Guest guest
z... ALL the more reason to get up after surgery and start doing laps up and down the hallway. When I went back to Mexicali after surgery I saw the same thing I did during my surgery. People who sleep all the time seem to have more problems. The people that are up and walking laps up and down the hospital hallway are happier, able to be more active, and things are better all the way around. I was one of those people. Heck, I was climbing stairs (don't do that, it's a BAD BAD BAD idea) on day #2. I couldn't find the elevator to go see people that were upstairs and I didn't think it would be a big deal to take the stairs. THAT was pushing limits. But walking and walking and walking is not pushing limits. Be sure to take a robe so you don't feel weird doing hallway laps. Shave your legs well the morning of surgery because and Dr. Campos will each take a leg and wrap them in gauze. Take three sets of PJ's because if the incision drains it's a bit smelly and it will get on your clothes so an extra set of PJs is a must. Dark colors!! So drainage doesn't show up like a gross stain. My guess is that if you get up and walk every hour or so while awake you'll be fine. I work out of my home but I could have easily gone to work fairly pain free at day #4 outside of my home. It's more sore than anything at that point. If you sit perfectly still there is little to no discomfort. What hurts is getting in and out of a car, bed, standing up, bending over (which you aren't supposed to do and when you do it anyway you'll be reminded to bend at the knees). I think you'll be surprised at just how fast you recover. Trina and Gari had surgery the day before me and right after my surgery they were in my room taking the gauze off my legs hauling my butt out of bed. It actually feels kinda good to move around after surgery. For me I can honestly say I was easily 50% better, daily, than I was the previous day. Keep in mind, they send you home with Liquid (plain) Tylenol because that is all you need. I'm assuming you are getting banded vs. bypass? Because that is what I am referring to. > > I have read lots about the surgery on line and stuff- what can I > exspect my recovery and first 4 weeks to be like? Guest guest
Hi z – I had surgery on 9/22/06, and the 2nd week post op I drove from Palm Springs, CA to Phoenix, AZ on business (4 hour drive), and I stayed in a hotel for a couple days. I just brought my own water (lots of it), some cups, chicken bouillon cubes, and other food items I could eat, such as sugar free Jell-O (I made it before I left). I put the “cold stuff” in an ice chest for the drive, and made sure the hotel had at least a refrig and microwave in the room. I had no problems, either with eating or the long drive. I was up and about the first week, although I work at home so I didn’t have to go far or get all dressed up. I don’t think 6 days post op will be any problem for you going back to work. The hardest thing was staying on the post op diet, but keep busy and don’t think of the food you cannot eat. What helped me was every time I drove past a fast-food place, I would tell myself – I will never eat in that place again and I don’t care. And I really don’t care that I have not had a Mc’s hamburger since early September. Now I just make sure when I am driving for some time, I make sure I don’t get hungry before I am able to get home. I take water with me, and maybe some healthy snacks so I don’t get tempted to stop at a fast food place. I have saved so much money by not eating there, I can’t believe it. Let us know when you are having your surgery and keep us posted on your progress. Guest guest
z... The guaze is their version of TEDS. It is to prevent blood clots. It looks just as awful as TEDS! As soon as you get back to your room you'll be able to remove them, and you'll want to. ;o) It would appear that it really IS happening! I'm very happy for you. Before you know it the procedure will be done, you'll be healing, and losing weight. Time really goes by fast in the hospital. Just remember, walk! Each time you get up the first day walk just a little farther. I swear, it will pay off in the end. > > > > I have read lots about the surgery on line and stuff- what can I > > exspect my recovery and first 4 weeks to be like? Guest guest
I ordered the New Whey Liquid Protein – 25 g. of protein and about 100 calories. Its clear so you can drink that the first 2 weeks. I ordered it from Wholesale Supplement Store (wholesalesupplementstore.com), for about $25.00 for 12 servings. I now see they have 42g protein servings and more flavors. I haven’t tried those yet, but someone on this list mentioned them and said they were good. I like the “older” version of 25 g. In my 3rd week post op I started drinking the powdered protein mixes – mixed with water. I put ice in with the water, blended it to make it thicker, and I really like that. I like the chocolate flavor best – I’m a chocoholics. I have tried different brands of the powder, and they all taste the same to me. I put in some sweet & Low to sweeten it a bit, and then when fruits became “legal”, I put a banana in and blend that, which is really good. I have also put strawberries, blue berries, and just about any fruit I have. Good luck on your surgery – I know you will do fine – let us know how you are doing. Guest guest
Glad your husband is coming to, we will hook ours up so they can meet. Yep that is right your hubs better be saving his pennies for that new skinny wardrobe for you. I'm hoping I can just wear all those clothes in my closet I use to wear very comfortable 4 years ago. I was still a little chunky and I do hope I lose another 20 pounds from where I was, so it all reminds to be seen for me. Yes Iknow what you mean, it one way it seems like a dream, not real. I think it will be more real to us after the flight and when we are in the van going to Mexicalli. I just hope it does't get so real poor Dr A has to knock us out with some kind of drug to calm us down. LOL

LOL<< It is Dr. G, the anesthesiologist that gives those drugs a couple of hours before surgery. That would be 7.5mg Versed (last large tablet you will ever swallow whole again) and 50mg of Dramamine. Not that I speak from experience or anything! Heh... Guest guest
, Someone may have already answered your question but, just in case... Isopure has a clear liquid protein drink and I just noticed a new one today. It's put out by Special K and it's protein water. I don't know what it's like. It was at the regular grocery store next to atkin drinks & Ensure. Good luck on your Journey!! It will be a happy New Year for sure! Guest guest
Well if Dr A is listening or who ever gives the calm down drugs before they give you the nite nite drugs, listen up. I've got an OCD problem, LOL I have a heck of a " jones " for talking, can talk not stop 24/7 that is on any normal day. now get me nervous and it gets worse. So I say do yourself a favor calm me down quickly so I won't get the chatter box going and knock me out quickly.
