI was free. surgically, equipment, and all. Another person I know, she wanted two. No matter what. She search everywhere to find a doctor who would do two CI. I think she got it done it Texas. THat was over 10 years ago. The third one... She had one implant in one ear about 15 years ago. She had the old model and it was failing on her. A couple of years ago, she had her other ear done and now doing great. On your dead ear, Do they know if it would work with a CI? -- Re: Moses' CI ,glad to hear from you again!! Guest guest
Hi Moses - You are indeed in good hands with Dr. DiTirro - He did my surgery almost 5 years ago (Nov. '99). It has truly been a miracle for me - Kaiser (Los Angeles) does not give you a choice of which processor you receive. You will get the BWP (Sprint) AND the 3G BTE. I happen to agree that that is the way to go - but we are all individual - Using the Sprint when hooked up gives you more opportunities for success. The processor holds 4 programs and on each you can adjust BOTH the volume and the sensitivity - The 3G only has the capability of two programs with EITHER volume of sensitivity. I use the 3G almost exclusively but think the Sprint gives me slightly better hearing especially in group situations. Why not take one thing at a time - I have only one CI and have no desire to go bilateral - I can use the telephone - both " land " and cell. I hear talk radio in the car with the accompanying road noise. I can understand speech without lip-reading. Kaiser does not do bilaterals - I've never asked why - probably cost effectiveness vs.additional ability to hear? Tanner is my Audiologist and she is excellent. I would be happy answer any other questions you make have - Kaiser's Audiology Dept. is outstanding and Dr. DiTirro and his surgical staff are wonderful - very caring and kind. Guest guest
Hi Moses, I see you have gotten some replies to your question already. Like , I don't (usually) get to the forums until nighttime so I may be a day or more in answering posts. Wow, your surgery date is fast approaching! And you're already thinking of a second one! But, only drawback is that Kaiser does not do bilaterals. Hmmm, the way I see it...you can go for the one on the 28th and get used to that one. Then if you still want to implant your other ear and your ENT won't do it then maybe you could find another CI Center to do the other ear. I don't know but that is a thought for you to consider. My implant center is also not doing bilaterals at this time. But, that's okay with me. My CI has given me the best hearing I've ever had in my whole life so not looking into getting my dead ear done...at least not at this time. You stated that you have not yet discussed the processors and other issues and was wondering if that should all be discussed before the surgery. I should think so! If you already had your appointment to pick out the processor then that's pretty much it until hook up day when you will learn more about it. That's how I learned all about my BWP and then my 3G..by waiting until I was actually hooked up with them. If you have questions go ahead and ask your ENT or audie before the surgery. Or ask here on the forum and maybe someone can help. Good luck to you on surgery day, Moses! Be sure to rest for a good week or two after the surgery. This is an exciting time for you and your family. Best wishes for a successful surgery, a smooth recovery! Patti Surgery Day 11/25/02 (What A Day!)
