Kelli,

Don't worry my surgery is in 4 days and now that it is getting closer, I don't even want to tell anyone else, because as soon as I do I have to go through the whole explanation of how I have been researching Dr. A. for over a year, and how I have talked to several, several people who have been there and done this, and how it's not some backyard chop shop, it's just become, to where I am tired of explaining myself, and for some reason, all of a sudden there are news broadcast, articles in people magazine, by the way one of the ladies in that article, is the same one the news ran here the other night, so it's not like a hundred different people have had bad experiences, it is maybe a handful if that. So don't worry, Dr. A is a great doctor, and I wouldn't go anywhere but to him

Hi , about the people who have a problem with you going to Mexico for surgery. All I can say is people are scared of things they no nothing about. It's amazing how quick they become experts on surgery in Mexico when you say your going there. You can't change what they think and really i wouldn't even try because this is not about them it's about you and you getting healthy. You know the truth about Dr Aceves I can't speak for any others but I know you will receive the best care with Doctor Aceves. I have nothing to gain by telling anyone about my care just knowing that maybe my experance might help someone else who needs another option that is more affordable. The person you were talking about that has a problem with you getting smaller like I said before she is not much of a friend if she is not supportive of you become more healthy. Some people are afraid of change and there's not much you can do about that just concrate on getting yourself healthy and the rest will fall into place. Good luck with whatever you decide Belinda

Going to Mexico

Has anyone had the same looks of shock when you mention you want to go to Mexico for the surgery? I swear, it's as if I was being sent to the torture chamber or something. My friends are in shock that I would even dare consider going to Mexico and they mention that the doctors there are horrible. I try mentioning all the problems that happen here in the US but they turn a deaf ear. I tell them why it's so dang expensive here for the surgery, primarily administrative costs, pharmaceutical companies and whatever else that can be added. I must admit I was a bit taken back but now that I have talked or emailed some people about surgeons in Mexico, I feel they have more compassion for their patients than the doctors in the US. I am not saying that the US has bad doctors but neither does Mexico. Anyways, for those of you who had some shocking looks or disapproval please share your story or how you dealt with those not wanting you to have the surgery. Also, just a side question have you had anyone (friends) that are in disapproval because you would become thin and they would feel guilty being heavy? I have a friend that is heavy but not as heavy as me and I feel she is being negative because she knows I'll eventually become smaller than her. If you had this problem, how did you work it out with the person? Thanks!!!I love this website, everyone here has so much information that I've been writing it down. I love how everyone is so helpful and supportive. I pray everyone is successful in obtaining their goals and for those just coming from the surgery Congratulations and Best of Luck!!! Kelli

Tracie,

If you are doing OK and the doctor feels you are progressing normally he lets you go to the hotel on the 2nd night, you have to ask though he assumes you are staying if you do not ask. Patients coming alone he does not usually let go.

Kelli,

Everything, Jackie said is true, me and my mom went to a seminar here in Texas several months ago, and the doctor admitted that he had trained in Mexico, so quit worrying and I would just quit telling people what you are going to do. Let them wonder how all the weight is dropping off of you so quickly.

Jackie,

Wow, Dr. A let you go to the hotel on the second night, you didn't have to spend two nights in the hotel, I hope he lets me do the same thing. I would love to spend the second night in the hotel instead of the hospital.

Tracie Re: Going to Mexico

Hi, Kelli.

Belinda and said it well. I'll just throw in my thoughts on this. First, I'm thinking that your family and friends are hopefully thinking of your wellbeing and health; they just don't have all the information that you have at this point. Not that you have to explain your decision to anyone, but if you decide to, remember that Mexican surgeons -- and other surgeons around the world -- have been doing this procedure much longer than U.S. docs. The band was in use in other countries since 1988 or so, and wasn't approved in the U.S. until 2000 (I think). So those "foreign" doctors have much more experience and, in fact, many have been the teachers/mentors for U.S. doctors. You've done your research (I'm assuming), so be confident in your decision. Give your friends/relatives some websites to investigate for themselves if they care to.

