, I guess I'm confused on the eating plan. I thought it was clear fluids only for the first TWO full weeks. Have you tried Gas X for the gas? And lots of walking. <bulletnurse@...> wrote: Hey there,Thought I'd touch base and say Hi. I was banded Aug.13th and I had a fantastic experience. I've lost 13 pounds so far. I really like the berry and grape flavored Isopure. I just made myself some potato cheese soup and it's really good.

This liquid stage is killing me! One question, I have alot of gas coming out, is this common? Thanks again to everyone for support and sharing experiences. I posted some pics. Take care,

Congrats on your 8/13 surgery!

Yeah, it's common until you learn not to swallow air. You probably swallow a lot of air and don't even realize it. Thing about a band is that (more so with restriction) it acts like a one way valve. Air goes down your band but it doesn't typically come up so it comes... out, instead. ;o)

Start really paying attention to what and how you are eating. Avoid the gassy type foods and most of all, watch how you swallow. It takes practice but you'll do it.

Help me Bipley........I have figured out that I swallow air because

I have to burp after the first couple bites of food or I can't eat

any more and it hurts a lot until I do burp (is something wrong that

burping is possible?) I am 56 and obvoiusly have not even figured

out HOW to swallow correctly. I eat slowly, I chew thoroughly until

I can " moosh " it all between my teeth and the food is liquid but I

did not know there was more than one way to swallow. Please explain

so I can make the pain (and the gas that doesn't come up in burps

and there is plenty of that) go away.

Gloria...

If you burp after eating then yes, you are swallowing air. If you burp while air is still in your little stomach it will come up. If the air passes through your stoma it won't come " up " again, this is even more true when people have restriction.

Not swallowing air is not something I can really explain. It's something that you learn over time. Before you swallow food stop and think about what is in your mouth. Let the air out of your mouth and try to only keep food in there, close your lips and swallow. That's the best I can describe it. Most people have similar issues, you are not alone. It just takes thinking about it before you swallow. It's like not drinking fluids with meals, you learn to stop doing that. You learn to stop swallowing air as well.

Bipley, Can you give examples of gassy foods? I have had alot of that lately and my bowls movements are not regular as before my surgeryBipley <Bipley@...> wrote: .... Congrats on your 8/13 surgery! Lots of veggies such as beans, broccoli, ... wait. Let me find a link:

http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gas/index.htm

Cyrena... you paying attention? Is says 14 times a day!! And it was the very first link I found! ;o) (sorry folks, private joke)

You won't have the same bowel habits that you did prior to surgery, your diet is drastically different now. Give it time.

Hi ,

It is said that high fiber foods are the culprits for excessive gas production in the human gut. The equilibrium of your digestive system is upset by surgery and it will take time for it to settle to its former state. In the meantime watch the fiber content of the foods you eat. The protein powders on the market have fiber (soluble and insoluble) at varying proportions. Read the labels. Then as you get onto solids, watch out for legumes (beans, lentils, peas), other high fiber vegetables and whole grain foods. Bran is also a known culprit-- no bran muffins. Unfortunately most foods that are good for you nutritionally will not be so good socially at least for a while.
