Am researching Lap-band procedures and spoke with Nina who invited me into this group. Not all that familiar with how groups work. My question though is what does the bottom of your signature mean where it reads 260/228/155? Thanks, Marilyn <marilynwi2000@...> wrote: Congradulations Dawnita, that is so exciting. Hi , I was banded on 10/5/2005. The numbers below represent my weight at surgery260, my current weight 228 and my goal weight 155. Sometimes you will see 4 numbers that represents the weight before a pre-op diet, pre-op, current and goal. This group will be great for answering any questions you may have. Good luck on your decision, for me its the best thing I have ever done for myself. Hi Keri, I'm still trying to decide too. I've definitely determined that I would prefer the lap band over the gastric bypass. But I'm just not sure about the cost of any type of surgery. It would involve selling my car and I'm not sure I'm willing to do that. We have two cars and I'm sure we could do with just one but I guess I'm spoiled. I would have to walk to the babysitters each day (but that would probably be good for me anyway). But I'm just not sure if I'm willing to pay $8,200 to lose weight. I found this website for Zetacap and am now wondering about that. Have you heard of that? Any thoughts? I guess I'm thinking if the purpose of the lap band is to close off part of my stomach so that I can't eat as much and that costs $8000 but there is a pill out there that pretty much has the same effect of feeling full and its cost is $67, that's a huge

difference. I'm almost leaning towards trying the pills for a little while and seeing what they do. I'm a little hesitant about the continuous fills involved in the lap band too. I dunno. Then I start to think I should just go join Weight Watchers and do this the sensible way as I probably haven't given that the effort that I should. But if it were that easy, then I would have already done it. My husband supports whatever I choose to do. He has a bunch of weight to lose too but he thinks he could do it the old fashion way - diet and exercise. I just don't have that gumption. I almost feel like it's better to be forced not to be able to eat rather than rely on will power. Not sure. Still thinking. What are your thoughts? keri uresti <keriuresti@...> wrote: how has your research being going? my husband and i have been thinking long and hard about this but he is still not to excited. please tell me your thoughts? Thanks for the info Marilyn. Are you happy with your decision to lap band? I'm wondering if you have any thoughts about the pill Zetacap? It pretty much does the same thing the lap band surgery would do - i.e. fill my stomach so that I don't eat as much. It's a lot less expensive. Just trying to look at all routes before determining to spend the ton of money required on the lap band. It would involve selling my car and I'm having a hard time thinking of that. Selfish, I guess? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Marilyn <marilynwi2000@...> wrote: Hi , I was banded on 10/5/2005. Hello ,

My name is Sonya, I don't post often but I thought maybe I could

help out a little. I have not yet had my procedure done, I am

scheduled, I have my tickets and I paid my deposit, so there is no

turning back now. I get banded on Feb 27th. I recognize a lot of

what you are saying, I have a very supportive fiancé, but everyone

else thinks I am crazy. First of all I don't really care what

everyone else thinks because I am comfortable with my decision. I

know this is the answer for me. I have tried many many other things

over the past ten years, but I have not exhausted every fad diet,

pill and self help group there is out there. I do feel however that

I have tried enough of them to know that they don't work for me. I

am also 27, I don't have any life threatening problems brought on by

my weight (yet), but my quality of life isn't what (in my opinion)

it should be for an otherwise healthy woman of 27. No offense to

anyone but I don't want to spend my life fat, I know that I am still

young and that is one of the reasons that I decided to go ahead. I

have a lot of life ahead and I want to enjoy it. I don't want to be

40, 50, or 60 years old with diabetes (sp?), high cholesterol (sp?)

and high blood pressure, 200lbs overweight and stuck in my house,

because I am too fat to walk around without excruciating pain,

wishing I had done this at 27. I know that if I don't do something

drastic that that is where I will be, that is how my whole family

is. I know that $8200 seems like a lot of money, but I know that my

life is worth more than that. As far as what other people say, I

just started telling everyone I was getting it done in San Diego,

because I got really tired, really fast of everyone else's opinions,

I also limited the number of people that I told at all, I figure

anyone who knows me knows I am always dieting, they will just think

I finally found one that worked. Anyways sorry for the rant, I have

a tendancy to do that, which is why I don't post often. What ever

you do, surgery or more pills, what really matters is that you are

comfortable with it and I wish you the best with whatever decision

you make.

Sonya

>

> Hi Liz. Thanks so much for your opinion. I take no offense to it

whatsoever. I do feel sort of like a fish floundering on this

subject. I was worried that I may offend some people by bringing up

a " miracle pill " but thought I would put it out there to see if

anyone had any thoughts on it. I'm not so sure that I think of it

as a miracle pill as I don't think there is such a pill out there.

