Guest guest
Great idea Joni (you can see I am behind with my emails). Problem with me I don't really know how to class myself. From what my parents told me, I didn't really start talking until I was 3 years old and it was a lot of garble. I do remember that I would say words as I thought they were and most of the time people would try to figure out what I was saying. So am I prelingual (hearing loss before speech) or postlingual (since I did have some hearing to be able to pick up some hearing without aids)? Guest guest
stargazzing susan the one thing all these idividuals have in common is that they are postlingual deaf... they had been born hearing and had hearing during the crucial language development years from age 0 to 5 years and then maybe had hearing a few more years or not. we have not seen any posts from a prelingual deafie that has " a miraculous " hook up. these folks have far more to overcome. but its sill just as miraculous lets applaud allthe hook ups miraculous or not. it does work! wehn hearing about antoher ci experience, you need to only compare to the other person ci experience ONLY IF they have a similar background to you as far as hearing history and how they used their aids and how they functioned with lipreading and speech. even then individaul responses are so different as we have seen several posts about how family memebers with ci react differently. i am having to remind several (discouraged) " newly ci prelinguals that these miraculous hookups are the extreme and mostly postlinguals. i have heard of some prelinguals (and even some postlingual) who feel discouraged when they hear others have " instantaneous hearing " and they dont want to work at the thier ci andymore and give up and take it off altogether. these folks dont realize it s people who are have had years of hearing who do the best on hook up day. i would like to sugest we add " prelingual " or " postlingual " under our names. it woudl give more hope to people and at the same time provide more realistic expecations for all the readers out there. thanks joni prelingual HU 4-
Guest guest
Joni, Well said!!! I couldnt agree more as i m prelingual too. We certainly need some encouragement to go all the way. My hearing therapist told me that I m doing well and to be realistic i know that i wont be able to have normal converstaion without lipreading. I only can hear few simple words without lipreading but its still a miracle to any of us. Do take care minnie,. 10/2/04 NC24C/3G Hook up on march 15th 2004 Now - Wonderful! Guest guest
Is your goal to be able to totally understand without lipreading? Even hearing people use lipreading very often without realizing it. Just curious. Minnie and Joni - I am very impressed with your progress that has happened very quickly. You should both be extremely proud of yourselves. Guest guest
Even after 2 years of CI, I still utilize my lipreading skills. I dont think Ill ever lose them since I have been lipreading since as an infant. They still come in handy especially in the nursing home. :-) Over this weekend, Ill tell you about my experiences of my reactivation of the new right CI. I am just wearing it right now and I am hearing the zillion clicking clicking of the keyboards. ( I am in a public library in NYC. It is coming back :-) -- Snoopy bilateral RI
Guest guest
Hello All: Just wanted to ring my chimes in here. My brother and I were born deaf since birth and have worn body aids and it will till after we had graduated from college before we were fitted with BTEs. We both are in our late 40's and received our CI last summer. We were excellent lipreaders and speaks very well. We both could not use the phone. We did some signing with using the oral and signing interpreter along with CART reporters. Last July when we both were hookup for the first time in our lives, I cannot fathom how much we were hearing so many new sounds we have never heard in our entire life before. We heard each other's voices for the first time and especially to our family and friends. We were able to repeated back in words and short sentences back to our respective audiologists without lipreading. We were hearing water running, door clicks, car signal, bird singing and footsteps from behind, etc. We both now talks to each other on the phone and can even talk to our family and friends and even some few strangers. I have to admit that having CI is 1000x better than HAs and there is no comparison at all. I encourage those prelinguals to research all three brands and go for CI. You have nothing to lose period. We are still in AWE how much we are hearing and it is a whole new world to us. I have to say it is a MIRACLE for both of us and thank each day for the wonderful gift of hearing to enable us to hear. Guest guest
Good question . I was just thinking of this today. My son was implanted at 32 months. He heard enough to have some word approximations and locate environmental sounds. He repeated whatever we tried to say to him but it basically came out " garble " too. He did generally get the syllables, tone of voice, vocal volume etc. I guess I would have to say he is MORE postlingual though, than he is prelingual as he really didn't have the " language " down prior to his CI. I don't know. We'll have to come up with a 50/50 term... Kim (Jaxon and Brixon's mom) Re: instant understanding on hook up day Great idea Joni (you can see I am behind with my emails).
