Someone on the list asked me which communication method I prefer -- the

computer or tactile interpreting. I'm sorry...I can't remember who asked

this question. <blushing> Were you referring to my preferences in general or

in terms of the CI evaluation?

There are advantages and disadvantages to tactile interpreting and Braille

captioning. For instance, Braille captioning allows me to easily understand

what is said because of having read Braille my entire life. I have no

problems keeping up with what is being typed. When I use captioning,

conversations are easier for me to process/understand because I can

instantly visualize what is being said in my mind. One downside of Braille

captioning are the technical glitches that can sometimes happen when our

computers get tempermental. <smile> Fortunately, those are far and few

between -- especially when you can " sweet talk " the computer into

cooperating. LOL! As far as tactile interpreting goes, I like the fact that

an interpreter can give me more visual information about my surroundings. A

captionist can do this as well, but since their primary job is to transcribe

what is said, sometimes there isn't enough time to convey visual

information. My captionists do the best they can, but sometimes a situation

doesn't allow for being able to type *everything*. (By the way, I'm one of

those people who *loves* getting all kinds of information about my

environment...What people look like, what clothes they're wearing, etc. For

instance, when I use relay, I ask the CA to indicate as much as he/she can

about a caller's voice or the background sounds they hear, etc.) If I were

asked to pick one method over another, I don't think I could because there

are advantages and disadvantages to both. I use Braille captioning most of

the time but there are instances where tactile interpreting works much

better.

Hi ,

I read my e-mail messages and access the Internet using a Braille display

and a screen reader. The screen reader " tells " the Braille display what is

on the screen so I can read it.

I've been using e-mail and the Internet since 1999...although I've used

computers since 1983. The first computer I ever used was an Apple IIe! When

I had enough hearing to do so, I accessed the computer using a screen reader

that would read screen information back to me in a synthesized voice.

I also have a small portable notetaker/PDA called a BrailleNote. It also has

a Braille display as well as a variety of other features including

e-mail/Internet access, a word processor, scientific calculator and GPS

(global positioning system). The GPS utility is *wonderful* because it

allows me to travel in familiar and unfamiliar areas. Information about my

location (street, address, city/zip) as well as local businesses in the

surrounding area are all shown on the BrailleNote's Braille display.

I consider myself so fortunate to be living in this wonderful age of

technology. It makes deafblindness less if a handicap and allows me to

communicate with anyone I want -- regardless of the fact that I can't see or

hear.

I use a screen reader called Jaws and it reads the words on the xreen to me.

I cannot read print. If i occasionally come across a word I cannot

recognize, then I have it spelled phonetically.

Hi Alice,

I dont't know if I can say that I am excited; what I can say for sure is

that I hope a much bette3r quality of sound which is very bad right now.

This surgery will happen in Quebec City cause it il still the only place in

Quebec where we call go for this kind of surgery. Hpet that very soon there

will be possibilities right here in Montreal but I fear that will not be

pretty son; I can no longer wait. I _musty be ready.

And yes, I enjoyed picking up a few words of French also ... reading

vocabulary anyway. Years ago I vacationed in Quebec City and

Montreal (beautiful cities!) -- and all I had to do to get people to

speak English with me was to try to speak French. I'm afraid I

mangled the language horribly. I had a hard time knowing how to

pronounce things in English ... I'm sure I had no luck at all with

the French pronounciation. <s>