Guest guest
Hi , I went back to work about 9 days after surgery. I probably could have gone back b/4 then. If I would have had to go back in 2 days, I could have but would have just been very tired. Even though I didn't go back to work right away, I have 2 kiddos - a teenager and a 5 year old that keeps me hopping. I really had basically no pain other than the standard gas issues. I walked and walked and walked some more and that really is all I needed to do. While I was off work, it was very easy for me to stick to the post op diet. When I went back to work, it was much harder. I have a high stress job and used food as my comfort. That has been the hardest habit to break. The main thing that helped me was some advice to take the liquid Tylenol even you aren't hurting the 1st few days. They explained it is easier to manage the pain if you stay ahead of it. The most amazing part is how different we all react to this surgery so you'll hear from others with a totally different experience. I've had a few surgeries b/4 this and by far this was the easiest of all from which to recover. Good luck with your surgery -- you will do great! Guest guest
Alli Thanks for the response- I have heard that the walking thing is the answer- I am in a position that I will be able to sit and walk when I want to- I have time to rest during certain breaks and I honestly am not quit at scared now that I have heard from some of you guys. The eating thing has been confusing to be honest. So people say they eat junk and it is okay others say you can’t have one bit. Others talk about “slimming” which I still don’t understand- does this happen even when you don’t eat- I speak to large groups of people for a living – is this something that could happen out of no where and in the middle of a speech. HOLY COW? I am a bit nervous about the idea that your not filled when you leave and therefore you can eat a large amount once you heal- or I have heard that some never need a fill. I was told you can’t feel the device and then people mention – you will know you need a fill depending on how tight or loose it feels? Any ideas on all this- I absolutely love reading all the email- I have learned a ton- and don’t think any of this is discouraging because it isn’t- I am just curious about it all. Guest guest
Hi -- The eating thing has been confusing to be honest. So people say they eat junk and it is okay others say you can’t have one bit. [Ally's comments:] Everyone is different. I have not found one thing I can not eat. Others can barely keep liquids down. I guess it is all in how your body heals. Others talk about “slimming” which I still don’t understand- does this happen even when you don’t eat- I speak to large groups of people for a living – is this something that could happen out of no where and in the middle of a speech. HOLY COW? [Ally's comments:] From what I've read from others, sliming is when you don't chew your food well enough and it gets stuck in your band opening. Your body starts producing saliva like stuff to hopefully help it pass the opening. Usually it comes back up rather than going down. Of course, if you haven't eaten, this won't happen. Although, now that I think about it, some have said they have slimed on water. Go figure, I have no idea on that! I am a bit nervous about the idea that your not filled when you leave and therefore you can eat a large amount once you heal- or I have heard that some never need a fill. [Ally's comments:] I know, the 1st week or so I was still very swollen and so the liquids were just fine. I felt full after drinking the broth or eating the jello. When the swelling went down, the appetite went up exponentially. I had my surgery on the 12/9. Unfortunately during the holidays, I totally cheated and ate stuff not on the post op diet plan. Even more unfortunate, I have found my band is very care free and really doesn't dislike anything I've ate or drank!!! Ugh! A lot of people no can eat bread, pizza, pasta - all the really bad stuff - which is really a blessing in disguise. I was told you can’t feel the device and then people mention – you will know you need a fill depending on how tight or loose it feels? When people refer to being tight or loose, they are meaning how easy/hard it is to eat and drink. I can't feel my band but feel no restriction at all so my band is "loose". Others can eat 1/4 cup of food so their band is "tight" Any ideas on all this- I absolutely love reading all the email- I have learned a ton- and don’t think any of this is discouraging because it isn’t- I am just curious about it all. [Ally's comments:] Ditto Have a safe and happy new year!!! [Dr-Aceves-bandster s] I just got the news- I am scheduled Jan 11th- Now I am scared! Guest guest
z, I did the same thing with my husband one day in Sears...We were walking and I was pointing out small size clothes saying "Just think, I'll be buying out of this section of the store before I know it" and now I am...I still find myself going to the heavy section and when I pick up something I like it's to big...then I remind myself that I'm now wearing a size large shirt and 14 in pants, no longer am I buying a size 18 shirt and 18 in pants...It sure feels great...I can't wait to buy a medium shirt and a size 12 in pants... Get ready to have a blast shopping...Even though I'm not at goal yet, I love buying clothes that I know I will have to give away soon...
