I am curious what some of you experienced CI users think about this.

I am amazed at how loud environmental sounds are and how much they

interfere with my ability to understand speech. Plain old traffic

noise is a loud hiss whenever I am outside in an urban/suburban

setting. The noise from mycar engine when I drive is very loud and

the air conditioner fan sounds like a jet taking off. No

exaggeration. I can hear very faint sounds like the hiss produced

when I rub my hand across my arm, but I can't understand very loud

voices on the radio. Fans and vents are really annoying. This is a

real problem at home. Three teenagers trying their level best to be

quiet still sound like a stampeding herd of angry gnu's.

So my question is, will this:

A. Eventually go away as my brain adapts to all this new sound so

that " background " noise is eventually in the background where it

belongs (in other words, be patient, Wayne); or

B. Is this something my audi can work on with remapping (in other

hi wayne

this is all very familiar... im in my 7th week of activation and still have same

experiences you are having although it does get better. i find i have to keep

my bte at a lower volume when kids at home cuz they are loud and then turn up

louder in quieter times. i have four kids who like to suddenly yelp, whistle

etc.

i too would like to know if this ever improves or " part of the package... "

isn't amazing just how noisy the world is??? but there is hope!! when

first turned on everything was wow!!! i was thrilled then came the

oh no!!! too much noise!!

this was when my brain began to understand the sounds and trying hard to

adjust

as time went on these sounds became part of the background your audie

can help a lot

by mappings and tweaking she can suppress background noise until you are

better adjusted

i can clearly remember the time when those food store plastic bag

sounds drove me crazy

i hate and dreaded the sound now it's just there not my favorite

sound but no longer annoying i had tons of sounds that were awful like

flushing the toilet i would flush and run i hated it so much as the

brain adjust and you have time to begin to understand sounds things get so

much better be patient and talk to your audie she can and will help if

you tell her

Wayne,

Yes its a noisy world we live in but to be reasurred you will learn to

ignore the unecessary noises like fan extractor, radiators, car noises etc.

Since

my switch on two months ago, I already learnt to ignore the unecessary

noises and its so nice to be able to listen to music while I m driving my car

now.

Its a miracle to any of us to hear al the sounds we never heard before and

it will get better all the time.

You are doing well and will continue to do so -

Take care,

Best wishes,

Minnie
