Hi Lance,

Let me start by saying there are 3 wonderful brands of ci and they

all work. The best way to find out the differences would be to go to

the websites or contact the different companies and they will send

you information on their implants.

Here are the 3 websites for you.

www.cochlear.com

www.bionicear.com

www.medel.com

Most of us can tell you only about our particular implant, and I'm

sure you would get " my implant is the best because " from most anyone.

bottom line though is to research all 3 companies, pick the one that

will best fit your lifestyle and needs and go from there.

Of course if you have any particular questions about any of the 3

implants, we'll be more than happy to answer them.

Please feel free to contact me at any time.. either here on the

forum or by private email.

wishing you the very best.

Hugs,

Silly MI

I would but then,, what if you compare apple and orange? We can't. Yet,

both fruits are good tasting, same true with both brand, either brand, can't go

wrong. When you go to the CI center, they will show you the models and perhaps

flyers for you to take home.

All 3 makes in USA are equally good, just that it is done in different ways.

You might see one and say, YUCKY looking,, then you see another and say,

RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES!... the list go on.

Heck, I heard of person who finally picked what he got just for the key ring!

If your daughter is old enuough, let her in the selection process. The

selection of CI depends on two factors most of time, personal taste and

lifesytle.

Overall, the best person to ask, would be your CI team.

Hi I've recently made a HARD choice of which implant. We have chosen for our

3 yr old girl Cochlear (Esprit 3G) for these reasons:

1. its lighter than the Auria (BTE) which is very important for our girl who

won't be wearing the bwp

2. its compatible with an FM from phonak without additional wires (one is

more than enough for her

3. batteries last signifacntly longer (which is imporant when you're

travelling or taking care of siblings as well! -more cost efficient this way

too)

4. ive had more success with this co. in answering my qs and our ENT said

that she also feels this

4. our Surgeon said there is less drilling with this than Advanced Bionics

So although it seems like an easy decision right now and i seem very

confdiednt ..I wasn't and I was very confused. the one thing i didn't want

to compromise was my daughter's ability to percieve sound and i have learned

that children with either of them do well -and ther eis no significant

difference in performance. the fact that cochlear is an older co.

etc..didn't play a big role in our decision. but that helped as well.

hope this all helped (ive been reading up on CI for about a yr now, with

plans for our daughter's surgery in July at Boston Childrens-so i encourage

you to read read read, and stay objective. People with CI are very

compassionate about there choice and rightfully so. ALthough, if something

is said to you-get a reference and read up on it or ask a professional. this

is what i did, and this is what helped.

may God simplify your deicision

and about a pro for AB..the headpiece is smaller and cuter than

Cochlear..and the technology is also remarkable..but we still vote for

Cochlear.

Hi Lance,

I can't tell you about the differences but I can tell you about the

Nucleus. It has a self curling electrode array that is designed to get close to

the cochlea wall to maximize energy and hearing potential. It has three

different processing strategies that you can try, and each one has many programs

that can be created from it, so that you can find the best way to hear. Some

people stick with one strategy and others like to change depending on what they

are listening to. There are up to 22 electrodes that deliver sound to the

cochlea. There are many software additions to use and choose like

autosensitivity,

Whisper, ADRO, and the telecoil (my personal favorite!). There is a body

worn processor that can use either one or 2 rechargeable batteries so that you

probably will not ever have to think of changing a battery during the longest

day. There is a BTE that uses the same type of batteries that hearing aids use

so that you can find them anywhere. I get about three days from mine and my

insurance does reimburse for a partion of them as durable medical equipment.

Please email with any further questions and let me know if you would like

to read my journal that goes from surgery to the present.
