The herb thyme is something else we never have enough of.... We all think of thyme as a culinary herb; you are about to find out that thyme has more uses than you ever thought possible. The word thyme means fumigator. Not exactly what we think of when we add thyme to our favorite dishes. In ancient and medieval times the plant was thought to inspire courage. In the middle ages sleeping on a pillow stuffed with thyme was recommended for people afflicted with melancholy. Thyme has a strong spicy taste and odor. Thyme's healing powers stretch from helping sore throats, to coughs, bronchitis, laryngitis and whooping cough. It is also known to help diarrhea, chronic gastritis, lack of appetite, child bedwetting problems and adults with unwanted nightmares. Thyme is one of the best antiseptic herbs. Thyme's powers are endless. Thyme is found as one of the ingredients in products you probably have in your medicine cabinet. Vicks Vapor Rub and Listerine both have thyme in them. Here are some tips and recipes to help you with some of your common aliments and everyday problems.Store your potatoes with thyme. They will last longer. Thyme has proven to slow fungal growth in vegetables. Sinus problems? Thyme can clear your head and your sinuses. Pour boiling water over thyme and inhale the steam. Essential oil of thyme can also be used. Place 2 -3 drops of the oil in boiling water and inhale the steam. Athlete's Foot Talcum Powder Mix 2 teaspoons thyme essential oil in 1 1/2 cup of arrowroot or cornstarch. Apply to affected area. Chest Rub 2 teaspoons, almond oil or petroleum jelly3 drops peppermint essential oil5 drops eucalyptus essential oil5 drops basil essential oil5 drops thyme essential oilCombine and mix ingredients. Rub into chest. The oil evaporates and keeps airways clear. Cough Syrup 3 teaspoons chamomile flowers4 teaspoons dried thyme or 8 sprigs of fresh thyme 4 teaspoons dried thyme or 8 sprigs of fresh thyme2 teaspoons sage or 8 sage leafs2 teaspoons marigold flowers1 clove garlic2 pints of water1 1/4 cup honey. Add the herbs to the water and simmer in a covered pan for 15 minutes. Strain. Return the mixture to the heat and simmer. Reduce the mixture down to 3/4 cup. Add honey. Mix well. Dosage: Adults 2 teaspoons 4 - 6 times day. Children, 1 teaspoon 4 - 6 times daily. Thyme Vinegar Soothes sore throats, gum disease, coughs and athlete's foot. Fill a 16 oz glass jar with fresh thyme or 1/3 cup of dry thyme. Cover with cider vinegar, place lid on mixture and let sit for 2 weeks. Strain. Dosage: For Cough use 1 - 2 teaspoons in water to taste. You may add honey. For Athlete's Foot Soother - Mix 1/2 cup of the vinegar mixture with 1/2 cups water. Apply to affected area.
