Guest guest
Herbal CompanionsBy Michele Slabbert The only difference between plants and ourselves is that we have feet. Just as we need nourishment through food, exercise and good companionship, so do plants. Healthy soil --- Healthy Plants --- Healthy People There are various ways to plant, some work for us and some work for others. Planting by the moon is an old method, which I am happy to say, is regaining popularity. The first quarter Moon is the time to plant crops that appear above ground. It is also the time to begin new projects. This is the increasing moon. The second quarter Moon is also for above ground crops and the time to nurture and tend all new growth. This is the increasing moon. The third quarter moon is the time for root crops, the finishing of outstanding projects and the time to harvest. This is the decreasing moon. The fourth quarter is the time to begin compost heaps, remove weeds and pests. Harvest. This is the decreasing moon. The movement of the moon has a connection with the rising and falling of the tides. The movement of the moon affects all water, including the water within us. Not only does the moon control the large and small bodies of water, she also affects the water within it. When water is rising during the increasing moon, seeds, crops etc. find it easier to draw water from the soil. Water flows to the root system as the full moon draws to a close. In the 1st and 2nd quarters we plant leafy crops with a shallow root system. In the 3rd and 4th quarters we prepare beds and soil, weed, manage pest control and start composting. Certain herbs collected on full moon show a higher potency especially when dripping of morning dew. My special time is early in the morning on full moon collecting herbs and flowers for tinctures and flower essences. Suzi What is a weed?
