Guest guest
Hi , A device similar to what you describe has been thought of by various computer programmers, but unfortunately nothing has become of it. All too often when it comes to blindness technology, concepts are often though of but not turned into reality. Part of this is due to the high cost of technology designed for the blind. For instance, a screen reader can cost anywhere from $300-$800. A Braille display costs just as much as a portable Braille PDA -- $5,000. So, as you can see, one must pay a very high price (or have the means to receive funding) in order to take advantage of this technology. As a side note...When I received my TeleBraille Braille TTY back in 1995, I was *amazed* that it cost $6,000!! I received my unit through my state's telephone assistance program. If it weren't for their help, I wouldn't have been able to afford one. I now use my TeleBraille or a computer TTY program called NexTalk for telephone communication. With e-mail and instant messaging, however, I hardly ever make relay or TTY calls anymore.
Guest guest
, Yes, it shocked me about the TTY, however, I would like for the government to pay these high costs, or maybe, the computer companies, like Dell or HP, would give the braille cmoputer moitior (if they invent it) to blind people free. Others than blind people, sorry. Maybe, we could e-mail to HP and Dell and tell them about it, and maybe they even would think about it and invent it. Guest guest
, It is very nice that you'd be daydreaming like this but.... we are in North Americal, the capitalist center of the world, so, I do not see any free thing for blind or deaf-blind people. If companies would be able to invent p^rograms for the general public and render them accessible for us, then the costs would get down and many would be able to afford it but, it is not tomorrow that this will happen. sorry to disappoint At 18:19 2004-07-05, you wrote: >, > Yes, it shocked me about the TTY, however, I would like for the > government to pay these high costs, or maybe, the computer companies, > like Dell or HP, would give the braille cmoputer moitior (if they invent > it) to blind people free. Guest guest
Same as here. *Guilty with 100 million counts of use the Internet every day* :-) Re: Blind people that is able to use the computer In a message dated 7/5/2004 3:00:06 PM Pacific Daylight Time, lisak70@... writes: With e-mail and instant messaging, however, I hardly ever make relay or TTY calls anymore. Guest guest
Lee, Yes, I imagine that e-mail has been *very* important to the deaf and hard of hearing communities. For blind people, the computer allows access to printed material that may otherwise not be available. Speaking of e-mail, in my e-mail signature, I specifically request that people e-mail me instead of use relay. Even though I love relay, it takes forever compared to sending a quick e-mail or instant message. <smile>
Guest guest
, Unfortunately, free computer equipment for the blind isn't possible here in the U.S. However, in Europe (such as the UK), it's common for blind children to be given free Braille equipment like Braille displays, Perkins Braillewriters, etc. This is because Europe makes a strong effort to promote Braille useage far more than we here in the United States do. It's too bad because so many blind people do not have this technology available to them. As someone who has used computer since 1983, it's easy for me to forget that not everyone (sighted and hearing people included) do not own a computer for financial or personal reasons. Me? I can't live without mine! LOL!

Guest guest
I use the computer relay because that way I can make calls anywhere and it is free. No long distance charges at all. I dont use it much but I sure am grateful for it when I have to use it. Guest guest
I use it a lot, actaully. *Guilty* I use it for long distance so I can call anywhere free, including hotels to get there fast instead of 800 number. :-) Re: Blind people that is able to use the computer > > In a message dated 7/5/2004 3:00:06 PM Pacific Daylight Time, > lisak70@... writes: > > With e-mail and instant > messaging, however, I hardly ever make relay or TTY calls anymore. > > > I am just as guility.