Fortunately, my family and friends that I told were very supportive. Because of our having been to Mexico many times on church missions trips, we probably felt more comfortable considering MX surgery than some people might. Let me share a personal example about Dr. Aceves' care. I was banded, along with my good friend, on a Wednesday. We were discharged from the Almater Hospital on Thursday evening and went to the hotel with our husbands before starting our drive home to Oregon on Friday. Well, Friday morning Dr. A actually came to the hotel to see us both before our departure -- just to make sure we were doing okay and give us a last minute once-over. We were amazed! Now, what U.S. doctor gives you that kind of attention these days?

I feel great and I love my band! Only thing I might wish for is that I'd done it 10 years ago :-)

I got that some, but I didn't tell a lot of people about the surgery. I

live in Jamaica, and people here are accustomed to going to other countries

to have medical care. People here know that Mexico is a more developed

country than Jamaica, so they aren't at all horrified. I knew my mother

would have a knee-jerk reaction about surgery in general, so I didn't tell

her about the surgery until I was a month post-op.

Hi Deb,

My husband felt the same way. He was scared of me going under " the knife " , and

scared that I choose to do it in Mexico. As a matter of fact my whole family was

against it. But I went along and did what I wanted or needed. My husband and 2

of our friends came with and we were all impressed with the hospital, staff and

quality of care. My skepticts were now supporters. And they were the ones that

brought up the conversations with regards to the Awesome staff and hospital. I

had a positive experience and am now 1 week post op. Everything will be fine. As

someone told me on the board, " you need to do this for yourself. " Best of

luck. Let us know how things go.

Hi Deb, I was banded on 4/20/06 and my Husband didnt want me to go to Mexico either. I was scheduled to have my surgery on the 28th of April and he was going to go with me...reluctantly.... so I changed my surgery date to the week prior because I knew he couldnt get away at that time. I did this because I didnt want to have to worry about him being uncomfortable. It was about ME this time. This was really out of my comfort zone to go to Mexico alone but I'll tell you what I have no regrets. I met some wonderful people and got in touch with myself for the first time in a very long time. He wasnt happy about it but he had to accept it because I was going with or without his prayers. So good luck to you. You will be just fine and he will come around. Tammy I.

Good morning Deb,

I am scheduled for surgery on the 7th...I understand your situation

with you hubby - mine wasn't on board for a while either. I finally

told him that I was having this surgery no matter what & I guess he

realized that he could get with the program because I wasn't changing

my mind.

I'll be driving into Mexicali on the 6th for my pre-op tests for

surgery the following day.

Hope to see you there.

Hey , Hope to see you there. Wish I could drive, but Houston is way to far to drive for me. I don't know how M. did it. Yep, I remember reading her post of driving with the family. What a brave gal so is. I've been going to her journals to get more prepared, plus is in Houston so I feel like I'm in such good hands. has been such a blessing. Being able to chat with her has been so rewarding. Such a nice Lady. See you there, I'm so excited aren't you? I can't wait. Thank you to everybody. Also please could you all say a prayer for me. I so believe in prayers. One for the surgery and one that my hubby is not too mad when I return home. Hi Deb,

I am glad my

journal has helped. I remember talking to you on the phone. I am so glad you

have the money to do this. You won’t regret it. It would be nice if your

hubby was onboard with you because you need the support post op. I hope he

comes around.

I'm just curious....is anyone on this board going to be at the hospital

on March 22? I'll be there that day having my port removed and would

love to visit some newly banded patients if there are any there. My

surgery was one year ago and it has been wonderful! I love to share

the experience with new patients! Let me know if you are going to be

there!

Gosh! That is too bad! I hate that we won't be there at the same time!! I'd love to see you and Janice both. I hope this fill works for you. This time....SKIP Jack's ok??? :) I'll be glad to get my port out for a while. I'll have a new one put back in sometime early this summer I think. It has to be out about 3 months I believe. Take care and tell Janice hello. I hope she is doing well. You all need to post some recent pics, ok??
