Guest guest
Hi Everybody, I finally got my doctor's referal for the CI surgeon at OHSU in Portland, Oregon. I'm set up for CT Scan and Consultation on 9 November. I guess as the time approaches, I have mixed feelings. I want a CI badly, but I'm also nervous about having my good ear implanted. I mentioned before that my audiologist recommended that my good ear be implanted rather than my dead ear right ear. I e- mailed the Cochlear audiologist and asked about good ear, bad ear implantation successes. She basically said the same thing that my local audiologist said. They both say that their experience shows that the best chance of success is to do the ear that has been getting auditory stimulation. However, they say the only way to know for sure though is to have both ears implanted. So, I guess if the surgeon says the same thing, and I can get an implant, I'll go with the good ear. I want to make sure I choose the ear that'll give me the best chance of success. I also get nervous reading the FDA site regarding all that can go wrong. But, guess it's like reading side effects on a prescription. If we got nervous about side effects that might happen, we'd probably never take any prescription. LOL. Guest guest
Wow Stan, I am happy for you. My name is and I live in New Jersey. I just had the cat scan done for my implant also and it is going to be in my right ear too. I go for a psych evaluation next Tuesday which this cochlear clinic requires and then back to the surgeon. Good wishes are on the way.
Guest guest
Stan, great to hear all is in order and insurance approval already gone through...You will hopefully be hearing by the time the New Year gets here or shortly after. Yep.. it's not uncommon to get both nervous and excited.. I think my excitement won over in my case. Your dr is right.. it's not an exact science and both my mother and oldest sister had unstimulated ears for well over 20 years. Mom does very well in quieter situations and my sister who was deaf longer than my mom even talks on the phone..mother's implant is about 10-11 years old and sis has the newer nucleus 24C wearing the 3G processor. with today's technology, anything is possible and no one can say for sure which ear is better.. We actually currently have 4 family members with implants and we all do just great..I hear at about 96% now in quiet and slightly lower in noisy settings.. Quite a turn around from hearing just 5% overall before my implant and that was tested in a quiet booth! Wishing you the best and please feel free to ask any questions you may have.. either here on the forum or privately. Please let us know when you find out your surgery date.