I was mainly comparing the fact that the lap band's effect is

basically to lessen your stomach's capacity and therefore making it

hard to eat a large amount of food (I know it's a lot more than that

but for arguments sake) and yet the Zetacap states it does the same

thing. It fills up your stomach which lessens your stomach's

capacity for food as well. My concern for just myself at this time

is the cost primarily. I think I could come up with the funding for

the procedure by selling my car but then wonder if I'm ready to do

that. Then suddenly, I feel guilty considering such a surgery

> because I probably haven't tried the conventional way of losing

weight to the degree that I should. WLS should be a last resort

from what I've read and understand and I'm wondering if maybe I'm

not there yet. I really appreciate your advice on this as I really

am not sure what I should do. I worry about people's opinions of me

doing the surgery. I.e. is she crazy? Mexico? It's almost like

you have to convince people that it's safe. This group of people

understand because they've all been either through it or considering

it but to the outside world of friends and relatives, it sounds a

bit extreme. I am really glad my husband supports the idea. He is

the one that lives with me and sees the depression surrounding my

weight. He sees me when I've decided not to go somewhere because I

don't like what I have on or " I'm just so fat. " He sees a beautiful

vibrant woman and for that I love him so much. But I don't see

that. My other fear is that I go and do this surgery only to

> find out that I'm just a miserable person and that it had nothing

to do with my weight. I don't think that would be the case because

I look around at my life and I marvel at how blessed I am. We just

bought our first house in April. It's decorated to the degree that

I've always wanted - nothing extravagant but homey and cute. I have

two beautiful daughters who are 11 years old and 22 months old. I

have three cute kitties, a new puppy, 50 or so fish. My job is

wonderful. My marriage is wonderful. My relationship with the Lord

is wonderful. But yet I'm so unhappy with myself and the way I

look. I used to be cute. I really did. It's got to be the

weight. I feel like if I could just master this area of my life, I

would feel complete. Everything is so wonderful except for this

area.

>

> Woops, sorry about the diary entry there. In any case, yes, I'm

still researching it thoroughly. I so desperately want to have

that " after " picture that you often see on TV and that you see in

this forum. I just sometimes wonder if I'm meant for that kind of

happiness. Thanks again for your opinion and once again, I take no

offense to it whatsoever. I truly appreciate your honesty.

I haven't figured out if anybody told you what the numbers mean--they

are starting weight, current weight, goal weight. They show our

progress and I guess everybody is as pleased with their progress as I

am of mine. I think you are the same person who asked about other's

opinion of zeta-caps here's my thought--if ANY pill would work the

government would be touting its benefits, maybe even having it added

to cereals or to milk or something like ice-cream (OK enough playing

around but you get the idea). Surgery is not ever a decison to make

lightly and here is a bit of my path to my decision. I looked at the

cost and at my salary when I started the research and decided that

surely I could do the same thing for myself, on my own will-power and

spend the $8200 on a nice vacation and/or new clothes etc. Well of

course that did not work either (if I could do it on my own I would

have done it long long ago). I always did well when in a supervised

diet program with three visits a week, medical supervision and weekly

support-education groups. I also did well on Atkins several times.

But none of it ever lasted and the costs were in the thousands (never

added it up but I would guess over $300 a month for a total of

probably 3 years just for the three major efforts). I have to learn

to use my band as a tool with great potential. Yes I will need fills

but I think after two or maybe three they are needed less often (AM I

WRONG ON THAT ONE, FOLKS WITH EXPERIENCE?? I haven't had my first fill

yet I was banded 12/21/05. If the band is not for you, then it isn't

for you but there is no need to fear Mexico, or Dr. Aceves. Yes, you

can hear horror stories about Mexico BUT, my own father-in-law was

once so ill they put him in an oxygen tent in Overlook Hospital in

Summit, NJ (a real upscale place) but they forgot to turn on the

oxygen. Check into malpractice law suits and you will hear of horror

stories all over THIS country. I ENJOYED my stay in Mexico--the care

was excellent, the hospital was impeccably clean and the staff

attentive. $8200 is not pocket change but the cost of being miserable

in your own body and of all the impending medical problems that WILL

develop eventually need to be factored into your decision. Best

wishes for you as you research and reach decisions. I don't know

where you will get the money but I do know you are WORTH it--everybody

is!!

> I called today at a local place and got a quote of $16,900. I then

called a financing company and was approved for the amount. So now my

decision is do I spend double the amount and have a $325 monthly

payment? Or do I sell my car and pretty much pay for it all that way

and go to Mexico?

, if you qualified for $16000 for surgery, then you could

surely qualify for $8000 to buy another car using it as collateral.

SELL THE CAR YOU HAVE, use the money for the surgery, then get only

$8,000 financing for another car! YO CAN have it both ways!
